Basic neonatal resuscitation skills of midwives and nurses in Eastern Ethiopia are not well retained: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal resuscitation is a life-saving intervention for birth asphyxia, a leading cause of neonatal mortality. Worldwide, four million neonate deaths happen annually, and birth asphyxia accounts for one million deaths. Improving providers' neonatal resuscitation skills is critical for delivering quality care and for morbidity and mortality reduction. However, retention of these skills has been challenging in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess neonatal resuscitation skills retention and associated factors among midwives and nurses in Eastern

Psychological capital, well-being, and patient safety attitudes of nurses and midwives: A cross-sectional survey.

Nursing and midwifery are unarguably stressful endeavors requiring high levels of psychological capital and coping strategies. The impact of the work environment on patient safety outcomes suggests that high nurse/midwife stress may be associated with more adverse patient events. The purpose of this study was to explore the psychological capital of clinical nurses and midwives and identify explanatory factors (including psychological capital, well-being, and health-related behaviors) contributing to attitudes to patient safety. A descriptive web- and paper-based survey comprising a convenience

Career mobility of maternal care providers in Mali: a mixed method study on midwives and obstetric nurses.

BACKGROUND: An important strategy to reduce maternal and child mortality in Mali is to increase the number of deliveries assisted by qualified personnel in primary care facilities, especially in rural areas. However, placements and retention of healthcare professionals in rural areas are a major problem, not only in Mali but worldwide, and are a challenge to the health sector. The purpose of this study was to map the mobility of midwives and obstetric nurses during their work lives, in order to better understand their career paths and the role that working in rural areas plays. Efficacy of an ultrasound training program for nurse midwives to assess high-risk conditions at labor triage in rural Uganda.

Many high-risk conditions of pregnancy are undetected until the time of delivery in low-income countries. We developed a point-of-care ultrasound training protocol for providers in rural Uganda to detect fetal distress or demise, malpresentation, multiple gestation, placenta previa, oligohydramnios and preterm delivery. This was a mixed-methods study to evaluate the 2-week training curriculum and trainees' ability to perform a standard scanning protocol and interpret ultrasound images. Surveys to assess provider confidence were administered pre-training, immediately after, and at 3-month follo

Short report: Limited effectiveness of screening mammography in addition to clinical breast examination by trained nurse midwives in rural Jakarta, Indonesia.

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are undergoing an increase in incidence of breast cancer, but have inadequate resources to implement mammographic screening. Clinical breast examination (CBE) has been suggested as an alternative to mammography in these settings. We compared the results of CBE screening by 47 midwives and 15 trained lay health workers to results of independently performed mammographic screening in an unscreened population of 1,179 women in Jakarta, Indonesia. Two hundred and eight-nine (24.5%) of the screened women had a suspicious finding on CBE and/or mammography. Six

Knowledge of female genital cutting and experience with women who are circumcised: a survey of nurse-midwives in the United States.

Thousands of women with a history of female genital cutting (FGC) have immigrated to the United States. The purpose of this study was to assess certified nurse-midwives' (CNMs') knowledge of FGC and to explore their experiences caring for African immigrant women with a history of genital cutting. A descriptive survey design was used. A random sample of 600 CNMs from the member list of the American College of Nurse-Midwives was surveyed. Two hundred forty-three CNMs completed a survey of FGC knowledge and provider experience. The respondents exhibited more correct medical knowledge about FGC th

A national survey of herbal preparation use by nurse-midwives for labor stimulation. Review of the literature and recommendations for practice.

To document the use of herbal preparations for cervical ripening, induction, and augmentation of labor by certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and nurse-midwifery education programs, a national survey of 500 members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives was conducted. Forty eight nurse-midwifery education programs were also surveyed to determine whether they were formally or informally educating students in the use of herbal preparations for cervical ripening, induction, or augmentation of labor. The results of this study, a review of the literature, professional issues, and recommendations for

Communication Strategies Within the Mental Health Context-The Evidence for Nurses, Midwives, and Social Workers. A Rapid Review.

