Night-eating symptoms and 2-year weight change in parents enrolled in the QUALITY cohort.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The timing of food intake may be implicated in weight gain. This study tested the hypothesis that symptoms commonly associated with night-eating syndrome are related to measures of weight gain in adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Parents participating in QUALITY (Québec Adipose and Lifestyle InvesTigation in Youth) completed the night eating questionnaire (NEQ) at baseline (2005-2008) and at follow-up (2008-2010). Height and weight were measured and self-report questionnaire data were available for 388 parents (59% female, mean (s.d.) age: 41.8±5.7, mean (s.d.) body mass index (

Investigating the Impact of Night Eating Disorder Upon Quality of Life Among University College Students, India.

BACKGROUND: The association between night eating and quality of life has been well documented and seemingly has had an impact on both sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, recent evidence about this relationship among university students is limited, and research on eating disorders (ED) is sporadic. The aims of this study are to investigate the prevalence of eating disorders and to explore the associations between these outcomes with body mass index (BMI), insomnia, and HRQoL among Delhi University students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire on night eating qu

A proposed trumping scheme for other specified feeding or eating disorder: Comment on Walsh et al., 2023.

The recent systematic review by Walsh, Hagan, & Lockwood (Int J Eat Disord, 2022) highlights the importance of further distinguishing atypical anorexia nervosa (atypical AN) from other feeding and eating disorders. The lack of a trumping scheme within other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED) hinders intervention selection in the clinical context and reduces reliability of diagnostic classification in research samples. Thus, we propose a trumping scheme within OSFED that mirrors the existing diagnostic algorithm in the main DSM-5-TR feeding and eating disorders section. According to t

[Nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder that responds to topiramate].

INTRODUCTION: Nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder is a non-REM sleep parasomnia that is associated to other sleep disorders, especially sleepwalking. It becomes chronic, is not remitting and consists in episodes of compulsive eating during the night, which are then partially or completely forgotten by the patient. This condition must be differentiated from night-eating syndrome, which is far more common and is linked to endocrinological and psychiatric disorders, as well as to other disorders involving eating behaviour during sleeping hours. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old male who had suffere

A review of nighttime eating disorders.

Nighttime eating is categorized as either night eating syndrome (NES) or sleep-related eating disorder (SRED). These conditions represent an interruption in the overnight fast that characterizes human sleep. A critical review of the literature on NES and SRED will suggest that they are situated at opposite poles of a disordered eating spectrum. NES could be considered an abnormality in the circadian rhythm of meal timing with a normal circadian timing of sleep onset. Conversely, the feeding behavior in SRED is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating after an arousal from nighttime sleep

[Clinical and psychological analysis of eating disorders in obesity].

UNLABELLED: Clinical neurological study and psychometric testing of 36 women with primary obesity, body weight index being over 30 kg/m2, have been conducted. The sample was divided into 4 groups: 1st--without emotiogenic eating behavior (EEB); 2d--with permanent EEB; 3d--with compulsive eating disorder; 4s--with night eating syndrome. All patients did not differ by body weight, body weight index, hereditary anamnesis data and neuroendocrinic disorder expression. Patients with EEB shared a lot of common features, which distinguish them from the patients without EEB: the eating behavior develop

Eating disorders in schizophrenia: implications for research and management.

Objective. Despite evidence from case series, the comorbidity of eating disorders (EDs) with schizophrenia is poorly understood. This review aimed to assess the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of EDs in schizophrenia patients and to examine whether the management of EDs can be improved. Methods. A qualitative review of the published literature was performed using the following terms: "schizophrenia" in association with "eating disorders," "anorexia nervosa," "bulimia nervosa," "binge eating disorder," or "night eating syndrome." Results. According to our literature review, there i

[Chrononutrition and metabolic health: impact of meal timing on obesity and metabolic risk].

Scientific evidence suggests that it is not only the quality of the diet and the quantity of food that influence body weight and metabolic health, but also the time at which food is consumed. Chrononutrition is an emerging branch of chronobiology that studies how the timing of food intake interacts with the body's biological rhythms, particularly circadian rhythms. The aim of this paper is to review the current evidence on chrononutrition and its relationship with obesity and metabolic health. Individual chronotype and the duration of the eating window have been linked to obesity, metabolic sy

[Sleeping and eating disorders].

Over the last three decades there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of eating disorders (ED) in western society. The main syndromes are anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and non-specified eating disorders (ED-NOS). These disorders are with high morbidity and life threatening complications. Sleep disturbances are predominant symptom in these disorders. Researches have examined sleep disorders among people suffering from eating disorders, using different methods: sleep polysomnography, actigraph and self report questionnaires. The article presents the diagnostic criteria o

Prevalence and clinical characteristics of unremembered nocturnal eating in diabetic subjects: Kurume sleep trouble in obesity and metabolic disorders (KUSTOMED) study.

