Why bodies? Twelve reasons for including bodily expressions in affective neuroscience.

Why bodies? It is rather puzzling that given the massive interest in affective neuroscience in the last decade, it still seems to make sense to raise the question 'Why bodies' and to try to provide an answer to it, as is the goal of this article. There are now hundreds of articles on human emotion perception ranging from behavioural studies to brain imaging experiments. These experimental studies complement decades of reports on affective disorders in neurological patients and clinical studies of psychiatric populations. The most cursory glance at the literature on emotion in humans, now refer

Blood pressure control before and after spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage: a stroke service audit and strategies for improvement.

In a retrospective audit of 89 adults with spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) at a tertiary neuroscience centre, fewer than 60% met the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) blood pressure (BP) target in the year before their haemorrhage, despite most carrying a known diagnosis of hypertension. Blood pressure control and antihypertensive prescribing improved after ICH, yet most survivors remained above the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) secondary-prevention target, and the first documented community BP check occurred a median of 62 days after discharge. These fi

Intraventricular hemorrhage and long-term outcome in the premature infant.

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a common, serious problem among premature infants. With advances in neonatal care, improved survival rates of small premature infants and improved diagnostic capabilities, IVH is seen with increased frequency in the high-risk nursery. Studies indicate 15-20% of premature infants (birth weight less than 1,500 gms), have been noted to have IVH Many of these neonates survive beyond infancy and may subsequently be seen in pediatric neurosurgery and neurology clinics with long-term problems such as hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and seizures.

Nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a review of clinical course and outcome in two hemorrhage patterns.

Patients who experience a nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage differ from patients who suffer an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in initial presentation (including neurological examination and computed tomography [CT] scans), clinical course, and outcome. A perimesencephalic distribution of nonaneurysmal subarachnoid blood on CT imaging has been described as a distinct clinical entity with a benign course and an excellent prognosis; research suggests that the majority of these patients have excellent outcomes. In most cases, these patients return to their previous level of functioning. Su

Nonketotic Hyperglycemia-related Seizures of Left Parieto-occipital Origin: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Nonketotic hyperglycemia-related seizures are not uncommonly encountered in clinical practice. Their presentation varies, and they may cause serious consequences if they remain unnoticed. CASE: We report a case of nonketotic hyperglycemia-related seizures of unique left parieto-occipital origin and semiology, presenting as focal aware (simple partial) and impaired awareness (complex partial) seizures, including contralateral limb convulsion and apraxialike behavior. DISCUSSION: Nonketotic hyperglycemia-related seizures can present with a relatively unique semiology. Careful edu

Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension: An Underrecognized Complication of Parkinson Disease.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) is a common source of disability but is an often untreated nonmotor symptom of Parkinson disease. The key manifestations of nOH include lightheadedness, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue when standing and engaging in activities in the upright position and result in falls, impaired activities of living, decreased quality of life, and short-term cognitive impairment. Early diagnosis and treatment of nOH are necessary to mitigate its adverse effects and reduce nOH-related symptom burden. CASE STUDY: The management of nOH is illustrated through

Guillain-Barré syndrome--a patient guide and nursing resource.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an illness characterized by acute neuromuscular paralysis. A review of the history, course of the disease, current treatments, and nursing interventions, as well as excerpts from a patient teaching guide developed by the author for patients with GBS is included in this paper. The objectives are to present information about GBS, first at a level of understanding appropriate for patients and their families, and then to provide a more indepth discussion for health care providers. Despite the potential severity of GBS, the expected outcomes are encouraging. GBS aff

Carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very common peripheral neuropathy; however, its symptoms are such that they are often overlooked by patients or misdiagnosed by their primary care physicians or nurse practitioners, leading to progression of the condition so severe that sometimes even surgical options will be of little benefit. This article reviews current literature on carpal tunnel syndrome and its signs and symptoms, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, and treatment options.

