The validity of skin care protocols followed by women with breast cancer receiving external radiation.

Skin care in women receiving external radiation to the breast varies among institutions. Studies have been conducted looking at the effect that various skin care products have on the onset and severity of radiation-induced skin reactions in those patients. Results show that no significant difference exists among these products. The practice of avoiding aluminum-based deodorant on the treated side and avoiding use of any skin care products four hours prior to treatment is not evidence based but often is part of skin care protocols for women receiving breast irradiation. A review of the literatu

Associations Between Nursing Students' Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes and Participation in Experiential Learning on Care for People With Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Experiential learning activities on care for people with disabilities (PWD) would help nursing students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) needed to provide quality care for PWD. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived changes in nursing students' KSAs related to the care for PWD following participation in health assessment and prevention (HAP) experiential learning activities. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental, pre- and posttest educational intervention study. Nursing students (n = 160) attended multiple experiential learning activi

Child Abuse Response Simulation for Advanced Practice Nursing Students.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was for advanced practice nursing students to gain experience taking a history from a parent or caregiver and communicating the treatment plan for an infant in which child abuse is suspected. PROJECT: Fifty-three students participated in a 1:1 simulated encounter with a standardized patient acting as the mother of an infant with a leg injury that reportedly resulted from a fall from the couch. Students received feedback from the standardized patient via an assessment tool and debriefed with faculty immediately after the simulation. OUTCOME: All students d

Heparin solution for maintaining peripheral venous catheter patency in children: a survey of current practice in Italian pediatric units.

BACKGROUND: Prolonging the duration of peripheral venous catheters (PVC) as long as possible in children is a nursing priority. However, available studies provide conflicting evidence on what kind of flush/lock solution should be used to increase the life of PVCs in children. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical behavior of nurses working in Italian pediatric units with regards to PVCs flushing and locking practices. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Nurses were invited to participate using the network of the Italian Society of Pediatric Nursing Science. Those participating completed an online

[Parents' satisfaction at the birth of a handicapped child following a family intervention].

The aim of this study is to estimate parents' satisfaction following a surgical procedure on their child. This includes support as well as additional information and documentation for the individual parent (cognitive and emotional), conjugal, parental and other family members. The majority of parents are satisfied with the treatment program, realizing that the treatment enables them to adapt to their new situation, that is, as parents of a newborn child suffering from health problems. This support allows them to recognize and talk about their own fears and emotions as well as those of their pa

Pressure ulcers in extended care facilities: report of a survey.

A survey including 15 extended care facilities with access to ET nurse consulting services was conducted to assess current wound care protocols, practices, and educational backgrounds as well as requirements. Sixty-seven percent of facilities surveyed used a system to describe pressure ulcers. Wound care was provided by licensed practical nurses in 90% of the institutions and product decisions were made by the physician in 65% of facilities surveyed. Gauze-type dressings were used most frequently on all stages and types of pressure ulcers. A significant correlation between ulcer type and dress

Peer support systems and professional identity of student nurses undertaking a UK learning disability nursing programme.

This practitioner based action research examines the implementation of the peer assisted study scheme (PASS) and individual peer mentoring in a cohort of first year undergraduate nursing students. It arose out of the desire of a small number of students in one UK university to transfer from the learning (intellectual) disabilities nursing field to other fields. The number of learning disabilities nurses is falling in England, and nursing shortages and student nurse retention generally is an international concern. The peer support was evaluated by 21 completed questionnaires. All the students h

Breast cancer screening education: comparing outcome skills of nurse practitioner students and medical residents.

BACKGROUND: Nurse practitioner students, along with all primary care trainees, need breast cancer screening education. The purpose of the study was to compare the performances of nurse practitioner students and medical residents before and after receiving training. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a pretest/posttest design, 51 nurse practitioner students and 47 medical residents received training either from a standardized patient or from a lecture/demonstration class. Before training and 1 year after, participants took the written test and had their skills evaluated by a standardized patient. There w

[The most frequent nursing diagnoses in a gynecological admission unit].

Our objective was to identify the most frequent nursing diagnoses in a gynecological admission unit. The defining characteristics were surveyed from the data reported in the nursing case history and the patient files of 30 patients. The nursing diagnoses were found according to the revised NANDA Taxionomy I. The five most frequent nursing diagnoses were: risk for infection (30 cases); risk for pain (24 cases); health-seeking behaviors (11 cases); fear (10 cases) and stress incontinence (5 cases).

The effect of violence on primary health care nurses in selected areas of the former Natal region.

An exploratory descriptive study aimed at analyzing problems confronting nurses in primary health care settings during civil unrest is described. Data were collected by means of open and closed ended questionnaires. The response is recorded from twenty five participants who completed the questionnaire. Data analysis showed that nurses who were directly or indirectly affected by violence at work or at home were unable to render health care effectively. Experiences of harassment, intimidation and physical abuse were reported. Recommendations include what employers and professional organisations

Multinational validation of anxiety, hopelessness, and ineffective airway clearance.

The effective use of nursing diagnosis internationally depends in part on incorporating language and cultural difference into the common language of nursing. International validation studies can provide a basis for this effort. This study tested three diagnoses--anxiety, hopelessness, and ineffective airway clearance--through multinational validation. The Diagnostic Content Validity (DCV) model was used to collect data from critical care nurses in six countries. Defining characteristics rated as critical (greater than .80) by the total sample were dyspnea for ineffective airway clearance and p

Colostomy patients: psychological adjustment at 10 weeks and 1 year after surgery in districts which employed stoma-care nurses and districts which did not.

Two hundred and fifteen colostomy patients were interviewed at 10 weeks after surgery from a stratified random sample of 12 health districts in which stoma-care nurses were employed and eight other districts: 85 survivors who did not have restorative surgery were reinterviewed 1 year later. The Present State Examination (PSE) was used to assess the prevalence of affective disorder on both occasions. Analysis of covariance of the 10-week PSE scores revealed that age was unrelated to psychological adjustment after controlling for the extent and severity of patients' symptoms and that patients in

An examination of nurses' practices when performing aseptic technique for wound dressings.

The purpose of this study was to establish if nurses' actions when carrying out 'aseptic technique' using the 'gloves technique' are simple and based on up-to-date knowledge and do not incur unnecessary wastage. A sample of convenience was used involving 21 trained nurses. Observation and formal interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Results showed that not all nurses in the sample applied a 'simple aseptic technique'. The rationale for the practice of aseptic technique was not always research based, though other aspects of wound management were derived from researc
