Variations in the number of silver-stained nucleolar organizer region-associated proteins (AgNORs) were studied in paraffin sections of 42 benign prostatic lesions, comprising four cases of granulomatous prostatitis, five of squamous or transitional metaplasia, eight of atypical and 25 of regular hyperplasia, and 37 of prostatic adenocarcinoma, with their metastases. By means of a standardized silver staining technique, nucleolar organizer region-associated proteins (AgNORs) have been demonstrated in paraffin sections of 41 astrocytomas and glioblastomas and 19 meningiomas. Computer-assisted image analysis was used to measure AgNORs together with other nuclear features. Significant differences in number and configuration of AgNORs have been found between non-anaplastic astrocytomas and anaplastic gliomata. In meningiomas, tumours with signs of increased proliferative activity and usual non-anaplastic ones could be discriminated using AgNOR data.

Paraffin sections of 305 meningeal tumours were analysed for the presence of nucleolar organizer region (Ag-NOR) in the neoplastic cells, using a one step silver-colloidal staining method. The mean (+/- SEM) Ag-NOR counts were 2.73 +/- 0.21 for atypical and 2.91 +/- 0.18 for papillary variants of meningioma. This study investigated the role of duodenogastric reflux in rats after antecolic gastrojejunostomy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic value of AgNOR counts in cervical smears in the process of cervical carcinogenesis and in discriminating the different grades of squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL).
STUDY DESIGN: Silver nitrate staining for AgNOR counts was performed in 50 cervical smears of cytologically diagnosed normal, inflammatory, low grade SIL (LSIL) (mild dysplasia), high grade SIL (HSIL) (moderate and severe dysplasia) and squamous cell carcinoma. The smears were derived from the ongoing routine outpatient cytology screening at Queen Mary's Hospital, Lucknow, India.
