This commentary explores the growing prevalence of impostor syndrome among nurse lecturers in university settings. Even though impostor syndrome has an impact on personality, wellbeing, and productivity, it frequently goes unnoticed due to the professionalism and resilience associated with the role. Impostor syndrome, or the impostor phenomenon, is characterised by persistent self-doubt despite evident achievement and is particularly recognised among early-career academics adjusting to unfamiliar systems and expectations. The discussion critically analyses impostor syndrome as a contemporary i

Hypnosis has been around for a long time, and is now accepted as a mind-body practice that complements the treatment process. Within our hospital structure, we have set up hypnosis sessions for hospital staff. These "times for oneself" enable patients to mobilize their internal resources. These practices help to legitimize hypnosis as a complementary form of nursing care.

Transgender patients that have undergone metoidioplasty with urethral lengthening may face challenges in healthcare settings that necessitate urinary catheterization. Currently, there are no readily accessible resources that aim to inform nurses about the appearance and treatment of this anatomy. Here, a 3D animation has been created, showing labelled comparative anatomy. Evaluation of this animation will result in valuable feedback of which video elements have facilitated successful learning. Implications for this project call attention to the need for gender-diverse representation within uri

Neurodivergent conditions such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Tourette's syndrome are common, and it is highly likely that practice assessors and supervisors will be asked to support neurodivergent nursing students in their practice learning environments. This article details the strengths that neurodivergent students can bring to nursing, as well as some of the challenges they may experience in practice settings. It outlines how practice assessors and supervisors can develop neuro-inclusive learning environments where neurodive

Over the past 30 years, researchers have found that childhood trauma and its subsequent stress have a strong and cumulative effect on health in adulthood. Trauma in childhood often leads to mental health problems, skeletal fractures, and early death from conditions such as heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and liver disease. Compounding the effects of traumatic stress, health care systems often create a population of "never-served" persons who avoid health care settings because they've been subject to judgment and marginalization. Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a skill underutilized by healt

The private practice nurse can be confronted with patients living in situations of extreme poverty. During her home visits, she is sometimes reminded of the lack of prevention and the difficulties of accessing care. In her daily practice, she plays an important role faced with these inequalities in health.

Imagery has been used as a healing practice since ancient times. Its reemergence in modern medicine began in the second half of the 20th century, when research suggested that imagery could help reduce patients' pain and anxiety and improve their quality of life and outlook on their illness. While current evidence is insufficient to support claims that imagery affects disease progression, research suggests that this method of inducing relaxation encourages patients' healing process and gives them a greater sense of autonomy in relation to disease and its management. Because imagery is noninvasi

AIM: This commentary shares my views of evidence-based nursing as a framework for practice, pointing out its limitations and identifying a wider base of appraisal tools required for making good clinical decisions.
BACKGROUND: As the principles of evidence-based nursing take an increasingly greater hold on nursing education, policy and management, it is important to consider the range of other decision-making tools which are subordinated by this approach.
EVALUATION: This article summarizes nursing's simultaneous reliance on and critique of evidence-based practice (EBP) in a context of inadeq

AIMS: To determine whether pre-registration nursing students with dyslexia experience specific problems in developing clinical competence, identify what strategies they use and how they may be supported in clinical practice.
METHOD: Qualitative case study methodology was used. Stage 1 involved semi-structured interviews with seven students, three support and eight teaching staff, postal questionnaires from nine mentors, in addition to a review of policy documentation. Stage 2 involved a two-year study of four students on their branch programme and included semi-structured interviews with seve

Nuchal cord, or cord around the neck of an infant at birth, is a common finding that has implications for labor, management at birth, and subsequent neonatal status. A nuchal cord occurs in 20% to 30% of births. All obstetric providers need to learn management techniques to handle the birth of an infant with a nuchal cord. Management of a nuchal cord can vary from clamping the cord immediately after the birth of the head and before the shoulders to not clamping at all, depending on the provider's learned practices. Evidence for specific management techniques is lacking. Cutting the umbilical c

Trauma is the leading cause of death in people less than 40 years of age. Blunt or penetrating trauma injuries may be a result of gunshot wounds, stabbings, head injuries, burns, falls or motor vehicle collisions. Unlike other patients entering the health care system, trauma victims have no time for hospital preparation. The physiologic and psychosocial complications resulting directly from the traumatic incident provide response patterns not typical of other patients. Further to this unpredictability, the trauma patient usually sustains multiple system injuries, making it difficult to design c

Health care reform has created many opportunities for advanced practice nurses and for OR nurses who want to go beyond traditional circulating and scrub roles. This article will briefly differentiate between expanded and advanced nursing practice and offer a definition and conceptual model for the surgical arena. Literature will be reviewed related to development, evaluation, and practice issues of the emerging role of the surgical advanced practice nurse.

Iain Chalmers and the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, Oxford, England, developed a comprehensive listing of perinatal care procedures shown to reduce the frequency of adverse outcomes during pregnancy and childbirth. This list was used as a framework for a pilot study conducted in 1992 that reviewed similarities and differences in opinion and practice style between certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and obstetrician/gynecologists. Twenty CNMs and 57 obstetrician/gynecologists who were active clinical practitioners in San Diego commented on 24 items drawn from Chalmers' work. The CNMs were m

This research examined the mammography behavior of 145 nurses as well as their patient teaching practices about mammography. A subsample of 100 were identified as compliant or noncompliant with mammogram screening guidelines. Nurses who complied and those who did not comply were not significantly different on variables of age, licensure, education level, or clinical practice setting. Nor was a positive family history associated with compliance. In patient teaching about mammography, only 25% of nurses reported teaching. The vast majority of nurses, 75%, rarely or only occasionally did the pati

BACKGROUND: Gaslighting is a subtle and insidious form of psychological abuse in the workplace that operates through the distortion or denial of reality and the induction of cognitive doubt, ultimately undermining individuals' confidence in their perceptions and professional judgment. Although the concept has gained increasing attention in organizational and psychological literature, gaslighting remains theoretically underdeveloped and conceptually ambiguous within nursing practice. It is frequently conflated with related phenomena such as workplace bullying, psychological violence, or incivil

Makaton is a unique multimodal language programme that uses signs, symbols and speech. It offers a flexible communication system that can be used across settings with a wide range of people, including those with learning disabilities or communication difficulties. This article explains what Makaton entails and how it can be used to aid communication with service users. The authors suggest that Makaton should be integrated in preregistration nurse education for all fields of practice, particularly learning disability nursing. Effective communication skills are essential for all nurses and learn

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis has influenced practice changes to mitigate risks to patients receiving opioids. It is essential that nurses understand contemporary guidelines to provide safe patient care for patients receiving opioids.
PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess general knowledge of opioids among nurses in nonprescribing patient care roles.
METHODS: A survey was developed, validated, and deployed to 564 nurses in a large hospital system.
RESULTS: Nurses had strong knowledge of basic pharmacology, the conjunctive use of nonopioids for pain relief, and differences in analgesia
