Diet, Physical Activity, and Daylight Exposure Patterns in Night-Shift Workers and Day Workers.

BACKGROUND: Night-shift work has been reported to have an impact on nutrition, daylight exposure, and physical activity, which might play a role in observed health effects. Because these exposures show diurnal variation, and shift work has been related with disturbances in the circadian rhythm, the timing of assessment of these factors requires careful consideration. Our aim was to describe the changes in patterns of diet, physical activity, and daylight exposure associated with night-shift work. METHODS: We conducted an observational study among female healthcare workers either regularly wor

Sleep and recovery in physicians on night call: a longitudinal field study.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that physicians' night-call duty may cause impaired performance and adverse effects on subjective health, but there is limited knowledge about effects on sleep duration and recovery time. In recent years occupational stress and impaired well-being among anaesthesiologists have been frequently reported for in the scientific literature. Given their main focus on handling patients with life-threatening conditions, when on call, one might expect sleep and recovery to be negatively affected by work, especially in this specialist group. The aim of the present study was t

Steroid hormones, vitamin D and melatonin in rapidly rotating shift female hospital workers.

Disruption of circadian rhythm caused by night-shift work has been associated with several disorders, including cancer. Health care personnel often works at night to insure the continuity of care. Aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of night-shift work on serum and saliva levels of steroid hormones, vitamin D, and melatonin in hospital female workers. Ninety-seven female hospital workers were recruited: 46 nurses performing clockwise rapid rotating shift schedule on a 5-day cycle, including one night, and 51 day workers. Thirteen steroid hormones and vitamin D were assessed in morn

An ethnographic study of night blindness "ratauni" among women in the Terai of Nepal.

Night blindness is the most common ocular condition representing moderate-to-severe vitamin A deficiency in children. Very little, however, is known about maternal night blindness, which has recently been reported to occur frequently during pregnancy in parts of south-east Asia. In Nepal, the prevalence of night blindness is reported to be 16%. We carried out an ethnographic study of night blindness during pregnancy in the south-eastern, rural plains of Nepal as preliminary research for a case-control study of the determinants of this condition. The purpose of the research was to identify loca

Anesthesia with abdominal surgery leads to intense REM sleep during the first postoperative week.

Characteristics of nocturnal sleep were investigated in six patients after anesthesia and cholecystectomy and in another six after anesthesia and gastroplasty. All night polysomnographic recordings were obtained while each patient slept in a private surgical ward room through two nights before and five or six nights after operation. Anesthesia included thiopental, N2O, isoflurane, and fentanyl. Postoperative analgesia was provided with parenteral morphine. Other aspects of care were routine. Nocturnal sleep was markedly disturbed after both surgical procedures. Throughout the operative night a

Nighttime Transfer out of Surgical ICU Are Associated With Higher Readmission.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical intensive care unit (SICU) beds are a limited resource. We hypothesized that nighttime transfers from the SICU are associated with higher rates of SICU readmission. METHODS: All patients who underwent thoracic surgery between 2022 and 2024 were included. Patients were grouped based on time of transfer. Nighttime transfers occurred between 5:30 PM and 5:30 AM. Risk-adjusted multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between transfer timing and SICU readmission, complications, and mortality. RESULTS: A total of 216 patients were analyzed, includ

Comparative evaluation of gut health, inflammatory factors, and sleep quality among shift workers: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Night-shift work disrupts the body's natural circadian rhythm, leading to impaired sleep quality, altered gut function, and reduced emotional well-being. Circadian misalignment affects sleep duration and efficiency, disturbs gastrointestinal (GI) regulation, and increases the risk of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. These cumulative effects can significantly impact overall health and quality of life in shift workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted among 200 individuals (100 day-shift and 100 night-shift workers) aged 25-40 ye

Effects of night-float shifts on cognitive function among radiology residents.

BACKGROUND: Many radiology programs utilize a night-float system to mitigate the effects of fatigue, improve patient care, and provide faster report turnaround times. Prior studies have demonstrated an increase in discrepancy rates during night-float shifts. OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to examine the effects of night-float shift work on radiology resident cognition. We hypothesized that there would be diminished cognitive function on testing following night-float shifts when compared to testing following day shifts. METHODS: Diagnostic radiology residents in their second to fifth ye

Associations of Ultra-Processed Food Consumption and Night Eating With GI Symptom-Specific Anxiety in Reproductive-Age Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder often accompanied by metabolic disturbances, night eating patterns, and gastrointestinal-related distress. This cross-sectional study examined the associations between ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption, night eating symptoms, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptom-specific anxiety in 205 women (aged 18-50 years) with a physician-confirmed PCOS diagnosis. Participants completed validated questionnaires assessing UPF consumption (sQ-HPF), the severity of night eating symptoms (NEQ), and GI-specific anxiety (VSI), alongside self-rep

Improving urinary incontinence management and sleep quality with wetness sensing technology in absorbent products.

Using absorbent products to manage the urinary incontinence (UI) of dependent residents in care facilities (such as nursing homes, and hospitals) requires frequent routine checks throughout the day and night to see if products need changing. Timely changes of saturated products are necessary to avoid long-lasting skin exposure to wet absorbent products, unpleasant odor, leaking of such products and embarrassing moments for the users. Limited staffing, high workload, and peaks on the demand for caregiving are challenges that hamper swift support for the care dependent population. This paper des

Soft tissue infection and follow-up for an unsheltered patient: the role of Street Medicine providers in bridging gaps in care.

Street Medicine is a volunteer-run initiative for low-resource healthcare settings. Formed to bridge gaps in care for persons experiencing homelessness, these organisations work to provide preventative medicine through maintenance care and follow-up. However, there are limits to what Street Medicine can accomplish given the geographical radius covered, lack of available transportation options and vulnerable sleeping locations night to night for the patients served. The subject of this case report is a middle-aged Spanish-speaking unsheltered man who began his care with a Street Medicine team.

Antihypertensive therapy: nocturnal dippers and nondippers. Do we treat them differently?

Hypertension is a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Management of hypertension is generally based on office blood pressure since it is easy to determine. Since casual blood pressure readings in the office are influenced by various factors, they do not represent basal blood pressure. Dipping of the blood pressure in the night is a normal physiological change that can be blunted by cardiovascular risk factors and the severity of hypertension. Nondipping pattern is associated with disease severity, left ventricular hypertrophy, increased proteinuria, secondary forms of hy
