Four cases of Horner's syndrome, two in dogs and two in cats, are described. Miosis, ptosis, and enophthalmos were present in three of the cases and in addition, protrusion of the nictitating membrane was present in the fourth case. In the two cases described in cats, there was also evidence of peripheral vasodilation in the skin of the face on the same side as the Horner's syndrome.

We studied the ultrastructural changes of the corneal epithelium of the experimental rabbit dry eye and the effects of three topically applied eye-drops. A 20-year-old quarter horse gelding was presented for routine dental examination. Periodontal disease and luxation of tooth 108 was diagnosed and oral extraction was planned. The cardiovascular effects of the psychotomimetic DOM were investigated in pentobarbital-anesthetized cats. DOM (1,2 and 4 mg/kg, i.v.) produced a rise in mean blood pressure accompanied by bradycardia. DOM (1 and 2 mg/kg, i.v.) also produced a contraction of the decentralized nictitating membrane. The aim of the present experiments was to study the effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on the responses to postganglionic stimulation of two models of the peripheral sympathetic nervous system: the isolated nictitating membrane of the cat and the guinea-pig isolated atria. Repeated subcutaneous injections of ganglionic blocking agents in cats were found to cause a supersensitivity towards adrenaline in the submaxillary gland and the nictitating membrane. In vitro incubation of adrenaline with acetaldehyde resulted in the formation of an amorphous product (MA 3) which gave origin to two spots on chromatography plates. Preparative TLC allowed us to separate the corresponding substances, MA 4 and MA 5.
