The concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM), nitrogen dioxide (NO,) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) were measured at 13 important traffic intersections in Pune city. In order to study the contribution of these pollutants from motor vehicles, attention was focused on the roadside, street-level concentration. The statistical analysis of the sampling results indicates that there is not only high correlation between SPM and NO2 but the levels of these pollutants are above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) laid down by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), India. The SO

Emerging evidence suggests that prenatal exposure to ambient SO2 or NO2 induces fetal brain-damage. However, effects of prenatal exposure to SO2 or NO2 on toddler neurodevelopment and the effect-modification by ambient temperature remain unclear. Therefore, a prospective birth-cohort study was conducted from 2010 to 2012 in Shanghai, and 225 mother-child pairs were followed-up from mid-to-late pregnancy until 24-36 months postpartum. During the whole pregnancy, daily SO2/NO2 and temperature levels were obtained for each woman. Gesell-Development-Schedule was used to assess toddler neurodevelop

Four-year-old spruce clones (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) cultivated in sand and provided with a complete nutrient solution, or a solution deficient in magnesium and calcium, were exposed to the pollutant mixtures SO(2)/NO(2), O(3)/NO(2), and O(3)/SO(2)/NO(2), at realistic concentrations for 32 weeks. Fumigation caused a slight increase of total N contents in current year needles, whereas in one-year-old needles N concentrations did not change. The response of nitrate reductase activity to pollutant stress depended on needle age and nutrient supply, respectively. In one-year-old needles fumigation

Breast cancer is a significant global health concern, with millions of cases diagnosed annually. Risk factors for breast cancer include obesity, physical inactivity, poor diet, and alcohol use. Urbanization introduces exposures such as traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), which may impact breast cancer risk. To assess the impact of TRAP, measured in this study using nitrogen dioxide (NO2), on the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer we conducted a secondary analysis of baseline and follow-up data from the Alberta Tomorrow Project (ATP) cohort, linked to geographic data at the postal code lev

We develop coarse-grained models for carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) that capture the vapor-liquid equilibria of both their single components and their binary mixtures over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. To achieve this, we used an equation of state (EoS), namely Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT), which utilizes a molecular-based algebraic description of the free energy of chain fluids. This significantly accelerates the exploration of the parameter space, enabling the development of coarse-grained models that provide an optimal description of the macroscopic expe

BACKGROUND: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a pulmonary irritant produced as a byproduct of bacterial anaerobic metabolism of organic materials, and is also produced as a byproduct of explosive detonations. Significant NO2 exposure results in free-radical-induced pulmonary injury that may be delayed up to 3-30 h after exposure and can progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and death. Here we present a case series of 3 patients with dose-dependent pulmonary injury consistent with NO2 inhalation following exposure to fumes from detonation of an ammonium nitrate/nitromethane (ANNM) expl

Several epidemiological studies have found some evidence suggesting that exposure to air pollutants during pregnancy increases the risk of adverse birth outcomes. In this cohort study, we assessed individual maternal exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) during pregnancy and examined the association between the exposure and pregnancy outcomes, such as low birth weight (LBW), term low birth weight (TLBW), small for gestational age (SGA) and preterm birth (PB). 3292 women living in Kaunas city, Lithuania, data and their singleton newborns were included in the study. Exposure to NO2 was assigned to

Nitrogen oxides, released from fossil fuel use and other combustion processes, affect air quality and climate. From the mid-1990s onward, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been monitored from space, and since 2004 with relatively high spatial resolution by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument. Strong upward NO2 trends have been observed over South and East Asia and the Middle East, in particular over major cities. We show, however, that a combination of air quality control and political factors, including economical crisis and armed conflict, has drastically altered the emission landscape of nitrogen oxid

We investigated an outbreak of acute respiratory illness among adolescent ice-hockey players in an indoor ice arena in Stockholm that had a propane-powered ice-resurfacing machine. We administered questionnaires to all players, as well as to a reference group that had played ice hockey in indoor arenas with electric ice-resurfacing machines. In the exposed group, 55 subjects (55.6%) experienced acute respiratory symptoms, compared with 4 (7.1%) in the reference group (relative risk = 7.8; 95% confidence interval = 3.0, 20.3). The risk for pulmonary symptoms increased as time spent on the ice i

