Adult systemic Epstein-Barr virus-positive T-cell lymphoproliferative disease: A case report.

Systemic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive T-cell lymphoproliferative disease (EBV+ T-LPD) occurs mainly in Asia and South America and is extremely rare in adults. The disease is characterized by a clonal proliferation of EBV-infected T cells with a cytotoxic immunophenotype and is associated with a poor clinical outcome and can be life-threatening. The majority of the patients have evidence of systemic disease, often with lymph node, liver and spleen involvement. The present study describes a case of adult systemic EBV+ T-LPD with high fever, systemic lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, nose

Solitary fibrous tumor of the auditory canal.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm of increasing incidence that was originally described to be of pleural origin; however, more recently, SFT has been reported in extrapleural sites, including the orbit, liver, salivary glands, tongue, nose, paranasal sinuses, larynx, retroperitoneum, meninges, and thyroid. The increase in the number of SFTs does not necessarily mean increased incidence of this tumor but rather an increased understanding of this tumor, especially recognition of this tumor in extrapleural locations, which has been aided by immunohistochemical anal

Primary tumors and tumor-like lesions of the eustachian tube: a systematic review of an emerging entity.

Eustachian tube (ET) primary tumors and tumor-like lesions are rare diseases presenting with common ear, nose and throat symptoms. Pathology can range from developmental anomalies to high malignant neoplasms. Hence this review aimed at suggesting a classification and outline relevant aspects of ET primary tumors and tumor-like lesions, describing clinical findings, diagnostic management and therapeutic approaches. MEDLINE, CINAHL, OVIDSP, HIGHWIRE, and GOOGLE databases were searched from inception to July 2011 for relevant studies. Further papers were identified by examining the reference list

Nasal polyps - histopathologic spectrum.

Analysis of 345 polypoidal masses in nose and nasal sinuses with clinical diagnosis of nasal polyp, observed in 10 years, revealed 175 (50.7%) non- neoplastic lesions and 170 (49.3%) neoplasms. Among the non- neoplastic lesions, there were 110 cases (62.8%) of true nasal polyps including 74 cases (67.3%) of allergic polyps and 36 (32.7%) inflammatory ones. The next common non- neoplastic polyp was due to rhinosporidiosis (31.4%). Benign neoplastic lesions consisted mainly of haemangioma (45.7%), angiofibroma (23.2%), fibroma (6.2%), transitional cell papilloma, inverted papilloma, adenoma-3.9%

Diffuse lipomatosis of the thyroid and thyroid papillary carcinoma, lipomatous type: A case report.

Diffuse lipomatosis, characterized by the widespread presence of mature adipose tissue within the thyroid, is a rare condition. The presence of adipose tissue may vary within the neoplastic nodules in cases of diffuselipomatosis. Although the etiology remains unclear, it is generally regarded as an embryological developmental anomaly. This case report presents a 68-year-old female patient presented to the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) clinic with complaints of neck swelling. Ultrasonographic examination revealed an enlarged thyroid gland and a 2 cm nodule. The patient subsequently underwent the

Malignant neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses involving the skin.

Malignant neoplasms of the mucosa and minor salivary glands of the paranasal sinuses may involve the skin by direct extension. When a tumor appears on the overlying skin, these sinuses should be considered as a possible site of origin. Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses arise from minor salivary glands. They can infiltrate overlying skin and easily be confused with a primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma. Malignant melanomas of the paranasal sinuses are clinically very aggressive. They are often amelanotic, and this may lead to an incorrect histopathologic diagnosis. Hence,

Giant central ossifying fibroma of the maxilla presenting with a pus discharging intra-oral sinus.

Central ossifying fibroma (COF) is a rare benign fibro-osseous neoplasm which has a predilection for mandible and is encountered in middle aged women. It arises from mesenchymal blast cells of the periodontal ligament, and with a potential to form fibrous tissue, cementum and bone. It is a well circumscribed lesion mainly comprising of fibrous tissue with varying amounts of bone or cementum or osteo-cementum like tissue. We present an uncommon case of COF of the maxilla in a 35-year-old male who presented with a pus discharging sinus in the maxilla. Due to the bizarre size of the lesion we hav

[Favre-Racouchot syndrome: case report].

