Differentiating physical discipline from abuse: Q findings from Chinese American mothers and pediatric nurses.

The perception and use of physical discipline (PD) is culture-based, and the differentiation between PD and abuse is subjective and complex. The purpose of this study was to understand how Chinese American mothers and one group of mandated reporters of child abuse (i.e. pediatric nurses) differentiate PD from abuse. Using Q-methodology, 3 viewpoints on PD and abuse differentiation were uncovered from a sample of 35 Chinese American mothers and 48 pediatric nurses. Although there was wide consensus on the most acceptable and most unacceptable parent discipline behaviors across the 3 views, the

Regional Pediatric Education and Assistance Collaborative for Hospice Nurses (REACH): A Tele-Educational Intervention.

Despite the well-known benefits of hospice care for seriously ill children and their families, pediatric hospice services remain difficult to access across community settings. The vast majority of hospice organizations utilize an adult-focused paradigm, in which adult-trained providers often lack the requisite pediatric-specific education to provide high-quality hospice care for children and families. Hospice nurses self-report significant discomfort with pediatric care provision, resulting in hesitation by hospice agencies to accept pediatric patients, further exacerbating deficits in pediatr

Moral distress in pediatric nurses: The influence of spiritual care competence and professional values.

PURPOSE: Pediatric nurses frequently encounter ethically challenging situations involving seriously ill children, family-centered decision-making, and end-of-life care, increasing their risk of moral distress. This study examined the relationships among professional values, spiritual care competence, and moral distress in pediatric nurses and whether professional values and spiritual care competence predict moral distress. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational study included 135 pediatric nurses from pediatric units of three hospitals in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Nu

Implementing Education for Community Adult Hospice Nurses to Expand Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Care.

Children with life-limiting illnesses living in nonurban areas have minimal access to community-based pediatric hospice and palliative care. Barriers such as geography, limited continuing education opportunities, and clinician discomfort compound this issue. Pediatric hospice and palliative patients require specially-trained clinicians to provide holistic support in areas such as disease progression, illness trajectory, and goals of care. An asynchronous online educational module, including a pre- and postmodule survey, was developed to provide education on timely pediatric quality-of-life con

The role of the advanced practice provider in pediatric urology: A census of the pediatric urology nurses and specialists (PUNS).

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of pediatric chronic conditions and demand for lower urinary tract symptom management have risen in recent decades, contributing to growing clinical demand for pediatric urology services. Meeting this demand requires a sufficient and well-supported workforce, and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) have become an increasingly recognized component of urological care delivery. The Pediatric Urology Nurses and Specialists (PUNS) organization represents APPs in pediatric urology in the United States and Canada. This study aimed to conduct a census survey of PUNS members t

Pediatric trichotillomania: clinical presentation, treatment, and implications for nursing professionals.

Trichotillomania (TTM), or compulsive hair pulling, is a disorder that typically onsets in childhood. It is mistaken to believe that children will "age out" of this behavior, as pediatric TTM often has a chronic, debilitating course that does not remit without treatment, resulting in considerable psychological and physical impairment. Because most children with TTM will be seen initially by nursing professionals in the practices of dermatologists, pediatricians, gastroenterologists, and other disciplines, raising nurses' awareness of this disorder is of the utmost importance for accurate nursi

Pediatric oncology nursing: providing care through decades of change.

Pediatric oncology nursing practice has evolved over the years as new technology and trends in health care have precipitated change. Three pediatric oncology nursing leaders share their perspectives on nursing practice as it relates to treatment of a child with leukemia during four different points in time. Their comments illustrate the challenges, resources, and rewards. Their reflections, combined with a survey of the literature over the past half a century, show the dramatic impact of advances in supportive care on the practice of caring for a child with cancer. It is also evident that as t

Effectiveness and safety of independent pediatric nurse practitioners in evaluating plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics Back to Sleep program in 1992 dramatically increased the incidence of posterior plagiocephaly in infants. In 2000, the craniofacial disorders program at Oregon Health & Science University established a plagiocephaly screening clinic staffed by pediatric nurse practitioners. METHODS: Electronic medical records of patients seen in a single accredited craniofacial disorders clinic from 2005 to 2011 were reviewed retrospectively to identify patients screened independently by pediatric nurse practitioners for positional plagiocephaly versus synostosis

Nurse practitioner role in preparing families for pediatric outpatient surgery.

Due to medical advances in surgery and anesthesia and cost of hospital stays, more elective pediatric surgical procedures are being performed in outpatient settings. One proposed advantage of outpatient surgery is decreased anxiety or a shorter period of anxiety for pediatric patients and their families because they are able to go home shortly after the surgery. A literature review was conducted to describe anxiety experienced by pediatric patients and their families in the outpatient surgery setting and to explore ways to decrease that anxiety. Both children and parents reported not feeling e

Nurse practitioners in pediatric critical care: results of a national survey.

The nurse practitioner in pediatric critical care is a distinct advanced practice nursing role that has seen a tremendous increase in development and implementation over the past 10 years. There is a paucity of literature on this unique and valuable role. A total of 74 nurse practitioners practicing in pediatric critical care were surveyed. Part I of the survey solicited descriptive information of the nurse practitioner including background, work environment, reporting structure, and salary. The respondents also identified their role responsibilities that included direct patient management, nu
