AIDS-related lymphomas in Nigeria.

Aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), including primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, lymphoblastic lymphoma and non-endemic Burkitt's lymphoma have been recognized as AIDS-defining cancers in most developed countries. However, HIV/AIDS epidemics appear not to have been associated with higher incidence of lymphomas in Africa. We therefore carried out this study to highlight the significance or otherwise of HIV/AIDS epidemics in the pathogenesis of lymphomas in a population of Nigerians with the disease. Since January 1993 to the present, all patients with haematologic cancers are r

Juvenile periodontitis in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Juvenile periodontitis is a form of periodontitis characterised by a pattern of rapid vertical loss of alveolar bone around the permanent first molars and incisors. In this hospital based retrospective study of juvenile periodontitis in Ibadan, 34 cases in the age range 17-34 years were seen over a period of five years. The mean age was 23.2 years. Diagnosis was made on accepted clinical and radiological parameters. The findings showed a low prevalence of 1.56%, (64.7% of localised juvenile periodontitis, 35.3% of generalised juvenile periodontitis). There was a 2:1 female to male relationship

Skin cancer from 775 patients in the savannah showed a preponderance of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the leg related to neglected, poorly managed and chronic ulcers or scars from burns or injuries. SCC of the head and neck had no predisposing factor. Malignant melanoma overwhelmingly affected the feet, dermatofibrosarcoma affected the trunk and Kaposi sarcoma affected the limbs. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) comprised only 2% of all skin cancers. The 18 albino patients had a higher frequency of both SCC and BCC mostly on the head and neck. Excisional surgery was generally effective, the wound

The aim is to compare them with those in the only other reports from Nigeria between 18 and 42 years ago from Ibadan in the west of the country. The ages at presentation ranged between 6 months and 5 years with no sex preponderance. Most of the children were well nourished with the major features being delay in walking, swollen wrists and ankles and genu varum. The majority of cases in the

Parathyroid adenoma in northern Nigeria.

A middle-aged farmer and a female student presented with osteitis fibrosa cystica with nephrocalcinosis in the former and nephrolithiasis in the latter due to primary hyperparathyroidism. Hypercalcaemia was present in both cases and neck exploration revealed a large solitary parathyroid adenoma which was excised. Because primary hyperparathyroidism is less common in tropical countries doctors may be less familiar with the early manifestations of the disease. The number of patients thus undiagnosed and untreated is unknown.

Q fever in Sokoto, Nigeria.

There is very little information available about the prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in Africa. We obtained blood from 75 Nigerians hospitalized in Sokoto for a variety of acute medical conditions. Their age range was 7 months to 50 years; there were 39 males and 36 females. Antibody titers were determined to phase I and phase II C. burnetii antigens using a microimmunofluorescence test. Thirty-three (44%) had an antibody titer of greater than or equal to 1:8 to phase II C. burnetii. We conclude on the basis of this limited survey that Q fever is common in Nigeria.

Traumatic hyphaema in Kaduna, Nigeria.

In a 2-year prospective study of 76 patients with traumatic hyphaema seen at the Ahmadu Bello University Hospital, Kaduna, 75% were under 20 years of age. A low male to female ratio of 3 to 1 relative to other reports was noted. Hyphaema occurred in the left eye 1.6 times more often than in the right eye. Thrown objects, such as sticks and stones, caused hyphaema in the largest number of patients in the series. Only 34.2% of the patients reported for care within the first 24 hours of injury, while as many as 46.9% of them had total hyphaema. These factors are vastly different from most other r