Effective communication in mental health settings is central to compassionate, ethical, and person-centred care. For nurses, midwives, and social workers, communication underpins trust, assessment accuracy, and recovery-oriented practice. This rapid review explored evidence-based communication strategies used by these disciplines within adult mental health contexts. Following PRISMA-ScR and JBI methodology, 18 studies published between 2015 and 2025 were analysed. Study quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Assessment Tool. Three overarching themes emerged: professional mechanisms (refl

Exploring the perceptions, experiences, and behaviours that nurses and midwives face in relation to sleep: A systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: The importance of sleep for nurses and midwives is increasingly being recognised. Poor sleep is known to have negative impacts on physical health, mental wellbeing, and work performance. This has prompted efforts to promote and support staff sleep. However, further efforts are needed to understand how nurses and midwives consider and manage sleep to ensure that meaningful and effective interventions are adopted and sustained. AIMS: This review of qualitative evidence aims to examine nurses' and midwives' perceptions, experiences, and behaviours around sleep. METHODS: This review

Visualization of Midwives' Professional Work Time a Comparative Analysis Between Obstetric Internal Medicine and Surgical Nursing.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing specialization, the domain-level structure of nurses' and midwives' daily activities remains under-characterized, and few studies compare obstetric with general wards using a single 37-subcategory taxonomy. In Japan, census- and acuity-based staffing under the Medical Care Act/DPC-PDPS captures headcount but underrepresents indirect care such as documentation and coordination. Quantifying domain-level time is therefore needed to align ward staffing with actual workload. We aimed to quantify obstetric midwives' day-shift work time using the JNA 37 - subcategory frame

Impact of Effort-Reward Imbalance and Burnout on the Compliance with Standard Precautions among Nurses and Midwives in Lebanese Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) refers to the situation where there is a mismatch between the effort that healthcare workers (HCWs) put into their work and the rewards they receive in return. Burnout, on the other hand, is a psychological syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. This study aimed to assess the impact of ERI and burnout on the compliance with standard precautions (SPs) among nurses and midwives in Lebanese hospitals under the economic crisis and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Cross-sectional correla

Midwives' and Diabetes Nurses' Experience of Screening and Care of Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing and is associated with adverse outcomes for both mother and child. The metabolic demands of pregnancy can reveal a predisposition for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and women with a history of GDM are more likely to develop T2DM than women with normoglycemic pregnancies. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore midwives' and diabetes nurses' experience of their role in screening, care, and follow-up of women with gestational diabetes mellitus and, further, to explore their opinions and thoughts about existing routines and guidel

Effectiveness of the implementation of a perinatal bereavement care training programme on nurses and midwives: protocol for a mixed-method study.

INTRODUCTION: The psychological outcomes for many parents who experience perinatal loss depend on nursing staff's ability to provide effective bereavement support. However, most nurses and midwives lack the ability to provide bereavement care and suffer from heavy emotional burden. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the perinatal bereavement care training programme on nurses and midwives to increase their perinatal bereavement care confidence (PBCC) and to reduce secondary traumatic stress and emotional exhaustion. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will follow a mixed methodolo

Assessing the impact of mentorship on knowledge about and self-efficacy for neonatal resuscitation among nurses and midwives in Rwanda.

In the first minute of life after birth, it is critical to effectively manage an infant's respiratory status. Given the critical nature of newborn airway management, it is vital that health professionals have the knowledge and confidence to engage in airway management procedures. Consequently, there has been a call for nurses and midwives to be prepared to skillfully enact neonatal resuscitation interventions when required, especially in low-resource environments, to help reduce neonatal death. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a mentorship program that involves an educatio

Rotating night shift work, sleep quality, selected lifestyle factors and prolactin concentration in nurses and midwives.

The pattern of secretion of many hormones, including prolactin, is dependent on the circadian rhythm. Night shift work involves exposure to artificial light at night and sleep deficiency, which in turn can affect prolactin synthesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate a possible association between night shift work characteristics, sleep quality, lifestyle factors and prolactin concentration, using data from a cross-sectional study of nurses and midwives. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 327 nurses and midwives currently working on rotating night shifts, and 330 nurses and midwiv

Teaching Relational Care for Health Inequalities: Evaluating the Impact of a Program for Community Nurses and Midwives in Primary Care.

INTRODUCTION: Internationally, nurses need to learn and develop relational skills that enable them to engage therapeutically with patients. Relational skills are crucial in contexts of socioeconomic deprivation, where patients face high levels of adversity, inequality, and poor health. They are defined as the interpersonal skills needed to bring about clinical change, while also enhancing staff well-being and support. Educators continue to grapple with how best to design and deliver educational programs that enhance relational skills in the nursing workforce. We report on a realist evaluation
