Pigmented spindle cell nevus: clues for differentiating it from spindle cell malignant melanoma. A comprehensive survey including clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and FISH studies.

Pigmented spindle cell nevus (PSCN), also known as Reed nevus, is a distinctive melanocytic tumor that can show worrisome clinical and histologic features mimicking a malignant melanoma. From a series of 46 pigmented spindle cell melanocytic lesions, including 22 PSCN and 24 spindle cell malignant melanomas (SCMMs), we collected clinical and histopathologic characteristics and evaluated cell cycle and apoptosis regulators by immunohistochemistry. Moreover, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using probes targeting 6p25 (RREB1), 11q13 (CCND1), 6q23 (MYB), and centromere 6 was performed. P

Hypercalcemia in a patient with malignant melanoma arising in congenital giant pigmented nevus. A case of increased serum level of parathyroid hormone-related protein.

We describe a 43-year-old Japanese female who developed hypercalcemia associated with malignant melanoma. The patient underwent three resections of tumors on her groin and buttock secondary to a bathing trunk congenital nevus, and the histopathological findings showed benign congenital nevi. At the age of 42 years, she developed a malignant melanoma under the giant pigmented nevus in her groin. Fourteen months after the diagnosis of melanoma, she developed metastases to the lung, para-aortic lymph nodes and bones accompanied by hypercalcemia resulting from a remarkable increase in the serum le

Vitiligo Coexistent with Nevus Depigmentosus: This Was Treated with Narrow-Band UVB and These Lesions Were Followed Using the Mexameter®, a Pigment-Measuring Device.

Nevus depigmentosus (ND) is a congenital, non-progressive, hypopigmented lesion that is usually stable throughout an affected individual's lifetime. The clinical features of vitiligo are similar to those of ND, but the two diseases have different treatment responses and prognoses. We report here on a rare case of vitiligo that was coexistent with ND. Both conditions were treated with narrow-band UVB. An 11-year-old boy presented with two distinct types of hypopigmented lesions, one on the forehead and the other on his back. The first was a hypopigmented patch with leukotrichia, and it was inci

Pigmented Epithelioid Melanocytoma (PEM)/Animal Type Melanoma (ATM): Quest for an Origin. Report of One Unusual Case Indicating Follicular Origin and Another Arising in an Intradermal Nevus.

Pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma (PEM) is a tumor encompassing epithelioid blue nevus of Carney complex (EBN of CNC) and was previously termed animal-type melanoma. Histologically PEMs are heavily pigmented spindled and epithelioid dermal melanocytic tumors with infiltrative borders, however, their origin remains unclear. Stem cells for the epidermis and hair follicle are located in the bulge area of the hair follicle with the potential to differentiate into multiple lineages. Multiple cutaneous carcinomas, including follicular cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (FSCC), are thought to arise f

Model-guided non-whitening endpoint for 755-nm picosecond laser treatment of acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (ABNOM) in pigmented skin: A randomized split-face trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a major concern in laser treatment of dermal melanocytosis in pigmented skin, particularly when immediate whitening is used as the therapeutic endpoint. OBJECTIVE: To compare a computational model-guided non-whitening endpoint with the conventional whitening endpoint for treating acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (ABNOM) using a 755-nm picosecond alexandrite laser. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, evaluator-blinded, split-face trial, 30 Asian patients (Fitzpatrick skin types III-V) underwent 3 sessions at 6-month in

Clinical characteristics and treatment of 52 cases of phakomatosis pigmentovascularis.

Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis is a rare syndrome characterized by widespread capillary malformation and pigmented nevus. The objective of this study was to evaluate its characteristics and treatment. Fifty-two patients presenting between 2003 and 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Type IIa (port-wine stain and dermal melanocytosis with oculocutaneous involvement) was most common. Systemic involvement was observed in 17.3% and it was not significantly correlated to extent of capillary malformation or pigmented nevus. However, systemic involvement was significantly frequent in patients with n

Hypopigmented Reed nevus.

