Although clinical observations suggest that alexithymic individuals have a deficit in their ability to recognize emotional stimuli and that this deficit is not simply due to a problem in verbal labeling, these two hypotheses have not been empirically confirmed. Three hundred eighty participants in a community survey without current or past histories of psychiatric disorder completed two independent measures of alexithymia [the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20)] and the Perception of Affect Task (PAT), a 140-item measure of the ability to matc

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal communication skills as part of the supportive care in cancer won new dimensions by demonstrating the association with enhanced ability of patients to cope with the disease, to enhance trust in health care providers, compliance with treatment and to reduce emotional distress and psychosocial burden. Besides empathy the effective patient centered communication is based upon perceptual and behavioral skills of caregivers. Doctors, nurses, and oncology social workers have to achieve skills to listen to patients complains and to respond to his/ her support needs. The aim

This review underlines the importance of non-verbal communication in Alzheimer's disease. A social psychological perspective of communication is privileged. Non-verbal behaviors such as looks, head nods, hand gestures, body posture or facial expression provide a lot of information about interpersonal attitudes, behavioral intentions, and emotional experiences. Therefore they play an important role in the regulation of interaction between individuals. Non-verbal communication is effective in Alzheimer's disease even in the late stages. Patients still produce non-verbal signals and are responsiv

People are capable of using simple perceptual features such as color to signify complex meanings (perceptual semantics), an important aspect of nonverbal communication. This paper considers the nature and structure of the mental representations that support these abilities, using color semantics as a key example. Prior work has shown that people can judge the strength of association between essentially any color and any concept. Across four experiments we show that such associations express a low-rank conceptual space, color semantic space, whose dimensions can be well-characterized using colo

From early in life, social interactions rely on a rich exchange of nonverbal information. This review paper focuses on the nonverbal, kinematic information conveyed by how social partners move and proposes that such movement modulations may facilitate interpersonal coordination between infants and adults, as well as support infants' learning in early interactions. So far, findings on movement modulations have been investigated in isolation: sensorimotor communication in interpersonal coordination between adults (signaling) on the one hand, and in early teaching interactions between adults and

Non-verbal communication is the basis of animal interactions. In dyadic leader-follower interactions, leaders master the ability to carve their motor behaviour in order to 'signal' their future actions and internal plans while these signals influence the behaviour of follower partners, who automatically tend to imitate the leader even in complementary interactions. Despite their usefulness, signalling and imitation have a biomechanical cost, and it is unclear how this cost-benefits trade-off is managed during repetitive dyadic interactions that present learnable regularities. We studied signal

Dyadic free play of 32 children (16 deaf, 16 hearing) who attended the same preschool was videotaped on 2 occasions, once with a hearing partner and once with a deaf partner. Each 15-min play session was analyzed in terms of the hearing and deaf children's initiation strategies, their responsiveness to one another's initiations, and the characteristics of successful and unsuccessful initiations. Results indicated that mean interaction duration and proportion of time spent in interaction were greater in "like" (hearing child and hearing partner or deaf child and deaf partner) as opposed to "mix

Consent is a critical component of healthy and pleasurable sexual experiences. Individual-level (e.g. gender) and situational-level (e.g. type of sexual behavior, relationship to partner) factors have been associated with sexual consent communication. However, few studies have examined a broad range of personal and situational characteristics within the same models, despite these being potentially important influences on sexual behavior during college. The current study extended prior work by examining multiple correlates of consent communication during individuals' most recent sexual encounte

OBJECTIVES: This study examined how nonverbal empathy affects perceptions of therapists' competence and warmth. It also looked at the influence of the Big Five, self-rated empathy, and secure attachment, on these perceptions.
METHOD: A between-subjects online randomized controlled trial involved 257 participants (average age 41.57 years, with 66.1% identifying as female), who were randomly assigned to view one of two video clips. These videos depicted a therapist demonstrating either high (E + ) or low (E-) nonverbal empathy during a simulated therapy session. Nonverbal empathy was conveyed t

In this commentary, we argue that the limited experiential exposure of medical students to different cultures makes the instruction devoted to communication skills inadequate. The relationship of these dynamics to honesty in clinical encounters is explored. Absent significant experiential exposure to differing group cultures to counter the natural tendency to favor one's own, discrimination prevails. Knowledge or awareness of cultural differences does not necessarily equate to communication proficiency. Critically, interactions based on lived experience offer a deeper knowledge and understandi

We studied the gestures used by children with classic Rett syndrome (RTT) to provide evidence as to how this essential aspect of communicative functions develops. Seven participants with RTT were longitudinally observed between 9 and 18 months of life. The gestures used by these participants were transcribed and coded from a retrospective analysis of a video footage. Gestures were classified as deictic gestures, play schemes, and representational gestures. Results of the analysis showed that the majority of gestures observed were of deictic character. There were no gestures that could be class

BACKGROUND: The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a popular augmentative communication system frequently used with 'nonverbal' children with autism. Several studies suggested that PECS could represent an effective tool for promoting improvement of several social-communicative skills. Only sparse evidence is instead available on the long-term effectiveness of this treatment system.
AIMS: To test the long-term effects of PECS, for which a follow-up study was conducted by assessing social-communicative skills in nonverbal preschool children with autism after 12 months from treatmen

BACKGROUND: Pain management in critically ill patients with brain injury is a clinical and ethical concern in critical care settings that is complicated by altered consciousness and communication barriers.
AIM: To identify, synthesise and categorise methods for effective pain assessment in critically ill, non-verbal patients with brain injury in critical care settings.
DESIGN: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines, registered in PROSPERO, included 13 articles that examined pain among those patients.
RESULTS: Validated assessment tools, such as the Critical Care Pain Observation To

Nonverbal signals color the meanings of interpersonal relationships. Humans rely on facial, head, postural, and vocal signals to express relational messages along continua. Three of relevance are dominance-submission, composure-nervousness and trust-distrust. Machine learning and new automated analysis tools are making possible a deeper understanding of the dynamics of relational communication. These are explored in the context of group interactions during a game entailing deception. The "messiness" of studying communication under naturalistic conditions creates many measurement and design obs

It has been well established that pre-lingually hearing-impaired children experience difficulties in speech development. Little appears in the literature, however, about speech development in aphonic children. The authors have had the opportunity to manage several children who, for various reasons, were unable to phonate from a pre-lingual age to approximately the age of 5 or 6 years. The children in this report developed various compensatory means of communication, including unusual laryngeal, non-laryngeal and nonverbal communication. Representative cases are reviewed and observations are ma

Children have been shown to generalize information acquired from social partners better when it is provided to them in a communicative manner. Two distinct learning mechanisms have been proposed to explain how communicative demonstrations assist the acquisition of generic knowledge in infants: by strengthening or speeding up inductive generalization processes (Boosted Induction), or by providing a direct generic statement in a nonverbal form (Nonverbal Generics), which makes additional generalization processes unnecessary. We sought to adjudicate between these accounts by exploring how childre

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a form of high-functioning autism characterized by qualitative impairment in social interaction. People afflicted with AS typically have abnormal nonverbal behaviors which are often manifested by avoiding eye contact. Gaze constitutes an important interactional resource, and an AS person's tendency to avoid eye contact may affect the fluidity of conversations and cause misunderstandings. For this reason, it is important to know the precise ways in which this avoidance is done, and in what ways it affects the interaction. The objective of this article is to describe th
