Predictors of attendance in a randomized clinical trial of nicotine replacement therapy with behavioral counseling.

Participant attendance at smoking cessation-counseling sessions is an important factor in treatment outcome. In this study, we examined the influence of demographic, psychological, and smoking history variables on attendance at a randomized clinical trial comparing transdermal nicotine and nicotine nasal spray that included seven sessions of behavioral group counseling. Of the 353 participants, 70.5% attended all seven sessions. Perfect attendance predicted abstinence from cigarettes at the end of treatment and at 6-month follow-up. In a logistic regression model, higher levels of education an

Systematic review and meta-analysis investigating nicotine, cotinine and carbon monoxide exposures in people who both smoke and use nicotine replacement therapy.

AIMS: To determine effects of concurrent smoking and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) use on reported heaviness of smoking, nicotine (cotinine) body fluid and exhaled air carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations. METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs, which test interventions permitting concurrent NRT use and smoking and comparing, within participants, outcomes when smoking with those when smoking and using NRT concurrently. Measurements included reported number of cigarettes smoked per day (CPD), body fluid cotinine and expired air CO concentrations. RESULTS: Twenty-nine studies

Nicotine replacement therapy and elective spinal fusion eligibility: a national analysis of insurance policy language.

OBJECTIVE: Smoking is a well-established risk factor for impaired spinal fusion, leading many insurers to require preoperative abstinence. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) supports smoking cessation without consistently demonstrating detrimental effects on spinal fusion outcomes. Nonetheless, many insurance policies for elective spinal fusion surgery treat NRT use as equivalent to active smoking, creating potential barriers for patients attempting evidence-based cessation. This study evaluated the clarity and nicotine specificity of insurer elective spinal fusion policies nationwide and iden

Should Nicotine Replacement Therapy be Provided Free of Charge? A Cost-Utility Analysis in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) during an attempt to quit smoking increases the likelihood of success by about 55%. However, out-of-pocket payment for NRT can hinder its use. AIMS AND METHODS: This study aims therefore to assess the cost-effectiveness of subsidizing NRT in Sweden. A homogeneous cohort-based Markov model was used to assess the lifetime costs and effects of subsidized NRT from a payer and societal perspective. Data to populate the model were retrieved from the literature, and selected parameters were varied in deterministic and probabilistic sens

Using a quitline plus low-cost nicotine replacement therapy to help disadvantaged smokers to quit.

OBJECTIVES: To trial an intervention in a real-life setting to motivate low-income smokers to try to quit. The intervention under trial was the addition of subsidised nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to a standard population quitline service. DESIGN: Participants were low-income smokers, recruited "cold" via either a letter in the mail or a flyer inserted in a local newspaper. The intervention group received the usual service of multisession counselling from the quitline plus access to heavily subsidised NRT. A comparison group received the usual quitline service only. Participants were fol

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Does Not Reduce Headaches Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Propensity Score-Matched Study.

BACKGROUND: A significant number of patients admitted for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) are active smokers and are at risk of developing nicotine withdrawal symptoms (e.g., cravings, irritability, insomnia, headaches, etc.). This study aimed to evaluate the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) regarding headache severity and analgesics consumption. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using prospectively collected data from 2014 to 2019 in the neurointensive care unit of the Hospices Civils in Lyon, France. We performed a propensity score matching analysis. The covari

Predicting Intention to Use Nicotine Replacement Therapy in People Attending Residential Treatment for Substance Dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is recommended as a frontline smoking cessation tool for people attending mental health and substance dependence treatment services. Previous research suggests that NRT is underutilized in these settings. To improve the use of NRT among people attending residential treatment for substance use disorders, it is important that the factors influencing smokers' decisions to use NRT are understood. The study aimed to examine (1) smoking cessation strategies used by participants in previous quit attempts, (2) participants' attitudes toward NRT (i.e., safe

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Combined With Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smoking Cessation: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Further evidence suggests that repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is an effective method to reduce tobacco craving among smokers. HYPOTHESIS: As relapse is common within a few days after smoking cessation, we hypothesized that combining the anti-craving effects of rTMS with Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to attenuate withdrawal symptoms could increase abstinence rates in smokers with severe nicotine dependence who quit smoking. METHODS: Thirty-seven smokers who failed to quit with the usual treatments were randomly assigned to two treatment groups to receive

Comparison of withdrawal symptom intensity between hypnosis and nicotine-replacement-therapies: A pilot study.

