Nurse-led digital triage and health literacy navigation: redefining the front door of public health in the artificial intelligence era.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven digital triage is fast becoming the front door of public health systems worldwide. As algorithms take over symptom assessment and risk stratification, however, nurses risk being reduced to validators of machine output, and patients with limited health literacy risk being left behind. This perspective argues that nurses should not merely adapt to AI triage but redefine their role as "health literacy navigators," positioned between algorithmic risk stratification and the patient who must act on it. We outline four functions that define the role: interpretation

House calls by community health workers and public health nurses to improve adherence to isoniazid monotherapy for latent tuberculosis infection: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patient adherence to isoniazid (INH) monotherapy for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) has been suboptimal despite its proven efficacy. Various strategies have been studied to improve adherence, but all have been based at a clinic or treatment program. At the Santa Clara Valley Tuberculosis Clinic, it was our practice to refer a subset of high-risk LTBI patients to the Public Health Department for monthly follow-up at home instead of at the clinic. Our goal was to assess whether house calls by community health workers and public health nurses affected INH adherence or frequency

Public health nurses working on outreach teams have opportunities to exercise their full scope and standards of practi

We examined complexities in DR-TB care transition between community- and hospital-based care. DESIGN: We conducted a case study using medical record data. Four patients were purposively selected to illustrate intersectional complexities in DR-TB care transition involving PHN. RESULTS: Case A (HIV negative male) received PHN care at a community-based facility 124 km from Cape Town. Cases B, C, and D (males living with HIV) received PHN community-based care, averaging

Knowledge of Basic Neonatal Resuscitation and Associated Factors Among Midwives and Nurses in Public Health Institutions in Eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal resuscitation is a means to restore life to a baby from the state of asphyxia. It is a single intervention of birth asphyxia. Over 1.2 million African babies are supposed to die in the first four weeks of their life and many of them in the first 24 hours of birth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The major cause of early neonatal death is neonatal asphyxia, which can be prevented by neonatal resuscitation. However, there is limited evidence on midwives' and nurses' knowledge of neonatal resuscitation in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of midwives a

Changes in public health nurses' knowledge and perception of counseling and clinical skills for breast and cervical cancer control.

This study discusses the findings from two surveys of 459 nurses working in public health about their knowledge and perception of counseling and clinical skills related to breast and cervical cancer control. The first survey was conducted in 1993 before professional education efforts with the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) began in North Carolina. The second survey was carried out in 1996. The results show a significant increase from 1993 to 1996 in recognition of increasing age, nulliparity, late childbearing, and family history as risk factors for breast cancer, and for s

Nursing students' perceptions of their knowledge of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues: effectiveness of a multi-purpose assignment in a public health nursing class.

Nurses work with diverse populations, but the nursing literature lacks research, theoretical frameworks, or practice guidelines regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health. Through diverse teaching strategies, students explored issues related to LGBT patients, families, and nurses using a cultural humility lens. Diverse teaching strategies included readings, a 2-hour presentation on LGBT health issues, and an assignment to conduct a scripted interview with two nurse key informants, based on the Health Care Equality Index (HEI). Students completed an online LGBT awareness pr
