Feline plague in New Mexico: risk factors and transmission to humans.

The epidemiologic features of 60 cases of feline plague from 1977-1985 in New Mexico are reviewed. The most frequent clinical presentation was lethargy, anorexia, fever, and enlarged lymph nodes or abscesses. A history of hunting rodents was reported in 75 per cent of all cases. Five human plague cases were associated with five feline cases. Recommendations are presented for prevention of plague infection and transmission to humans, including restraining cats from roaming and hunting by neutering and keeping them indoors, treating them for fleas, and seeking medical care for febrile illnesses,

Epidemiologic and clinical features of an outbreak of bubonic plague in New Mexico.

An outbreak of seven cases of bubonic plague in New Mexico was investigated. Clinical features were studied and correlated with field studies in an attmept to determine the source of infection in patients with indefinite histories of exposure. Most patients presented with fever, malaise, and an acute painful lymphadenitis (bubo). One death occurred in a patient with bubonic-septicemic plague complicated by meningitis due to Yersinia pestis. All patients lived in rural or semirural areas, and most had been in the general vicinity of their usual residence during the six days prior to onset of sy

Hot Air Balloon Fatalities in New Mexico: The Forensic Pathology Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Albuquerque New Mexico is the "hot air balloon capital of the world," with balloons flying throughout the year and during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The medical literature regarding morbidity and mortality in hot air balloon accidents is relatively scarce. METHODS: A series of fatal, hot air balloon accidents were identified by querying and analyzing the databases of the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico from 1972 to 2021. RESULTS: Twenty-one lethal cases from 11 hot air balloon accidents were evaluated. Fifty-seven percent of decedents were ma

Excessive alcohol use and drug overdose deaths, New Mexico, 2015-2016.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol use is an important component of a person's risk for drug overdose death. But alcohol's contribution to overdose death risk has not been well quantified. We aimed to quantify the role of excessive alcohol use, particularly as defined by a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) ≥0.08 g/dL, in drug overdose deaths in New Mexico (NM). METHODS: The study was conducted in 2018. We abstracted death records (scene investigation, toxicology, pathology) for all drug overdose deaths in NM during 2015-2016, information on BAC, other indications of alcohol, risk factors, comorbid

Widespread insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti L. from New Mexico, U.S.A.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are vectors of a variety of emerging viral pathogens, including yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus. This species has established endemic populations in all cities across southern New Mexico sampled to date. Presently, control of Aedes-borne viruses relies on deployment of insecticides to suppress mosquito populations, but the evolution of insecticide resistance threatens the success of vector control programs. While insecticide resistance is quite common in Ae. aegypti field populations across much of the U.S., the resistance status of this s

Periconceptional binge drinking and acculturation among pregnant Latinas in New Mexico.

Binge drinking during pregnancy might lead to the development of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in the offspring. Latinas are often considered a low-risk group for alcohol abuse, although recent reports indicate that the prevalence of alcohol consumption in this group is increasing due to changing cultural norms. The predictors of alcohol consumption during pregnancy among Latinas are largely unknown. We explored predictors of periconceptional drinking among Latinas (n=155) recruited into an ongoing cohort study at the University of New Mexico. Women were interviewed by a bilingual trained i

A new rhabdiasid species from Norops megapholidotus (Sauria: Polychrotidae) from Mexico.

Rhabdias leonae n. sp., a parasite of the lungs of Norops megapholidotus, is described and illustrated. The Mexican taxon differs from the other species in the genus by a combination of characters: possession of 4 lips, corpus slightly inflated, slightly postequatorial vulva, and presence of swollen cuticle of anterior and posterior ends. This is the 12th species described in the Neotropical realm and the first species of Rhabdias described from an endemic Mexican lizard.

Factors predicting cesarean delivery for American Indian women in New Mexico.

BACKGROUND: American Indian women have one of the lowest cesarean delivery rates among all ethnic groups evaluated in the United States. Our objective was to identify risk factors for cesarean delivery among American Indian women in New Mexico. METHODS: Live birth certificate data (1994) from the New Mexico Bureau of Vital Records and Health statistics were used to compare American Indian women who had a cesarean delivery with those who had a vaginal delivery. We examined demographic, prenatal, and intrapartum factors to determine risk factors for cesarean delivery. RESULTS: In 1994 American

Venezuelan equine encephalitis vaccination survey in Arizona and New Mexico, 1972.

