Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare angiomatosis characterized by distinctive cutaneous and gastrointestinal venous malformations that result in gastrointestinal haemorrhage and iron-deficiency anaemia secondary to the bleeding episodes. We hope to emphasize the possibility of recurrent melaena in BRBNS and heighten physicians' awareness about the disease to contribute to its early detection.

We describe a case of the blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome, an uncommon systemic disorder characterized by multiple bluish haemangiomas of the skin and gastrointestinal tract. The syndrome is commonly associated with iron deficiency anaemia due to gastrointestinal bleeding. We studied six cases of heavily pigmented melanocytic lesions with features of blue nevi within the dermis, but with an additional junctional dendritic component. A 79-year-old man with fatigue and melena was diagnosed with severe iron-deficiency anemia. Capsule endoscopy revealed submucosal vascular lesions in the jejunum and active bleeding in the ileum, consistent with Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome (BRBNS). Exploratory laparoscopy led to the resection of a 120 cm intestinal segment, confirming the diagnosis. Figures show the resected section and vascular anomalies.

Blue nevi are melanocytic tumors originating in the cutaneous dermis. Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) involves cutaneous vascular malformation characterized by multiple venous malformations. This commonly affects the skin and gastrointestinal tract. Blue nevi are uncommon, asymptomatic lesions of the uterine cervix. These lesions are not often detected clinically or on colposcopy. Careful histopathological examination is required. The nevus cells are said to originate from the immature melanoblasts of the neural crest. These lesions need to be differentiated from malignant melanoma and melanosis of the cervix. We present here a case report of incidentally detected cervical blue nevus in a 52 year old lady.

The atypical cellular blue nevus is an extremely rare nevomelanocytic lesion which lacks precise histologic characterization in the current literature. Given the potential for significant architectural and cytologic overlap with melanoma, further study, including molecular analysis, is needed. PURPOSE: To identify ophthalmologic manifestations of the blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome, a rare cutaneovisceral hemangiomatosis.
METHODS: The authors report two patients with a diagnosis of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome with orbital hemangiomas.
RESULTS: In one patient, the orbital lesion presented with signs and symptoms similar to an orbital varix and in the other with lid ecchymosis from an eyelid lesion.

A 69-year-old white man presented with several episodes of hematochezia. Colonoscopy demonstrated multiple colonic blebs localized mainly in the distal transverse colon. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and computed tomography of the abdomen did not reveal any abnormalities. The patient required several blood transfusions and eventually required a subtotal colectomy with ileosigmoid anastomosis for definitive bleeding control. Pathology was remarkable for multifocal vascular ectasia, consistent with the diagnosis of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome.