The acute pulmonary responses of athletes after short-term exposure to ambient concentrations of NO2 during heavy exercise have been examined. Intercollegiate male athletes were screened for history of cardiac disease, respiratory disease, allergic conditions and extensive exposure to pollutants. After completion of serum IgE level determination, exercise tolerance test and methacholine challenge test with normal results, nine healthy subjects 18 to 23 years of age were exposed to filtered air and to 0.18 and 0.30 ppm NO2 for 30 min on different days while exercising on a treadmill. The mutagenicity in Salmonella, strain TA 100, of photoreaction products from chlorinated alkenes and nitrogen dioxide, was studied after a mean reaction time of 40 min with UV-irradiation and an exposure time of 20 hr. Only vinyl chloride (monochloroethene) gave rise to significantly mutagenic photoreaction products. Of the other chloroethenes, 1,1-dichloroethene and tetrachloroethene, but not 1,2-dichloro- or trichloroethene, formed slightly mutagenic products. Bacteriotoxic effects occurred at low doses, especially with tri- and tetrachloroethene.

In order to investigate the possible formation of mutagenic compounds from alkenes emitted in ambient air, laboratory experiments were performed with Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 in a small-scale flow-through exposure system. The reaction time for mixtures of alkenes with ozone or nitrogen dioxide was 40 minutes, and the exposure time for bacteria was 6 hours. Ozone gave rise to a small mutagenic effect in combination with 1,3-butadiene or vinyl chloride, with and without ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, but not in combination with ethene or propene. Nitrogen dioxide gave rise to a mutagen

Epidemiologic studies support an association among elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), increased respiratory symptoms, and alterations in lung function. To determine if low level NO2 inhalation potentiates exercise-induced bronchospasm, 15 asthmatic subjects, defined by airway constriction with cold air provocation, inhaled 0.30 ppm (560 micrograms/m3) NO2 for 30 min. All asthmatics inhaled either air or 0.30 ppm NO2 via a mouthpiece for 20 min at rest followed by 10 min of exercise on a bicycle ergometer at a workload of 300 kpm/min, producing a 3-fold or greater increase in minute ven

Biomethane is one of the controllable Renewable Energy Sources. It may be derived from biogas, a multicomponent gas mixture, using, among others, membrane processes. The proper optimization of such a process requires the knowledge of the phenomena accompanying each specific biogas-membrane separation system. Therefore, the solubility, permeance and diffusion of CO2, CH4, O2 and N2 in a polyimide-based sample were described and analyzed using the Dual Mode Sorption and partial immobilization models. The parameters of the models were determined based on pure gas sorption isotherms measured gravi

SO2 is a kind of harmful gas produced in the process of many industries. Carbon nanotubes is a widely used adsorbent material. The adsorption and diffusion behavior of equimolar ratio of SO2/N2 mixture gas in single-walled carbon nanotubes is studied by the way of molecular simulation. The results show that at a given temperature, SO2 adsorption capacity increases with the carbon nanotubes' diameter. On the other hand, the N2 adsorption capacity reduces with the diameter increase. For a given diameter, both of the SO2 and N2 adsorption amount reduced with the increase of temperature. The isost

Photocatalytic conversion of methane (CH4) to value-added chemicals using H2O as the oxidant under mild conditions is a desired sustainable pathway for synthesizing commodity chemicals. However, controlling product selectivity while maintaining high product yields is greatly challenging. Herein, we develop a highly efficient strategy, based on the precise control of the types of nitrogen dopants, and the design of photocatalysts, to achieve high selectivity and productivity of oxygenates via CH4 photocatalytic conversion. The primary product (methanol) is obtained in a high yield of 159.8 μmol

Titanium dioxide is the most studied photocatalytic material and has been reported to be active for a wide range of reactions, including the oxidation of hydrocarbons and the reduction of nitrogen. However, the molecular-scale interactions between the titania photocatalyst and dinitrogen are still debated, particularly in the presence of hydrocarbons. Here, we used several spectroscopic and computational techniques to identify interactions among nitrogen, methanol, and titania under illumination. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) allowed us to observe the formation of carbon r

Previous ecological studies suggest the existence of possible interplays between the exposure to air pollutants and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Confirmations at individual level, however, are lacking. To explore the relationships between previous exposure to particulate matter < 10 μm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), the clinical outcome following hospital admittance, and lymphocyte subsets in COVID-19 patients with pneumonia. In 147 geocoded patients, we assessed the individual exposure to PM10 and NO2 in the 2 weeks before hospital admittance. We divided subjects according to the clinical outcom