Field studies were conducted in 1972 to determine the immunization status of equines along the Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico borders. Interviews with horse owners were conducted along roads selected at random in the counties of Santa Cruz and Yuma, Ariz., and in Dona Ana County, N. Mex. At least 450 horse owners in each county were asked about the vaccination status of their animals, and information was taken on 1,260 animals. Blood specimens were obtained from every third equine, regardless of stated vaccination status, and tested for the presence of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE), we

Industrial air pollution and low birth weight in New Mexico, USA.

In recent decades, the low birth weight (LBW) rate in New Mexico has consistently exceeded the Unites States average. Maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy may be a significant contributor to LBW in offspring. This study investigated the links between maternal residential exposure to air pollution from industrial sources and the risk of LBW in offspring. The analysis included 22,375 LBW cases and 233,340 controls. It focused on 14 common chemicals listed in the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) and monitoring datasets, which have abundant monitoring samples. The Emission Weighted Pro

Childhood fatalities in new Mexico: medical examiner-investigated cases, 2000-2010.

To better understand risk factors and populations at risk of childhood fatalities, a review of all records of childhood deaths (≤19 years) between 2000 and 2010 from New Mexico's statewide medical examiner was conducted. Annually, 313-383 childhood deaths were investigated (3820 total). Males and American Indians were overrepresented (62% and 20.4% of deaths, respectively). The most common manner of death was natural (44.8%), followed by accidental (31.4%), homicide (8.8%), suicide (8.8%), and undetermined (4.1%). Infants under 1 year of age accounted for 41.4% of deaths. Motor vehicle crashes

Comparative genomics of 2009 seasonal plague (Yersinia pestis) in New Mexico.

Plague disease caused by the gram-negative bacterium Yersinia pestis routinely affects animals and occasionally humans, in the western United States. The strains native to the North American continent are thought to be derived from a single introduction in the late 19(th) century. The degree to which these isolates have diverged genetically since their introduction is not clear, and new genomic markers to assay the diversity of North American plague are highly desired. To assay genetic diversity of plague isolates within confined geographic areas, draft genome sequences were generated by 454 p

Residence-linked human plague in New Mexico: a habitat-suitability model.

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, has been detected in fleas and mammals throughout the western United States. This highly virulent infection is rare in humans, surveillance of the disease is expensive, and it often was assumed that risk of exposure to Y. pestis is high in most of the western United States. For these reasons, some local health departments in these plague-affected regions have hesitated to undertake surveillance and other prevention activities. To aid in targeting limited public health resources, we created a fine-resolution human plague risk map for New Mexico, t

Grassroots efforts pursue alcohol policy reform: refocusing upstream in New Mexico.

ORGANIZATION SETTING. The New Mexico Alcohol Issues Consortium (NMAIC) originated in January 1989 as a grassroots effort to focus on the reduction of driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) in New Mexico. It was the brainchild of three state health department officials and grew to include in its membership representatives from education, medicine, law enforcement, neighborhood associations, business, and local and state government. RATIONALE. New Mexico ranks at or near the top in several alcohol-related statistics, including motor vehicle fatalities, cirrhosis, and alcoholism. Furthermore, the 'alcoh

Psoroptic scabies in bignorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) in New Mexico.

Prior to 1978, no reports were made of scabies lesions or mites recovered from any Mexican bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) examined in the San Andres National Wildlife Refuge in southern New Mexico. In 1978, all of five rams harvested by hunters had live mites of the genus Psoroptes and active lesions of scabies in their ears and/or on their bodies. Deaths due to scabies were not documented during this outbreak although aerial helicopter surveys conducted in March, June and September, 1979 recorded less than half the sheep observations of five previous and similarly conducted surveys.

Endemic human plague in New Mexico: risk factors associated with infection.

A retrospective case-control study was conducted to identify risk factors, other than contact with infected animal tissues, for infection caused by Yersinia pestis in non-Indian residents of areas with endemic sylvatic plague in New Mexico. The study group consisted of 16 persons who had bacteriologically confirmed cases of plague in the period 1975-1976 and 45 controls who were matched by age, sex, and location of residence. Participants were questioned about outdoor activities, environmental conditions in and around the home, procedures of pet care, exposure to animals and insects, and medic

Incidence and Survival for Common Cancers Are Lower in New Mexico and Along the US-Mexico Border Than Elsewhere in the United States.

Background Few in-depth reports on cancer epidemiology in New Mexico or the United States-Mexico border region exist. We aim to quantify cancer incidence and survival in New Mexico and the United States-Mexico border region in New Mexico. Methods Incidence and survival were obtained using SEER*Stat 8.3. The data were divided into either New Mexico, or SEER 18 (comprised of the 17 remaining regions) and then further divided by county in New Mexico and by time period. Incidence rates were age-standardized to the 2000 US census. Five-year survival was calculated for each cancer type. Kaplan-Meier