Smoking cessation is a global public health issue. Nicotine dependence is a dynamic process that is not limited to physical dependence. Hypnosis can be helpful in the global management of smoking cessation. We explored this effect by comparing the effects of hypnosis and nicotine-replacement therapies (NRT) on tobacco withdrawal.Thirty participants were included in this comparative-randomized pilot study in parallel controlled groups after ethical validation. Participants were recruited by a general practitioner and had standardized consultations with addiction and hypnosis specialists and ada

Effect of nicotine replacement therapy on quitting by young adults in a trial comparing cessation services.

CONTEXT: Young adult smokers have the highest smoking prevalence among all US age groups but are least likely to use evidence-based cessation counseling or medication to quit. OBJECTIVE: Use and effectiveness of nicotine patch were explored in a randomized trial evaluating smoking cessation interventions with this population. PARTICIPANTS: Smokers aged 18 to 30 (n = 3094) were recruited through online and off-line methods and from telephone quit lines and analyzed. DESIGN: Smokers were enrolled in a pretest-posttest trial, and randomized to 1 of 3 cessation services. SETTING: Trial deliver

The effects of alcohol use on smoking cessation treatment with nicotine replacement therapy: An observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Concurrent users of tobacco and alcohol are at greater risk of harm than use of either substance alone. It remains unclear how concurrent tobacco and alcohol use affects smoking cessation across levels of alcohol use and related problems. This study assessed the relationship between smoking cessation and levels of alcohol use problems. METHODS: 59,018 participants received nicotine replacement therapy through a smoking cessation program. Alcohol use and related symptoms were assessed using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-10) and the AUDIT-Concise (AUDIT-C).

Awareness and perceptions of nicotine replacement therapy among adults in Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) are established evidence-based interventions for smoking cessation. In Saudi Arabia, where tobacco use remains a significant public health concern, understanding public awareness, perceptions, and motivations related to NRT use is essential for designing effective cessation strategies. This study aimed to assess awareness, perceptions, motivation to quit smoking, and self-reported nicotine dependence related to NRT use among adults in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Between February and May 2025, a cross-sectional online survey was distributed via so

An Observational Study of Nicotine Replacement Therapy Availability Through Pharmacist Prescribing in the California Central Valley.

BACKGROUND: California's Central Valley has high rates of tobacco product use and low rates of access to healthcare providers, making it difficult for residents to acquire effective tobacco cessation treatment. To address this disparity, California pharmacists can act as healthcare providers, with the ability to provide counseling and independently prescribe nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) medications through a process known as "furnishing". METHODS: All corporate and independent pharmacies in the Central Valley who serve the general community were contacted (n = 586) to ask whether pharma

How soon should alternative smoking cessation treatments be offered after incomplete response to nicotine replacement therapy?

BACKGROUND: Several effective interventions exist for tobacco dependence. These operate via different mechanisms, making treatment sequencing an important clinical option. As total time in treatment is often short, determining the length of each trial is crucial. In this analysis, we examine how cessation probability varies with time in treatment in a large program providing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). METHODS: We used data on 87,952 people enrolled in the Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) program between 2014 and 2024. We fit a log-logistic interval-censored survival mode

Oral side effects of locally delivered nicotine replacement therapy: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine replacement therapy is the first choice pharmacotherapy for smoking cessation. Oral side effects caused due to NRT lead to discontinuation of treatment. The objective of this meta-analysis was to look for the certainty of evidence on the number of patients that reported oral side effects due to the use of NRT. METHOD: Eligible studies were selected and data extraction was carried out independently into a pre-tested data extraction form. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane Tool. The heterogeneity between the studies was assessed using Chi-square and I2 tests. Mean dif

Nicotine replacement therapy for vaping cessation among mono and dual users: A mixed methods preliminary study.

Many adults express interest in e-cigarette cessation; however, there are few empirically tested interventions for quitting vaping. This study seeks to (1) evaluate reasons for quitting e-cigarettes in treatment-seeking adults, and (2) assess the feasibility and acceptability of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for e-cigarette cessation. Adult daily e-cigarette users completed qualitative interviews about quitting e-cigarettes, then were randomized to either 28-day supply of combination NRT (21 mg patches, 4 mg lozenges) + supportive booklet or Quitline referral. Primary aims were feasibilit
