Temporal Trend of Gestational Syphilis between 2008 and 2018 in Brazil: Association with Socioeconomic and Health Care Factors.

The increased number of cases in recent years has turned syphilis into a global public health problem. In 2020, 115,371 cases of acquired syphilis were reported (detection rate of 54.5 cases/100,000 inhabitants) in Brazil. In that same period, the country notified 61,441 cases of gestational syphilis (detection rate of 21.6 per 1000 live births). The number of syphilis cases points to the need to reinforce surveillance, prevention, and infection control actions, which is a worrying scenario for government organizations. This study aims to describe the temporal trend of gestational syphilis fro

Global health leadership training in resource-limited settings: a collaborative approach by academic institutions and local health care programs in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Due to a limited health workforce, many health care providers in Africa must take on health leadership roles with minimal formal training in leadership. Hence, the need to equip health care providers with practical skills required to lead high-impact health care programs. In Uganda, the Afya Bora Global Health Leadership Fellowship is implemented through the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) and her partner institutions. Lessons learned from the program, presented in this paper, may guide development of in-service training opportunities to enhance leadership

Assessment and nonpharmacological management for patients with cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome: a best practice implementation project.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS) is a common multifactorial syndrome, which affects up to 80% patients with advanced cancer. At present, evidence to support the benefit of pharmacological intervention in the management of CACS is limited. Patients would benefit from standard procedures for early assessment and identification of cancer anorexia-cachexia, and using nonpharmacological strategies to manage patients with CACS. This best practice implementation project aimed to implement an evidence-based practice in assessing and managing patients with CACS, thereby i

The utilization of clinical decision support tools to identify neonatal hypothermia and its associated risk factors: A prospective observational study.

Hypothermia (axillary temperature less than 36.5°) is a major source of neonatal morbidity and mortality, with a disproportionate burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the importance of thermoregulation on newborn outcomes, the global epidemiologic landscape of neonatal hypothermia is poorly characterized. Clinical decision support (CDS) software provides point-of-care recommendations to guide clinical management and may support data capture in settings with limited informatics infrastructure. Towards this end, we conducted a prospective observational study of the Novi

Is health information technology associated with patient safety in the United States?

(1) Estimates using national data provide tentative evidence of a positive relationship between health information technology (HIT) and clinical quality. Electronic medical records (EMRs) are associated with a statistically significant aversion of two post-operative infections per year at the average U.S. acute care hospital. (2) The study found no significant relationships for two other types of HIT - nurse charting and picture archiving communication systems (PACS) - or for two other measures of patient safety - post-operative hemorrhages/hematomas and post-operative pulmonary embolism/deep

Age-Friendly Design and Optimization of Digital Health Technologies for Medication Adherence in Older Adults With Chronic Diseases: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Medication nonadherence represents a persistent clinical challenge among older adults with chronic diseases, complicating long-term disease management and prognosis. Digital health technologies (DHTs) deliver promising opportunities for remote, out-of-hospital medication management; nevertheless, age-related cognitive-physiological decline and insufficient digital literacy widen the digital divide, creating barriers to real-world uptake and sustained use of DHTs. Existing systematic reviews mainly synthesize intervention effect sizes, but few unpack multilevel drivers of mixed outc

How to assess and improve quality of medical education: lessons learned from Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo.

There is no such science as medicine where half life is 7 years, what means that in 3-4 years 50% of current knowledge will be wrong. If doctors use old techniques and methods then they will cure patients wrongly. Very fast and rapid increase of biomedical sciences and medical information in certain way force medical professionals to continuity learning in order to stay update. In this project a quantitative method of examination has been used. For the purposes of the research a survey questionnaires were created consisted of 28, 35 and 18 questions for all three groups of examinees. Beside ge

Clinical practice guideline: adult sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on managing sinusitis, defined as symptomatic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. Sinusitis affects 1 in 7 adults in the United States, resulting in about 31 million individuals diagnosed each year. Since sinusitis almost always involves the nasal cavity, the term rhinosinusitis is preferred. The guideline target patient is aged 18 years or older with uncomplicated rhinosinusitis, evaluated in any setting in which an adult with rhinosinusitis would be identified, monitored, or managed. This guideline is intended for all clini

A lifecycle governance and learning health system framework for trustworthy, generalizable, and sustainable human-ai partnership in clinical practice: Lessons from the asthma-guidance and prediction system (A-GPS).

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical decision support (CDS) holds promise for proactive, personalized, and precision care. However, current understanding of how to establish trustworthy human-AI partnerships is in its infancy, despite its critical importance for implementing AI in healthcare. We present the Asthma-Guidance and Prediction System (A-GPS) as a case study of a practice-integrated AI platform that demonstrates how trustworthy, generalizable and sustainable AI can be developed, evaluated, and implemented in real-world asthma care. We describe major challenge

Development of the perceived AI-physician consistency and trust scale for cardiology: a Delphi-based study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated considerable potential in cardiovascular diagnostic assistance and clinical decision support. A critical safety-related question, however, remains poorly characterised: how patients subjectively perceive the consistency between artificial intelligence (AI) and physician diagnoses, and how they redistribute trust between the two when their outputs diverge. The costs of miscalibrated trust are ultimately borne downstream by emergency and intensive care services, a pathway typified by decompensating heart failure, in which algorithm-reass
