OBJECTIVES: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) involves a complex interplay between oxidative stress (OS) and immune dysregulation, yet the precise molecular links involved remain unclear.
METHODS: OS-related genes were obtained from the GeneCards database. Differential expression analysis was performed on mRNA microarray (MA) data to identify OS-associated differentially expressed genes (DEGs). A two-sample Mendelian randomisation analysis was conducted to assess the causal relationships between OS-related genes and AS risk at the protein level. Immune cell mediation was further examined using gene

The complex interaction between nutrition, epigenetics, and epigenomics in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cancer highlights the crucial role of nutrition as an environmental factor influencing gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and regulation through non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). The aim of this review is to explore the importance of interactions between nutrition-epigenetics interactions in the pathogenesis of NCDs and in the development of personalized preve

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key indicator of population health, but its association with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to clarify the association between NCDs and HRQoL in South Korea, focusing on differences by sex, age, and household income. Under Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines, this study examined the association between HRQoL and NCDs using data from Korean adults aged ≥19 years in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2010 and 2023. HRQoL was asses

The growing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) cannot be addressed through clinical interventions alone. Population-level regulatory interventions-such as fiscal measures, marketing restrictions, and labeling regulations-are central to effective NCD prevention and control. This article addresses the role of regulatory policies in preventing NCDs, with a focus on progress and implementation gaps in the Americas. In the context of NCDs, unhealthy commodity industries, including companies that produce and promote tobacco, alcohol, and ultra-processed food products, play a significant role

AIM: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) may exacerbate mental health problems in urban populations. However, the extent to which multimorbidity of NCDs influences depressive symptoms among rural populations is unclear. This study evaluated multimorbidity patterns of NCDs and examined their relationship with depressive symptoms in individuals aged 15 years and older living in rural areas.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study using data from a representative sample of the rural Brazilian population (N = 20,973) were analysed. Latent class analysis was used to identify multimorbidity patterns across ele

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are a rapidly emerging health challenge in low- and middle-income countries, including Bangladesh, where research into their household financial burden remains limited and predominantly descriptive. Existing studies lack robust adjustment for confounders, creating uncertainty about differences in financial outcomes between NCD-affected and non-NCD households. To address this gap, this study uses a quasi-experimental analytic framework and repeated cross-sectional data to estimate adjusted differences in household financial outcomes over time. METHODS

PURPOSE: People with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have a high risk of contracting flu and suffering from its associated complications; however, in many countries flu vaccine uptake in this group is sub-optimal. This survey assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and gaps toward vaccination in general and flu in particular among adults with NCDs in Europe.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The survey was conducted in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, Belgium, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. A structured web-based questionnaire was administered to the subjects.
RESULTS: In total, 1106 subjects were e

Cardiovascular diseases are associated with high morbidity and mortality worldwide and have several risk factors, including dyslipidemia, smoking, and hypertension. Studies have evaluated isolated risk factors in experimental models of cardiovascular disease, but few preclinical studies have assessed associations between multiple risk factors. In the present study, hypertensive Wistar rats (Goldblatt 2K1C model) received a 0.5% cholesterol diet and were exposed to tobacco smoke for 8 weeks. During the last 4 weeks, the animals were treated with vehicle, an ethanol-soluble fraction of B. trimer

Dietary habits are pivotal in preventing chronic noncommunicable diseases, as vegetable-rich diets provide over 25,000 bioactive phytochemicals that modulate cell-signaling and metabolic pathways. Consequently, nutraceuticals and functional foods are increasingly recognized for their potential to prevent chronic pathologies. Among functional foods, Phaseolus vulgaris L. (common bean) stands out as a critical resource for global nutrition and disease prevention. Beyond its role in food security and environmental sustainability, the common bean offers extraordinary nutrient density, providing a

The epithelial barrier theory proposes that modern environmental exposures compromise skin and mucosal surfaces, initiating local inflammation that propagates systemically. The theory integrates epidemiological trends, molecular mechanistic data, and emerging clinical data to show how everyday exposures cause the development and exacerbation of more than 70 chronic noncommunicable diseases. A canonical epithelial cell and barrier injury cascade takes place, generating oxidative stress with increased reactive oxygen species, the release of alarmins, and multiple chemokines and epithelial barrie

The growing financial burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) hinders the attainment of the sustainable development goals. However, there has been no updated synthesis of evidence in this regard. Therefore, our study summarizes the current evidence in the literature and identifies the gaps. We systematically search relevant databases (PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest) between 2015 and 2023, focusing on empirical studies on NCDs and their financial burden indicators, namely, catastrophic health expenditure (CHE), impoverishment, coping strategies, crowding-out effects and

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) place a heavy burden on populations globally and in particular, on lower-income countries (LIC). WHO identified a package of 16 "best buy" lifestyle and management interventions that are cost-effective and applicable in all settings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare NCD risk factors in all WHO countries and make preliminary assessment of "best buy" interventions.
METHODS: Risk factors estimation was made in 188 countries. NCD attributable "best buys" concern tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and harmful use of al

Falsified and substandard medicines may undermine the progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. The present study investigated the quality of 13 essential medicines in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). Five hundred six medicine samples were collected from the government and faith-based health facilities, private pharmacies, and informal vendors (total 60 facilities). Collected samples were analyzed according to the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) for identity, content, and dissolution of their active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and for uniformity of dosage units.