Nighttime food intake is associated with weight gain and higher HbA1c levels. We experienced night eaters who have no memory of their nocturnal eating in the morning. In this study, the curious night eating behavior was designated as "unremembered nocturnal eating syndrome (UNES)". We screened 1,169 patients with diabetes for sleep quality and abnormal eating behavior at night using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire with an additional question regarding UNES. When abnormal nocturnal eating behavior was noted, detailed clinical information was extracted from interviews with the p

Alexithymia is not related to severity of night eating behavior: a useful distinction from other eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Patients affected by Night Eating Syndrome (NES) complain of insomnia, mood, anxiety and overeating, which have all been linked to difficulties in dealing with emotions, but no research has examined the levels of alexithymia among NES patients. We compared the levels of alexithymia among samples of: NES patients, insomniac patients who do not eat at night, and a control group. METHOD: The study included 153 participants: 34 with NES, 47 with insomnia, and 72 in the control group. Half of the NES group was recruited in a weight and eating disorders center in Philadelphia and the oth

[Nighttime eating disorders--clinical symptoms and treatment].

Nighttime eating is categorized as either night eating syndrome (NES) or the sleep-related eating disorder (SRED). Both diseases are often connected with an increase of the body mass, obesity, and with psychiatric disturbances. NES is characterized by evening hyperphagia, abnormally increased food intake after the evening meal, nocturnal awakings with ingestions, morning anorexia, and insomnia. Patients suffering from NES are aware of their nocturnal ingestions. It is suggested that NES is an abnormality in the circadian rhythm of meal timing that occurs in people with normal circadian rhythm

[Eating disorders in obese individuals--a psychiatric or internal medicine issue?].

Many relations are connecting obesity and eating disorders--one disease is often modifying the other. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are mostly treated by psychiatrists. Internal medicine specialists are mostly involved only in complications (e.g. malnutrition, ion disorders). Obesity is mostly treated only by internists. Psychiatrists are only involved in some depressive patients. Obese patients with eating disorders are mostly not sent to psychiatric diagnostics. In this article an overview of eating disorder symptoms and classification is given--binge eating disorder, night eating syn

Comparison of eating disorders and eating behaviors in adults with and without type 2 diabetes prior to bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) are group of psychological disorders that significantly impair physical health and psychosocial function. ED consists wide range of morbidity such as loss of eating control, binge eating disorder (BED), night eating syndrome, and bulimia nervosa. Eating behavior is a wide range term that includes food choices, eating patterns, eating problems. In this study, we compared eating disorders and eating behaviors in adults with and without type 2 diabetes prior to bariatric surgery. METHODS: 284 participants with class III obesity were included in the single center

Clinical and polysomnographic features of sleep-related eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related eating disorder is a recently described clinical syndrome that combines characteristics of both eating and sleep disorders. Nocturnal partial arousals are followed by rapid ingestion of food and subsequent poor memory for the episode. Only two case series examining this disorder have been published, and both are from the same sleep disorders center in a general hospital. METHOD: The author describes 23 consecutive cases of sleep-related eating disorder that presented to the Sleep Disorders Center at McLean Hospital. All patients were administered at a standardized cl

Reliability and cross-validation of the Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ): Hebrew version.

BACKGROUND: Several developments in diagnosing night eating syndrome (NES) occurred during the last decade. New proposed diagnostic criteria are now available, and a short Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) was published. The study aims were to validate the NEQ for assessing NES, to identify the optimal NEQ cut-point for NES diagnosis, and to validate and test the internal reliability of the translated Hebrew version of the NEQ. METHOD: 141 participants completed the questionnaire and a diagnostic interview, divided into four groups: NES (n=59), Partial diagnosis PD-NES (n=42), other eating dis

Sleep and Eating Disorders.

Insomnia is related to an increased risk of eating disorders, while eating disorders are related to more disrupted sleep. Insomnia is also linked to poorer treatment outcomes for eating disorders. However, over the last decade, studies examining sleep and eating disorders have relied on surveys, with no objective measures of sleep for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, and only actigraphy data for binge eating disorder. Sleep disturbance is better defined for night eating syndrome, where sleep efficiency is reduced and melatonin release is delayed. Studies that include objectively measured s

OSFED Subtypes: The Need for Better Definitions.

Other specified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED) is a diagnostic category in DSM-5 describing individuals with clinically significant eating behavioral disturbances that do not meet criteria for full-threshold eating disorder diagnoses. OSFED includes five example subgroups: atypical anorexia nervosa, sub-threshold bulimia nervosa, sub-threshold binge-eating disorder, purging disorder, and night eating syndrome. A recent review of OSFED by Dang et al. aims to examine differences between OSFED and full-threshold eating disorders as well as between OSFED and healthy populations but is limite