The authors present a case of Favre-Racouchot syndrome (elastoidosis nodularis cystica et comedonica) in a male mason aged 65, associated with nodular-ulcerative type of basocellular skin neoplasm and seboroic keratosis of the irritative type. A special reference is given to nodular cystic elastoidosis (NCE) with concurrent numerous skin changes characteristic for chronic actinic skin lesions which were clinically evidenced. An objective examination of the patient revealed the presence of multiple follicular comedones, black in colour, the size of a pinhead, and of yellowish follicular papulas

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: A Case Image.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare benign neoplasm that can be mistaken for malignancies due to its unfamiliarity among clinicians and aggressive clinical appearance. We herein contributed by reporting an additional case of MNTI characterized by an extensive extraoral protrusion in a 2-month-old infant. The lesion involved the anterior maxilla, cheek, and infraorbital region, resulting the displacement of the nose to the contralateral side, and measuring approximately 10 cm in size. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed. After a 6-month follow-up, the patient

Esthesioneuroblastoma: Summary of Single-center Experiences with Focus on Adjuvant Therapy and Overall Survival.

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is a rare malignant tumor of the nasal cavity. The genetic basis of its development is still under study and has not been fully delineated. It has varying symptoms depending on the lesion's location within the nasal cavity. The most commonly used systems for such lesions are the Kadish staging and Haymes grading systems. The objectives are to review the most recent published literature evaluating the different treatments/ combination of treatment and assess the most appropriate treatment modality that can provide the longest progression-free survival and overall sur

Usefulness of chromosome examination in the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusions.

To determine whether chromosome analysis could facilitate the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusions, we examined chromosomes in effusions from 104 unselected patients. An effusion was regarded as malignant if at least three of 30 metaphase cells were hyperdiploid or contained a marker chromosome. Results were compared with standard cytologic diagnoses. All 22 benign effusions were diagnosed correctly by cytologic examination, but one nosed correctly by cytologic examination, but one (acute rheumatoid lung disease) was misclassified as positive by chromosome criteria. Of the 82 malignant eff

Management of sinonasal hemangiopericytomas: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hemangiopericytomas are typically found in soft-tissue, but only rarely found in the sinonasal tract. Sinonasal hemangiopericytomas have been reported mostly through case studies, and optimal treatment is considered surgical excision. Classically, open surgical methods of tumor extirpation have been considered standard of care. With the wider use of endoscopic methods, an updated systematic review in terms of treatment is warranted. METHODS: Cases were identified using a MEDLINE and PubMed search. Relevant studies were identified, and data was extracted regarding patient demograph

Fibrolipoma of nasal tip: a patient with bulbous tip deformity.

Bulbous tip deformity of the nose is one of the common nasal tip deformities. In general, it is thought to occur due to an increased tip volume which alters the tip dynamics. Rarely does any tumour arising from the nasal tip produce a voluminous tip. Fibrolipoma is a rare variety of lipoma that can occur at the nasal tip and it can be suspected clinically during palpation of the nasal tip due to its altered consistency. While traditionally, removal of excess soft tissue overlying lower lateral cartilages and cephalic trimming followed by tip-defining sutures are the key steps to correct any bu

Nasal reconstruction in children.

The nose represents the center of the face. The nasal shape changes with the progression from infancy to adulthood. In newborns, the main supporting structure of the nose is the dorsal septal cartilage; it is the facial growth center. The loss of septal cartilage at different ages leads to various facial syndromes involving the nose, maxilla, and orbita. Therefore, every surgical treatment can compromise not only the nasal growth but also the growth of the whole face. Childhood trauma or a malformation of the nose can also cause enormous functional impairments similar to those caused by surgic

[Eccrine porocarcinoma of the nose with cervical metastasis:a case report].

An 18-year-old man presented with a slow-growing, painful mass on the nasal dorsum that first appeared 4 years earlier. Clinical examination revealed a 5 cm×6 cm, claret-coloured, firm, nonmobile mass on the dorsum of the nose with superficial ulceration and purulent discharge. After several operations, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, no nasal recurrence was found, but recurrence of metastatic masses in the neck. Histopathologic examination showed that the neoplasms were solid nests with adenoid and squamous differentiation. Immunohistochemical result showed that EMA(-), CEA(-), p16(+), p53(+),
