Neurologic manifestations of giant cell arteritis.

Neurological manifestations are common in giant cell arteritis. Both the central and peripheral nervous system can be involved. The most dreaded manifestations are visual loss and stroke. Both frequently have premonitory symptoms, such as amaurosis fugax, blurry vision, diplopia, transient ischemic attacks, and jaw claudication. Although most of these manifestations occur prior to steroid therapy, they may also develop during the early phase of therapy, or during tapering of the dose of steroids. Earlier diagnosis, close monitoring and improving the treatment protocols may prevent mortality an

[Neurologic manifestations of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections].

BACKGROUND: Some neurological manifestations associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection have been reported, such as meningoencephalitis, cerebellitis, aseptic meningitis, polyradiculopathy, transverse myelitis, cranial nerve palsies and myositis. CASE REPORT: Case 1. A 10 year-old boy had an acute pneumonia that was subsequently proven to be due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. This infection was resistant to macrolid administration for 1 week requiring the administration of vibramycin instead. At that time, the patient developed an aseptic meningitis syndrome and a severe cerebelliti

Neurologic manifestations of progressive systemic sclerosis.

Neurologic involvement in progressive systemic sclerosis is considered uncommon. We retrospectively examined the prevalence and nature of neurologic complications in 50 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis. In 20 (40%), neurologic abnormalities were detected, with a total of 28 neurologic manifestations. All levels of the central and peripheral nervous system were affected: muscle (22%), peripheral nerve (18%), spinal cord (8%), and brain (6%). Of note were the presence of myelopathy in four patients and inclusion-body myositis in two. In 10 patients (20%), no definable cause of the ne…

Chronic neurologic manifestations of Lyme disease.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Lyme disease, caused by the tick-borne spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, is associated with a wide variety of neurologic manifestations. To define further the chronic neurologic abnormalities of Lyme disease, we studied 27 patients (age range, 25 to 72 years) with previous signs of Lyme disease, current evidence of immunity to B. burgdorferi, and chronic neurologic symptoms with no other identifiable cause. Eight of the patients had been followed prospectively for 8 to 12 years after the onset of infection. RESULTS: Of the 27 patients, 24 (89 percent) had a mild encepha…

[Neurologic manifestations of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome].

Neurologic manifestations were examined in 25 patients with the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Injuries to vessels of the brain and spine, arteriovenous malformation, muscular and vertebrogenic lesions, headaches, and vegetative disorders were diagnosed. The clinical and laboratory data are provided whatever the presence or lack of neurologic symptomatology. The problem of the pathogenesis and treatment of neurologic manifestations associated with the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are discussed.

Paraneoplastic neurologic manifestations of neuroendocrine tumors.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a heterogeneous group of tumors arising from the transformation of neuroendocrine cells in several organ … iologically active ("functioning") substances, which can determine humoral (endocrine) effects with neurologic manifestations. Paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes (PNS) are immunologically mediated and frequently detected in small cell lung cancer but rarely seen in other forms of NEN. PNS and Merkel cell carcinoma is increasingly reported, especially with Lambert Eaton my …

Neurologic manifestations of major electrolyte abnormalities.

The brain operates in an extraordinarily intricate environment which demands precise regulation of electrolytes. Tight control over their concentrations and gradients across cellular compartments is essential and when these relationships are disturbed neurologic manifestations may develop. Perturbations of sodium are the electrolyte disturbances that most often lead to neurologic manifestations. Alterations in extracellular fluid sodium concentrations produce water shifts that lead to brain swelling or shrinkage. If marked or rapid they can result in profound changes in brain function which ar…

Neurologic manifestations of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic, relapsing and remitting inflammatory conditions affecting the digestive system, comprising two main distinctive diseases, ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Besides the classic gastrointestinal manifestations, a variable number of IBD patients present with extraintestinal manifestations, including central and peripheral nervous system involvement. Peripheral neuropathy is one of the most common complications. An inflammatory myopathy has also been found. Cranial neuropathies include the Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, optic neuritis,

Neurologic manifestations of diphtheria and pertussis.

Historically, diphtheria was a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the prevaccine era. However, in recent times there has been a resurgence of diphtheria, especially in the newly independent states of the former USSR. Diphtheritic polyneuropathy can be a serious complication in patients who have a severe infection. In patients with pertussis, seizures and encephalopathy can occur as a complication of asphyxia. Vaccination against diphtheria and pertussis in children and booster vaccination in adults is recommended. DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccination has been shown to increa

Neurologic manifestations of pediatric chikungunya infection.

Chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne arbovirus, was responsible for a massive epidemic in La Réunion Island during 2005 to 2006. The disease is usually benign, but neurologic involvement, with sometimes fatal outcome, has been described. We report a retrospective hospital-based pediatric series of 30 children (23 boys and 7 girls) who presented neurologic manifestations of chikungunya such as encephalitis (n = 12), febrile seizures (n = 10), meningeal syndrome (n = 4), and acute encephalopathy (n = 4). Cerebrospinal fluid biological and cytological analyses (n = 23) were unremarkable except for…
