Study of Nuclear Effects on Charm Production in Light-Ion Collisions.

The onset of nuclear effects in light-ion collisions is studied by measuring the ratio of D^{0} meson production between NeNe and OO collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.36 TeV recorded by the LHCb detector. The D^{0} meson yields are measured differentially in transverse momentum (p_{T}) for 0.5<p_{T}<20  GeV in the rapidity (y) region 2.0<y<4.5, and are normalized to the total number of recorded inelastic nucleus-nucleus collisions in each data sample. The resulting production ratio shows evidence of variation as a function of p_{T}, which is inconsistent with predicti

Alchemical geometry relaxation.

We propose the relaxation of geometries throughout chemical compound space using alchemical perturbation density functional theory (APDFT). APDFT refers to perturbation theory involving changes in nuclear charges within approximate solutions to Schrödinger's equation. We give an analytical formula to calculate the mixed second order energy derivatives with respect to both nuclear charges and nuclear positions (named "alchemical force") within the restricted Hartree-Fock case. We have implemented and studied the formula for its use in geometry relaxation of various reference and target molecule

Analysis by kinetic modeling of the temperature dependence of thermal electron attachment to CF3Br.

Experimental data from the literature for cross sections and rate constants for dissociative electron attachment to CF(3)Br, with separately varied electron and gas temperatures, are analyzed by a kinetic modeling approach. The analysis suggests that electronic and nuclear contributions to the rate constants can be roughly separated, the former leading to a negative temperature coefficient, the latter to a positive temperature coefficient. The nuclear factor in the rate constant is found to be of Arrhenius form with an activation energy which is close to the energy of crossing of the CF(3)Br a

Mice and the reactor: the "genetics experiment" in 1950s Britain.

The postwar investments by several governments into the development of atomic energy for military and peaceful uses fuelled the fears not only of the exposure to acute doses of radiation as could be expected from nuclear accidents or atomic warfare but also of the long-term effects of low-dose exposure to radiation. Following similar studies pursued under the aegis of the Manhattan Project in the United States, the "genetics experiment" discussed by scientists and government officials in Britain soon after the war, consisted in large-scale low-dose irradiation experiments of laboratory animals

The Radium Terrors. Science Fiction and Radioactivity before the Bomb.

At the beginning of the 20th century the collective imagination was fascinated and terrified by the discovery of radium. A scientific imagery sprang up around radioactivity and was disseminated by public lectures and newspaper articles discussing the ambiguous power of this strange substance. It was claimed that radium could be used to treat cholera, typhus and tuberculosis, but at the same time there were warnings that it could be used for military purposes. The media and the scientists themselves employed a rich vocabulary influenced by religion, alchemy and magic. The ambivalent power of ra

Importance of Nuclear Quantum Effects for NMR Crystallography.

The resolving power of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) crystallography depends heavily on the accuracy of computational predictions of NMR chemical shieldings of candidate structures, which are usually taken to be local minima in the potential energy. To test the limits of this approximation, we systematically study the importance of finite-temperature and quantum nuclear fluctuations for 1H, 13C, and 15N shieldings in polymorphs of three paradigmatic molecular crystals: benzene, glycine, and succinic acid. The effect of quantum fluctuations is comparable to the typical errors of

Linking bioenergetics and radiation dose in Chornobyl rodents.

High metabolic rate may provide fitness benefits for individuals. But high metabolic rates incur energetic costs and the need to ingest more food, increasing the risks of ingesting harmful substances from the environment. How organisms respond to elevated ionizing radiation is an important question in the light of pollution from nuclear accidents and waste, and reliance on radiation for medical treatments. Within and around the Chornobyl exclusion zone, we investigated how the bioenergetics of wild rodents inhabiting a gradient of radioactive contamination from 'clean' (<15.4 μGy day-1) to con

A variational model for the hyperfine resolved spectrum of VO in its ground electronic state.

A variational model for the infra-red spectrum of vanadium monoxide (VO) is presented, which aims to accurately predict the hyperfine structure within the VO XΣ-4 electronic ground state. To give the correct electron spin splitting of the XΣ-4 state, electron spin dipolar interaction within the ground state and the spin-orbit coupling between XΣ-4 and two excited states, AΠ4 and 1Σ+2, are calculated ab initio alongside hyperfine interaction terms. Four hyperfine coupling terms are explicitly considered: Fermi-contact interaction, electron spin-nuclear spin dipolar interaction, nuclear spin-rot

The mitochondrial biogenesis signaling pathway is a potential therapeutic target for myasthenia gravis via energy metabolism (Review).

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoantibody-mediated autoimmune disease that is characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. Traditional treatments for MG target the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) or the immune system. However, the efficacy of such treatments is limited, and novel therapeutic options for MG are urgently required. In the current review, a new therapeutic strategy is proposed based on the mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism pathway, as stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis and the energy metabolism might alleviate myasthenia gravis. A number of cellular sensors of the ene

Nuclear Cogeneration of Methanol and Acetaldehyde from Ethylene Glycol Using Ionizing Radiation.

Despite offering low-carbon and reliable energy, the utilization of nuclear energy is declining globally due to high upfront capital costs and longer returns on investments. Nuclear cogeneration of valuable chemicals from waste biomass-derived feedstocks could have beneficial impacts while harnessing the underutilized resource of ionizing energy. Here, we demonstrate selective methanol or acetaldehyde production from ethylene glycol, a feedstock derived from glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel, using irradiations from a nuclear fission reactor. The influence of radiation quality, dose rate, and

Nuclear translocation of cytosolic phospholipase A2 is induced by ATP depletion.

Phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) enzymes may play a role in cellular injury due to ATP depletion. Renal Madin-Darby canine kidney cells were subjected to ATP depletion to assess the effects of cellular energy metabolism on cytosolic PLA(2) (cPLA(2)) regulation. ATP depletion results in a decrease in soluble cPLA(2) activity and an increase in membrane-associated activity, which is reversed upon restoration of ATP levels by addition of dextrose. In ATP-depleted cells cPLA(2) mass shifts from cytosol to nuclear fractions. GFP-cPLA(2) is localized at the nuclear membrane of stably transfected ATP-depl

The effects of nuclear DNA mutations on mitochondrial function.

The multiple functions of mitochondria, including adenosine triphosphate synthesis, are controlled by the coordination of both the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the nuclear DNA (nDNA) genomes. Mitochondrial disorders manifest because of impairment of energy metabolism. This article focuses on mutations in two nuclear genes and their effect on mitochondrial function. Mutations in the polymerase gamma, or POLG, gene are associated with multisystemic disease processes, including Alpers Syndrome, a severe childhood-onset syndrome. Mutations in the OPA1 gene are associated with autosomal dominant o

MeV TOF SIMS Analysis of Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Compounds in the Low Energy Region.

The low energy range (a few 100 keV to a few megaelectronvolts) primary ion mode in MeV secondary ion mass spectrometry (MeV SIMS) and its potential in exploiting the capabilities of conventional (keV) SIMS and MeV SIMS simultaneously were investigated. The aim is to see if in this energy range of both types of materials, inorganic and organic, can be simultaneously analyzed. A feasibility study was conducted, first by analyzing the dependence of secondary ion yields in indium tin oxide (ITO, In2O5Sn) and leucine (C6H13NO2) on various primary ion energies and charge states of a Cu beam, within

Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy in the Condensed Phase Using Equivariant Transformer Accelerated Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) provides rich information about how the electronic states of molecules, proteins, and solid-state materials interact with each other and their surrounding environment. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations offer an appealing route to uncover how nuclear motions mediate electronic energy relaxation and their manifestation in electronic spectroscopies but are computationally expensive. Here we show that by using an equivariant transformer-based machine learning architecture trained with only 2500 ground state and 100 excited state electronic stru

From Nuclear Receptor Regulation to Spleen Activating and Accumulation Resolving Therapy: A Review of Traditional Chinese Medicine Against Diabetes and Inflammation.

Nuclear receptors are proteins located in the nucleus that are involved in gene transcription and play an important role in regulating metabolism and inflammation. Systemic metabolic abnormalities and chronic inflammation in diabetic patients are associated with gene expression and activity of bile acid metabolism, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, energy expenditure, and inflammation regulated by nuclear receptors. As a major metabolic organ, the nuclear receptor regulation signal of the liver is the key to regulating the dialog between the liver and other organs. In this review, we discuss

The role of mitochondrial-related nuclear genes in age-related common disease.

Mitochondria are critical organelles that provide energy as ATP to the cell. Besides 37 genes encoded by mitochondrial genome, it has been estimated that over 1500 nuclear genes are required for mitochondrial structure and function. Thus, mutations of many genes in the nuclear genome cause dysfunction of mitochondria that can lead to many severe conditions. Mitochondrial dysfunction often results in reduced ATP synthesis, higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), imbalanced mitochondrial dynamics, and other detrimental effects. In addition to rare primary mitochondrial disorders, these m

Selecting a spectrometric detector for drinking water monitoring in the case of nuclear and radiological emergencies.

Rapid and reliable radionuclide-specific monitoring of drinking water may be required following a radiological or nuclear (RN) emergency. In this study, ten gamma-detector configurations were evaluated for continuous drinking-water monitoring using Monte Carlo simulations combined with measured detector backgrounds. Two source terms were investigated, representing fallout from a nuclear weapon detonation and a nuclear power plant accident, each at 48 h and 7 d after release. Two measurement geometries were simulated: a 4 L Marinelli beaker and a shielded detector positioned directly against a

Environmental radiological impacts of the nuclear industry from mining to construction, operation, and decommissioning of a power station.

The nuclear industry has had a good track record of progressively reducing occupational, public, and environmental exposures across the nuclear fuel cycle through the practical implementation of the as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principle. Worker and public doses remain low, and environmental impacts are being better understood, although the environmental impacts continue to be low. However, more recently, the industry is concerned that there is pressure to continue to reduce exposures despite there being no justifiable reason. This is often because of radiation being considered in i

Non-adiabatic effects induced by strong light-matter coupling in cavity QED.

We present a systematic study of the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction (DBOC) for atoms and molecules embedded in optical cavities and interacting with a quantized electromagnetic field. By explicitly evaluating the nuclear kinetic energy operator, we analyze cavity-induced modifications of DBOC within a quantum electrodynamics configuration-interaction framework built on quantum electrodynamics Hartree-Fock (QED-HF) and strong-coupling quantum electrodynamics Hartree-Fock (SC-QED-HF) reference states. The analysis covers a diverse set of atomic and molecular systems, including He, H-, Be,