Professional traumatic grief in neurosurgery: domains, red flags, and first-line support for trainees and surgeons, informed by a nursing framework.

OBJECTIVE: Complications and deaths are unavoidable in neurosurgery, and although their emotional impact on surgeons and trainees is increasingly recognized, distress, burnout, and silent attrition remain substantial. In parallel, fields such as nursing and psychology have developed rich frameworks for understanding and supporting professional grief, suggesting opportunities for collaboration. Herein, the authors aimed to 1) use a nursing-derived professional traumatic grief (PTG) framework to describe how this construct might manifest in neurosurgeons and neurosurgical trainees after major ad

Undernutrition in Acquired Brain Injury Rehabilitation: A Retrospective GLIM Exploration.

BACKGROUND: Neuroscience nurses play a pivotal role in identifying nutritional risk factors, monitoring patients, and initiating interventions to optimize recovery outcomes. Patients with moderate to severe acquired brain injury (ABI) are at risk of undernutrition during subacute rehabilitation, yet prevalence is rarely described using recent diagnostic criteria. This study aimed to explore the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria in routinely collected clinical data and to describe undernutrition in patients with ABI at admission and discharge from in-hospital rehabili

What to do about flat heads: preventing and treating positional occipital flattening.

Across Canada there has been an increasing incidence of positional occipital flattening. This increase appears to be related to the recent change in infant sleep position to supine. In this paper, two patterns of positional occipital flattening, positional plagiocephaly and positional brachycephaly, are outlined. While there is no evidence of long-term developmental or neurological problems that result from positional occipital flattening, the infant's appearance can be distressing to parents who will then seek treatment. Prevention of positional occipital flattening requires a community appro

Psychosocial Support Needs and Preferences Among Family Caregivers of ICU Patients with Severe Acute Brain Injury: A Qualitative Thematic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers of patients with severe acute brain injury (SABI) are at risk for clinically significant chronic emotional distress, including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. Existing psychosocial interventions for caregivers of intensive care unit (ICU) patients are not tailored to the unique needs of caregivers of patients with SABI, do not demonstrate long-term efficacy, and may increase caregiver burden. In this study, we explored the needs and preferences for psychosocial services among SABI caregivers to inform the development and adaptation of interventions

Quantifying nursing care in barbiturate-induced coma with the therapeutic intervention scoring system.

The use of pentobarbital-induced coma to manage intractable increased intracranial pressure remains a viable option in the acutely brain-injured patient. In a retrospective review of 15 patients with a variety of neurological injuries at our institution, it was found that aggressive management of respiratory, hemodynamic, metabolic and neurological status was required with the use of pentobarbital coma. A scoring system to determine the amount of interventions and nursing care required was used in the review. The Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System (TISS) demonstrated that with the acuity

Pharmacogenomics of Cytochrome P450 of Nimodipine Metabolism After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a type of stroke that is life threatening with high rates of mortality, and many survivors are left with permanent neurologic deficits. Nimodipine is the treatment of choice for aSAH with the goal of reduction of delayed cerebral ischemia. It is the only evidence-based medication that has been shown to have improved outcomes for delayed cerebral ischemia; therefore, it is important for neuroscience nurses to be knowledgeable of the pharmacology and pharmacogenomics properties of this medication, including cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzym

Endoscopic strip craniectomy: a minimally invasive treatment for early correction of craniosynostosis.

Traditionally, surgical correction of craniosynostosis involves calvarial remodeling, large blood losses necessitating transfusions, hospital stays of several days, and less-than-satisfactory results. In this study, outcomes from a minimally invasive technique called endoscopic strip craniectomy, along with a postoperative molding helmet, to correct craniosynostosis in young infants were evaluated. The endoscopic strip craniectomy was performed on 185 patients with clinical signs of craniosynostosis, with the following distribution: 107 sagittal, 42 coronal, 37 metopic, and 7 lambdoid, for a t
