Supervisor Phubbing and Nurses' Cyberloafing Behavior: The Mediating Role of Clan Culture in Digitally Enabled Work Environments.

BACKGROUND: Digital technology overuse in healthcare settings has introduced new forms of workplace disruption, including supervisor phubbing, defined as the act of diverting attention from subordinates to mobile devices. Supervisor phubbing may be associated with nurses' cyberloafing behavior, while the organizational cultural context may influence this relationship. AIM: To examine the association between supervisor phubbing and nurses' cyberloafing behavior and to investigate the mediating role of clan organizational culture in this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational s

The handover: uncovering the hidden practices of nurses.

This paper considers the ways in which the nursing handover involves a complex network of communication that impacts on nursing interactions. The critical ethnographic study upon which this paper is based involved a research group of six nurses who worked in one critical care unit. Data-collection methods involved professional journalling, participant observation, and individual and focus group interviews. The nursing handover took on many forms and served different purposes. At the start of a shift, the nurse coordinator of the previous shift presented a 'global' handover of all patients to o

Corporate working in health visiting: a concept analysis.

AIM OF THE PAPER: The aim of this paper is to examine individualized health visiting care and compare it to corporate working within a consensual management style. Corporate working has been discussed and used in many different ways since the idea first came to light at the end of the 1980s. Resource management makes it an appealing model, however, analysing how corporate working functions in the practice setting reveals the complexity of this method of service provision. BACKGROUND: This paper is based on a method of practice developed by health visitors in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, who i

Public violence, staff harassment and the wellbeing of nursing staff: an analysis of national survey data.

Instances of physical violence from members of the public and non-physical harassment from colleagues are highly prevalent in the health-care workforce and can be damaging to both staff and patients. While policy has tended to focus on the more visible problem of public violence, little is known about which of the two behaviours is the most damaging. This study compared the consequences of public violence and staff harassment for wellbeing in two large samples of English nurses. The results revealed that while both types of aggression were related to decreased levels of staff wellbeing, staff

Rationing organs using psychosocial and lifestyle criteria.

The role of patient psychosocial and lifestyle characteristics in decisions about the allocation of scarce health care resources has not been examined. In this national survey using the Criteria for Selection of Transplant Recipient (CSTR) Scale, organ transplant coordinators (N = 559) identified the psychosocial and lifestyle criteria they believe should be considered in patient selection/rejection for organ transplant. Using factor analysis to reduce the data, six factors were identified: current lifestyle/psychiatric problems, family/socioeconomic issues, habits, controlled lifestyle/psychi

Clinical Supervision in Nursing and Evidence-Based Practices in Radial Haemostasis: A Pilot Study.

AIM: To explore radial artery haemostasis practices in relation to recommended protocols, alongside the strategies and characteristics of clinical supervision among nurses providing this care. BACKGROUND: The radial artery is the preferred access route for coronary angiography, but successful outcomes depend on appropriate postprocedure haemostasis management, primarily a nursing responsibility. Clinical supervision supports professional development and care quality, yet little is known about its relationship to haemostasis protocols in interventional cardiology settings. METHODS: A descript

From the ICU Bedside: Applying the Transnational Clinical Academic Doctorate Lens to a Clinically Embedded PhD Journey.

AIM: To critically reflect on a transnational, clinically embedded doctoral journey undertaken during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and to draw conceptual and systemic lessons for doctoral education and clinical academic nursing pathways. BACKGROUND: Reflective accounts of doctoral study exist, yet few examine practice-based PhDs conducted across different countries and health systems during a global crisis. This paper analyses one such pathway-enrolment at an Australian university with research embedded within the UK National Health Service-to explore resilience, identity formation, mento

Beyond clinical trials: Extending the role of the clinical research nurse into social care and homeless research.

AIM: Clinical research nurses work at the fulcrum of clinical trials with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. In England, the National Institute for Health Research (the main funder of health research) has broadened its scope to encompass social care research. The expectation is that clinical research nurses will expand their skill set to support these new studies, many of which will employ qualitative and mixed methods. This discussion paper explores the challenges of facilitating this clinical academic workforce development through a case study of a homeless health and social care re

Nurses' perspectives on the care provided to cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Optimal care for patients with cancer involves the provision of effective physical and psychological care. Nurses are key providers of this care; however, the effectiveness of care is dependent on the nurses' training, skills, attitudes, and beliefs. OBJECTIVE: The study reported in this article explored cancer nurses' perceptions of their ability to provide psychosocial care to adults with cancer and their subsequent evaluation of the effectiveness of the care provided. This study was the first part of a larger project that evaluated the effectiveness of Proctor's model of clinic

The Lao People's Democratic Republic: maternal mortality and female mortality: determining causes of deaths.

A sample of 380 female deaths in the age group 15-49 years from 16 provinces of the Lao People's Democratic Republic were analyzed to determine the most likely cause of death. 127 deaths were classified as maternal, 28% occurred during pregnancy and the remaining 72% within six weeks of the termination of pregnancy. Almost three quarters of all maternal deaths were directly related to obstetrical complications during pregnancy or childbirth. Many of these deaths could probably have been avoided, if appropriate obstetric care had been available. The level of attention to problems related to mat

Secondary Traumatic Stress and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Nurses: Mediating Role of Psychological Distress and Moderating Role of Emotional Support.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate whether psychological distress mediates the relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS) and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among clinical nurses, and whether perceived emotional support moderates this mediating effect. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 205 clinical nurses who had direct patient contact and trauma-related experience were included. Data were collected using validated instruments: the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-12 (DASS-12), Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R

Pediatric Head Injuries in Summer Camps.

Summer camps have a unique supervisory environment that may lead to increased head injury risk for children. The epidemiology of head injuries in camps is unclear. We partnered with CampDoc.com to review head injury reports from camp nurses in 2016 from 197 camps in 36 states. A total of 4290 (92%) reports were coded as definite head injuries, 47% (n = 2002) in female campers, with median camper age of 10 years. Head injury severity was coded as mild (94%, n = 4040), moderate (6%, n = 248), or severe (<1%, n = 2). Only 3% (n = 134) were medically evaluated, and 29% (n = 1221) were sports-relat

Developing and Validating a New Scale to Assess Signs of Neglect of Infants and Caregivers.

This study aimed to develop a scale assessing the early signs of infant neglect and to test its reliability and validity. Neglect is a frequent type of child maltreatment and a serious problem worldwide, but it has received limited research attention. Previous studies of neglect assessment have mainly been targeted toward assessing the risk of apparent neglectful caregivers and neglected children. Early needs assessment scale focused on neglect evaluated by public health professionals in infants is necessary for the urgency of preventing neglect from infancy. Participants were community/public
