Factors Influencing Functional Recovery in People After Chronic Critical Illness During Early Neurological Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Advances in intensive care have increased survival after critical illness, often accompanied by prolonged mechanical ventilation and the development of chronic critical illness (CCI) with persistent physical impairments. Physiotherapy in early rehabilitation is central to restoring function, though recovery is influenced by various (pre-)clinical factors. This study provides a systematic description of physiotherapy during early rehabilitation and explores how (pre-)clinical factors affect functional outcomes. METHODS: This secondary analysis of the prospective cohort study CINAMO

Weaning in early neurological-neurosurgical rehabilitation in Germany - results from a nationwide online survey.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, approximately 1,100 beds are allocated to early neurological-neurosurgical rehabilitation (ENNR) for patients with severe neurological illness requiring weaning from mechanical ventilation. Specialized ENNR institutions play a major role in maintaining ICU capacity in acute care hospitals and in reducing the number of patients dependent on home intensive care. However, nationwide structural data on ENNR weaning centers-together with detailed patient characteristics-remain unavailable. This lack of information poses significant challenges for healthcare planning, resourc

Immersive VR for upper-extremity rehabilitation in patients with neurological disorders: a scoping review.

BackgroundNeurological disorders, such as stroke and chronic pain syndromes, profoundly impact independence and quality of life, especially when affecting upper extremity (UE) function. While conventional physical therapy has shown effectiveness in providing some neural recovery in affected individuals, there remains a need for improved interventions. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising technology-based approach for neurorehabilitation to make the patient's experience more enjoyable. Among VR-based rehabilitation paradigms, those based on fully immersive systems with headsets have

Changes in Epidemiological Trends and Rehabilitation Usage in Neurological Diseases in Korea: Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by typical motor symptoms such as resting tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity, as well as non-motor manifestations, including psychiatric symptoms, autonomic dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. These symptoms induce a marked impact on functional independence in daily activities and quality of life in PD patients. Recent guidelines recommend adequate rehabilitation education and treatment from the early stages of PD, and rehabilitation has become part of standard care for PD. In Korea, the number of patients with PD has mo

It Is Time for a Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation Approach: A Scoping Review on Stomatognathic Diseases in Neurological Disorders.

Patients affected by neurological disorders can develop stomatognathic diseases (SD) related to decreased bite force and quality of mastication, bruxism, severe clicking and other temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which deeply affect patients' swallowing, masticatory and phonation functions and, therefore, their quality of life. The diagnosis is commonly based on medical history and physical examination, paying attention to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) range of movements, jaw sounds and mandibular lateral deviation. Diagnostic tools such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imag

The Impact of Robotic Rehabilitation on the Motor System in Neurological Diseases. A Multimodal Neurophysiological Approach.

Motor disability is a key feature of many neurological diseases, influencing the social roles of affected patients and their ability to perform daily life activities. Current rehabilitation capacities are overwhelmed by the age-related increase of motor dysfunctions seen, for example, in stroke, extrapyramidal or neuromuscular diseases. As the patient to rehabilitation personnel ration increases, robotic solutions might establish the possibility to rapidly satisfy the increasing demand for rehabilitation. This paper presents an inaugural exploratory study which investigates the interchangeabil

Brain-computer interface technology as a tool to augment plasticity and outcomes for neurological rehabilitation.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are a rehabilitation tool for tetraplegic patients that aim to improve quality of life by augmenting communication, control of the environment, and self-care. The neurobiology of both rehabilitation and BCI control depends upon learning to modify the efficacy of spared neural ensembles that represent movement, sensation and cognition through progressive practice with feedback and reward. To serve patients, BCI systems must become safe, reliable, cosmetically acceptable, quickly mastered with minimal ongoing technical support, and highly accurate even in the fac
