BACKGROUND: Vasoactive agents are commonly infused via a central venous catheter (CVC) because of concerns about extravasation. However, recent studies suggested that peripheral administration carries a low risk of extravasation, with minimal morbidity, when delivered under a protocol. Peripheral vasoactive agents can potentially facilitate early haemodynamic support and reduce CVC insertion and associated complications. We developed and implemented a multidisciplinary, nurse-led protocol with the aims of minimising extravasation events and avoiding unnecessary CVC placement.

BACKGROUND: Timely administration of adrenaline during in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) with non-shockable rhythms is recommended, yet delays are common when drug administration depends on physician authorisation.
AIM: To evaluate whether empowering nurses to administer the first dose of adrenaline could reduce delays and improve outcomes.
METHODS: In this study of prospectively collected registry data, the primary outcome of time to first dose of adrenaline in IHCA events with non-shockable rhythms (asystole/pulseless electrical activity) was compared between the pre-intervention phase (Se

Tofersen is an antisense oligonucleotide administered intrathecally for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) caused by pathogenic variants in the superoxide dismutase 1 gene. Delivering intrathecal treatments required for ongoing therapy poses logistical challenges for multidisciplinary clinics. We describe our experience establishing an efficient Canadian nurse practitioner-and neurologist-led intrathecal therapeutics clinic model, with standardized procedures and multidisciplinary monitoring. This collaborative approach has enabled efficient monthly delivery of tofersen within existing clinic

Stock inhalers are unassigned rescue inhalers available for students who experience asthma symptoms at school. This study sought to understand school nurse and administrator perspectives on school-based asthma management and stock inhaler policy implementation. Twenty-three semistructured interviews were conducted with professionals from five high asthma burdened counties in varied geographic settings. Thematic analysis revealed three themes. "School-Based Asthma Management" revealed concerns about management methods of asthma and respiratory emergencies, and incident tracking. "Access to a Su

Although efficacy and safety of nonanesthesiologist administration of propofol and nurse-administered propofol sedation practices have been amply demonstrated in patients at low American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status risk, they are still severely limited. To date, it is quite difficult to find a protocol or a shared training program. The aim of the study was to verify requirements, types of training, and operating methods described in the literature for the administration of propofol by a nurse. A scoping review of the literature was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR g

BACKGROUND: Urinary catheters are useful among hospital patients for allowing urinary flows and preparing patients for surgery. However, urinary infections associated with catheters cause significant patient discomfort and burden hospital resources. A nurse led intervention aiming to reduce inpatient catheterisation rates was recently trialled among adult overnight patients in four New South Wales hospitals. It included: 'train-the trainer' workshops, site champions, compliance audits and promotional materials. This study is the 'in-trial' cost-effectiveness analysis, conducted from the perspe

BACKGROUND: Intravenous medication administration is a high-risk clinical procedure, where medication errors can lead to adverse consequences. Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines provide recommendations for the administration and monitoring of intravenous infusions. These guidelines are being increasingly integrated into clinical decision support systems (CDSS). The development of CDSS should emphasize nurses as core users, closely align with their clinical workflows, and ultimately create practical, user-friendly tools through thoughtful interface design, functional logic, and intelli

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is prevalent among surgical patients, causing hospitalizations, extended stays, and patient dissatisfaction. Children are twice as likely to experience PONV than adult patients. Complementary therapy holds promise for PONV treatment but meets clinical use barriers. We explored perioperative nurses' perceived barriers to the use of complementary aromatherapy.
METHOD: Presurvey and postsurveys assessed nurses' (n = 27) knowledge and barriers to aromatherapy use before and after an educational in-service.
RESULTS: Primary PONV treatment inv

BACKGROUND: A growing number of older people are care dependent and live in nursing homes, which accounts for the majority of long-term-care spending. Specific medical conditions and resident characteristics may serve as risk factors predicting negative health outcomes. We investigated the association between the risk of increasing care need and chronic medical conditions among nursing home residents, allowing for the competing risk of mortality.
METHODS: In this retrospective longitudinal study based on health insurance claims data, we investigated 20,485 older adults (≥65 years) admitted to