Reed nevus, also named pigmented spindle cell nevus, is a peculiar melanocytic nevus, now regarded as a variant of Spitz nevus by the majority of authors. It is characterized by spindle-shaped melanocytes disposed in nests located in epidermis and papillary dermis. It is usually heavily pigmented, and many melanophages may also be present. Hypopigmented Reed nevus shows all the typical features of conventional pigmented spindle cell nevus, but it does not contain abundant melanin. This variant of Reed nevus is poorly described in literature, so we report five cases of hypopigmented Reed nevus

Perinevoid Alopecia: A Case Report.

Perinevoid alopecia has been described as an associated alopecia surrounding a pigmented nevus due to an inflammatory response against nevus structures. It is described as a part of other nevocentric phenomena in which a cellular inflammatory response against nevus antigens develops. A 35-year-old male presented with a unique area of non-scarring alopecia surrounding an asymptomatic, pigmented nevus with a 1-month evolution. Trichoscopic and histologic findings were compatible with alopecia areata (AA). One month after excision, hair regrowth was reported by the patient. We concluded that peri

Sinonasal blue nevus: a case report and review.

Blue nevus is a type of uncommon benign pigmented lesion in the skin or the mucosa of human body which is featured by pigmented dendritic melanocytes and spindled melanocytic cells. Sinonasal blue nevus is extremely rare. We reported a sinonasal blue nevus case with the background of pituitary adenoma, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension (including endoscopic and histological pictures). Further, the existing literature about blue nevus is reviewed. This paper puts a spotlight on the potential correlation between blue nevus with the endocrine system disorder and provides support for furt

Blue Nevus of the Hard Palate: The Importance of a Careful Examination in an Emergency Setting.

Oral common blue nevus is an asymptomatic, benign, rare, pigmented lesion and sometimes clinically indistinguishable from other pigmented lesions such as the cellular blue nevus or early-stage malignant melanoma. Since it shows clinical similarities with a malignant lesion and with cellular blue nevus that can itself suffer malignant transformation, the decisive diagnosis is crucial for adequate treatment, follow-up, and prognosis. Diagnosis confirmation is given by histological analysis, the reason why most oral pigmented lesions are excised. The following case presents an asymptomatic oral p

Nevus cell aggregates in the placenta. A histochemical and electron microscopic study.

This is a report of the histochemical and ultrastructural analysis of nevus cell aggregates in the placenta from a neonate with a giant pigmented nevus. Although the distinction between aberrant migration of neural crest elements and blood-borne metastasis from the giant pigmented nevus is not readily resolved, the authors favor the former as an explanation of this unusual placental lesion.

Linear arrangement of multiple deep penetrating nevi: report of first case and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Deep penetrating nevus is a recently described variant of melanocytic nevi with clinical and histopathological features that may be confused with malignant melanoma, blue nevus, pigmented Spitz nevus, or congenital melanocytic nevus. We report a case with linear arrangement of multiple deep penetrating nevi. To our knowledge, such presentation has never been reported in the literature. OBSERVATIONS: We describe a patient with multiple darkly pigmented lesions in the right periauricular area, above and behind the ear. The histopathological features of these lesions were consistent

Laser treatment of pigmented lesions in children.

A variety of lasers can be used to effectively treat cutaneous pigmentation in children. Furthermore, using the principle of selective photothermolysis, several pigment-specific lasers can be used to achieve significant clinical improvement if not complete removal of pigmented lesions with greatly reduced risks of scarring, textural or pigmentary changes. A summary of laser treatments for pigmented lesions that commonly present in children including café-au-lait macules, nevus of Ota and other dermal melanocytosis, congenital melanocytic nevus, nevus spilus, lentigines, epidermal nevus, Becker

Cellular blue nevus with nevus cells in regional lymph nodes: a lesion that mimics melanoma.

We report the case of a young man who had a large, firm, nodule covered by darkly pigmented skin over the outer aspect of the right ankle and palpable right inguinal lymph nodes. The mole had enlarged rapidly during the past month, contained deeply pigmented cells with increased cellularity and mitotic activity and groups of intensely pigmented nevus cells within the marginal sinus of the inguinal nodes. The excised mass with inguinal lymphadenectomy was reported as benign cellular nevus with benign nevus cell aggregates in lymph nodes. The purpose of this report is to emphasize how cellular b
