Neuroimaging techniques have been useful tools for accurate investigation of brain structure and function in eating disorders. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, single photon emission computed tomography, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and voxel-based morphometry have been the most relevant technologies in this regard. The purpose of this review is to update the existing data on neuroimaging in eating disorders. The main brain changes seem to be reversible to some extent after adequate weight restoration. Brain changes in bulimia nervosa seem to b

The modern imaging era has introduced a variety of techniques that aid in the evaluation of complex neurologic problems. To optimize the yield of neuroimaging the clinician must, first and foremost, determine the nature of the neuro-ophthalmic disorder; and then localize the lesion. Once the localization of the neuro-ophthalmic problem is understood, the optimal imaging modality can be directed toward the anatomic region of interest. In this article the approach to neuroimaging is discussed, with emphasis on the anatomic localization of lesions affecting afferent and efferent visual function.

CS is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder, which is mainly characterized by neurologic and sensory impairment, cachectic dwarfism, and photosensitivity. We describe the neuroimaging features (MR imaging, ¹H-MR spectroscopy, and CT) in the various clinical subtypes of CS from a cohort of genetically and biochemically proved cases. Hypomyelination, calcifications, and brain atrophy were the main imaging features. Calcifications were typically found in the putamen and less often in the cortex and dentate nuclei. Severe progressive atrophy was seen in the supratentorial white matter, the c

In chronic migraine, many neuroimaging studies with advanced techniques showed abnormalities in several brain areas involved in pain processing. The structural and functional dysfunctions are reported in cerebral areas localized in the brainstem and in the lateral and medial pain pathways. Using the advanced technique of volumetric MRI (voxel-based morphometry), reduction in the grey and white matter in brain areas of the pain network and increased density of the structures of the brainstem were observed in patients with episodic or chronic migraine. Most of the studies of functional anatomy i

Mitochondrial disease represents a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders that require a variety of diagnostic tests for proper determination. Neuroimaging may play a significant role in diagnosis. The various modalities of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allow for multiple independent detection procedures that can give important anatomical and metabolic clues for diagnosis. The non-invasive nature of neuroimaging also allows for longitudinal studies. To date, no pathonmonic correlation between specific genetic defect and neuroimaging findings have been described. However, certain n

Traditional neuropathologic methods have provided only limited insight into the central nervous system abnormalities underlying Tourette syndrome. In the past 20 years, investigators have turned increasingly to in vivo neuroimaging approaches to localize, quantify, and characterize neuroanatomic, functional, and neurochemical distinctions in living subjects with Tourette syndrome. Research methods have included aggregate measures of cerebral energy metabolism, assessments of cerebral structure and size, and highly specific assessments of neurochemical markers of select neurons and synapses. We report two cases of neurosyphilis with atypical clinical presentations that were compounded by atypical neuroimaging findings. In the first case, MRI brain scan findings were felt to be compatible with mesial temporal sclerosis or herpes simplex encephalitis. The second patient presented with a clinical picture compatible with normal pressure hydrocephalus as well as some degree of ventricular enlargement and prominent periventricular white matter changes by MRI brain scan. He actually underwent ventriculo-peritoneal shunting prior to determination that he had active syphilitic involvement

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that deficiencies in trace elements, particularly molybdenum, may contribute to Esophageal Cancer (EC) pathogenesis. Molybdenum is an essential micronutrient that plays a key role in detoxifying carcinogenic compounds through its involvement in enzymatic pathways, including xanthine oxidase activity. This study aims to evaluate serum molybdenum levels in patients with histologically confirmed EC and compare them to healthy controls to assess the association between molybdenum deficiency and EC incidence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, single-ce

Mitochondrial disease is frequently a multisystem disorder which often involves the central nervous system. Imaging finding although diverse are characterized by focal lesions with T2 hyperintensity, which may be most evident on FLAIR imaging and often progress to atrophy. Deep brain structures including brainstem and basal ganglia structures are particularly vulnerable though white matter and cortex may also be involved. In this paper we describe in detail the imaging features of the spectrum of mitochondrial diseases and suggest a scoring technique for recording severity and extent of brain

Parents and clinicians concerned about high-risk infants and children with motor delay or cerebral palsy seek information on cause, treatment, prognosis, and recurrence risk. Used in combination with history and examination, neuroimaging studies can improve diagnosis and management. In premature infants, cranial ultrasound is a reliable, noninvasive diagnostic modality. Nuclear magnetic resonance techniques including magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion weighted imaging can be used effectively in neonatal encephalopathies. In children with motor delay and cerebral palsy syndromes including

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review considers the role of neuroimaging in developmental disorders by highlighting recent studies in two distinct, but overlapping, developmental disorders: autism and fragile X syndrome.
RECENT FINDINGS: After a decade of conflicting results in neuroimaging studies of autism, recent studies have provided some convergent data. One well-replicated finding is that autistic subjects have larger brains. Further, this enlargement, present as early as 3 years of age, appears to represent accelerated growth in infancy and may be followed by slowed growth in late childhood.

A critical review about different neuroimaging techniques and its contribution to the field of cerebrovascular diseases is presented. The advances of neuroradiology have revolutionized stroke diagnosis. The inminence use of specific treatment for acute brain ischemia (neuroprotective and thrombolytic drugs) make neurologists become familiar with several imaging techniques that will also change stroke management. Nowadays, computed tomography is the mostly available technique for spanish neurologists in the acute phase, because of that, a suitable knowledge of early CT signs of acute infarction

High-field MRI has given us a great impact in the clinical diagnosis of various motor disturbances, because the structural abnormalities of the pyramidal tract, basal ganglia and cerebellum are easily observed with this technique. In case of lower motor neuron disease without clinical upper motor neuron sign, proton density-weighted image of the internal capsule and cerebral peduncle is useful for detecting the latent pyramidal tract degeneration. Differential diagnosis of parkinsonism is one of the most successful examples of the clinical use of high-field MRI. Postero-lateral putaminal T2-hy

This article reviews the neuroradiologic manifestations of acute nonpenetrating head injury. The pathophysiology of the various types of neurotrauma is correlated with the imaging features. Computed tomography (CT) remains the initial imaging modality of choice, allowing rapid diagnosis of the majority of injuries. Magnetic resonance imaging is useful in the subacute and chronic stages (particularly in a patient whose initial CT scan is unremarkable) to assess brainstem and white matter shearing injuries.

Modern neuroimaging techniques have added to the understanding of brain edema and its earlier diagnosis. It is now possible to quickly know whether a lesion is focal with associated pressure effects or whether the symptoms are due to a diffuse process whose treatment may be different. The various herniation syndromes can be appreciated on the CT without risk to the patient. The neuropathologic proof of earlier pathophysiologic theories of three types of edema (vasogenic, cytotoxic, and interstitial) caused by various diseases need no longer wait for the autopsy specimen; it is strongly suggest

Addiction is a chronically relapsing disease characterized by drug intoxication, craving, bingeing, and withdrawal with loss of control. An expanding body of literature has suggested that non-substance addictions, such as internet addiction and pathological gambling, exhibit shared clinical, phenomenological, and biological features with substance-based addictions. With the development of imaging technology in the past three decades, neuroimaging studies have yielded critical insights into the neurobiological implications of substance and non-substance addictions, revealing neurochemical and f
