Sources of moral distress for nursing staff providing care to residents with dementia.

The World Health Organization estimates the number of people living with dementia at approximately 35.6 million; they project a doubling of this number by 2030 and tripling by 2050. Although the majority of people living with a dementia live in the community, residential facility care by nursing care providers is a significant component of the dementia journey in most countries. Research has also shown that caring for persons with dementia can be emotionally, physically, and ethically challenging, and that turnover in nursing staff in residential care settings tends to be high. Moral distress

Winter Storm Uri Reduced Availability of Daily Direct-Care Nurse Staff in Texas Nursing Homes.

We examined the effect of Winter Storm Uri on daily direct-care nurse staffing levels in 1,173 Texas nursing homes (NHs) from February 13th to 19th, 2021. We used data from Payroll-Based Journaling and the Care Compare website. Linear mixed effects models were used to estimate the linear and non-linear change in staffing. During Winter Storm Uri, Texas NHs experienced a linear decrease in daily staffing levels with subsequent non-linear increase for registered nurses (RNs; p < .001) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs; p < .001), and staffing increased linearly for licensed practical nurses

Symptoms associated with urinary tract infection in nursing home residents: a study among nursing home staff across eight European countries.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common among nursing home (NH) residents and a leading cause of antibiotic use. NH staff members are key in recognizing suspected UTIs based on observed symptoms. This study surveyed 286 staff across eight European countries to identify which symptoms prompt UTI suspicion. While UTI-specific symptoms like painful and frequent urination were commonly cited, non-specific signs such as foul-smelling urine, confusion, and behavioural changes were also frequently reported. These findings reveal substantial cross-country variation and highlight the diagnostic chal

A review of the regulatory and functional aspects of prison health care and nursing staff.

The aim of this study of prison health care staff in Prison Health Care and Nursing Units is twofold. The first one is to consider those aspects of the legal system applicable to them as government employees of the General State Administration at the service of Prisons, highlighting the peculiarities of the legal regulations that can be applied as a result of providing said service. The second, based on the general regulations on prison health contained in Organic Law 1/1979, of 26 September, General Penitentiary Law and the implementing regulations thereof, approved by Royal Decree 190/1966,

[Legal and Practical Solutions for the Expanding the Roles of Medical Support Staff Nurses].

PURPOSE: Medical support staff nurses have traditionally performed various supportive tasks for physicians, often extending beyond standard nursing roles. Despite these long-standing practices, there is a notable lack of official recognition and legal protection for these expanded responsibilities, leading to increasing legal concerns. Therefore, there is a need for proposing a rational solution to address these issues. METHODS: The number of medical support staff nurses is rising, particularly as they fill gaps left by the 2024 resident physician strike. The study focuses on identifying pote

A foodborne norovirus outbreak in a nursing home and spread to staff and their household contacts.

On 16 March 2018, a nursing home notified a possible acute gastroenteritis outbreak that affected 11 people. Descriptive and case-control studies and analysis of clinical and environmental samples were carried out to determine the characteristics of the outbreak, its aetiology, the transmission mechanism and the causal food. The extent of the outbreak in and outside the nursing home was determined and the staff factors influencing propagation were studied by multivariate analysis. A turkey dinner on March 14 was associated with the outbreak (OR 4.22, 95% CI 1.11-16.01). Norovirus genogroups I

Markers of hepatitis B in nurses and domestic staff in an area of high endemicity.

Results obtained in two sero-epidemiologic surveys of hospital personnel in Durban were collated to yield information on 423 nurses and 141 domestic staff. The prevalence of antibodies to HBV was 14.9 per cent in 101 white nurses, 52.5 per cent in 322 African nurses and 51.8 per cent in 141 African domestics. This represents a greater than eight times increase for white nurses and a 50 per cent increase for African nurses and domestics over that seen in the equivalent blood donor groups (P less than 0.001 in each case). Antibody prevalence increased with age for all three staff groups, as did

Assessing organizational social context in surgical domains: perspectives of nursing staff and first-line nurse managers and their associations with nurse-focused outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Nurse shortages underscore the need to understand how organizational culture and climate affect nurse-focused outcomes in surgical care. This study analyzed how nursing staff and first-line nurse managers perceive organizational culture and climate in surgical domains and explored the differences in their perceptions. Furthermore, it analyzed how these perceptions and discrepancies correlate with nurse-focused outcomes, such as nursing staff sickness absences and gross turnover. Additionally, the study investigated how unit sizes and care settings influence the relationship between

Resident, family, and staff perceptions of the 'Good Life' in nursing home dementia care.

Providing high-quality care for nursing home residents with dementia is challenging due to staff turnover and complex care needs. This paper examines what constitutes 'good' days for residents, families, and staff. Guided by Gitlin's "Good Life" model, we conducted 46 telephone interviews with 11 residents with dementia, 19 family members, and 16 staff from seven nursing homes. Family or staff assisted residents during interviews. Data were analyzed thematically. Residents described better days as those with consistent daily routines and meaningful social interactions, particularly with staff.

HIV Transmission Worry Predicts Discrimination Intentions Among Nursing Students and Ward Staff in India.

Health facility stigma impedes HIV care and treatment. Worry of contracting HIV while caring for people living with HIV is a key driver of health facility stigma, however evidence for this relationship is largely cross-sectional. This study evaluates this relationship longitudinally amongst nursing students and ward staff in India. Worry of contracting HIV and other known predictors of intent to discriminate were collected at baseline and 6 months in 916 nursing students and 747 ward staff. Using fixed effects regression models, we assessed the effect of key predictors on intent to discriminat
