Many Greek politicians and media attribute high dissatisfaction with the public health services to the quality of public hospitals. Provoking this view, this study attempts to investigate the patient's opinion and provides some preliminary results for the level of services provided by three public hospitals. The creation and implementation of the role of the psychiatric liaison nurse in three general hospitals are described. The historical evolution and theoretical bases of the role are reviewed, as well as the specific reasons for creation of such a role in each of the three hospitals. Three typical patient consultations by liaison nurses illustrate the need for provision of such services within the general hospital. The emergence of molecular genetics into a routine medical service is demanding a paradigm shift in medical practice. An adequate reformation of its discipline and technology is required in every field of medical service including nursing. In 2000, the JFCR hospital founded a Familial Cancer Center to provide genetic counseling and genetic testing for cancer patents.
