Allergy is a very uncommon cause of diarrhoea. Other mechanisms, medical diseases and infections, psychological and pseudoallergic reactions, intolerance reactions, and enzyme defects/deficiency, and many other conditions are much more common. If food allergy is strongly suspected diagnosis may be difficult, even for allergologists, as it requires a mosaic of history, skin and in vitro tests, diagnostic diet, and even provocation tests. It is important to recognise diarrhoea "accompanying" allergic urticaria and anaphylactic reactions as part of the symptomatology of the primary dermatological

Atopic disorders such as atopic dermatitis and asthma have been characterised by an imbalance in interferon-gamma (INF-gamma) and IL-4. Whether similar imbalances are found in atopic disorders with different clinical manifestations, such as IgE mediated immediate food hypersensitivity, is not clear. We have examined the in vitro production of INF-gamma and IL-4 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) following phytohaemagglutinin stimulation from children with isolated immediate IgE mediated food hypersensitivity (egg, milk, "nut"), children with moderate and severe atopic dermatitis, and

BACKGROUND: Characteristics and outcomes of tree nut (TN) oral food challenges (OFCs) in patients with TN allergy or sensitization alone are poorly studied.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation between TN sensitization levels and OFC outcomes.
METHODS: Open TN OFCs performed from 2007 through 2015 at a referral center were analyzed to compare outcome based on skin prick test (SPT) wheal size, food-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE), peanut co-allergy, and TN sensitization only vs TN allergy with sensitization to other TNs. Delayed OFC was defined as longer than 12 months from the time of an sI

Adverse reactions after food intake are commonly reported and a cause of concern and anxiety that can lead to a very strict diet. The severity of the reaction can vary depending on the type of food and mechanism, and it is not always easy to disentangle different hypersensitivity diagnoses, which sometimes can exist simultaneously. After a carefully taken medical history, hypersensitivity to food can often be ruled out or suspected. The most common type of allergic reaction is immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy (prevalence 5-10%). Symptoms vary from mild itching, stomach pain, and ra

BACKGROUND: For individuals with a nut allergy, the avoidance of allergens is particularly challenging in situations where they are not preparing their own food. Many allergic reactions occur when eating outside the home.
OBJECTIVE: To identify and explore the challenges faced by nut-allergic individuals (NAIs) when they are eating in restaurants and other eating establishments.
METHODS: A qualitative interview study was conducted with 32 adults with a clinical history of allergy to peanuts and/or tree nuts.
RESULTS: The main strategies that participants adopted to manage the risk of allerg

Although pine nuts have gained increasing popularity, systematic studies of their allergens remain limited. Vicilin-like seed storage protein is an allergen in pine nuts. In this study, a 50 kDa protein from Pinus yunnanensis was purified and identified as a vicilin. Recombinant vicilin was expressed in Escherichia coli. Serological, spectroscopic, and bioinformatic methods were employed to evaluate its IgE/IgG-binding capacities, structural, and physicochemical characteristics. Results indicated that vicilin demonstrated potent IgE/IgG-binding capacities and was composed of 463 amino acids. V

Hazelnut is a major food allergen, and hypoallergenic processing methods remain limited. This study evaluated whether cold plasma (CP) treatment can reduce the allergenicity of hazelnut protein (HNP) in a BALB/c mouse model. Mice were sensitized with untreated HNP or CP-treated HNP for 10 min (CP10) or 30 min (CP30) (operating parameters: 120 kV, 50 Hz, 200 mA, atmospheric air), with PBS-sensitized mice as negative controls. Untreated HNP induced a robust allergic response, whereas mice sensitized with CP10- or CP30-treated HNP exhibited reduced allergic symptoms and intestinal inflammation. A

Pine nut allergy is a global food safety concern, yet the epitope of the major allergen from Pinus yunnanensis Pin y 2 remains unknown. We identified linear B-cell epitopes of Pin y 2 using five bioinformatics tools, followed by indirect ELISA with rabbit anti-Pin y 2 IgG and sera from pine nut-allergic patients. Four IgE epitopes and three IgG epitopes were validated. All epitopes are surface-located and predominantly in negatively charged electrostatic regions. Alanine scanning revealed that leucine (L97, L98), glutamic acid (E419, E434, E436), and glutamine (Q442) are key residues, with the

Although there is a general perception that the prevalence of food allergy is increasing, data supporting this are limited. Food is the least common cause of fatal anaphylaxis, and fortunately, it is a very rare event; however, it is also unpredictable. There is widespread consensus that severe reactions cannot be predicted in a clinically meaningful way. Certain food triggers are more frequently associated with fatal anaphylaxis than others. In observational studies, peanut and tree nuts account for at least 30% to 50% of fatalities, with seafood and cow's milk also associated with fatal reac

The incidence of latex-allergic patients is probably higher than suspected. A spectrum of IgE-dependent allergic reactions to latex products including urticaria, rhinitis, asthma, angioedema, and life-threatening anaphylaxis has been increasingly reported in recent years. We describe three patients with rubber hypersensitivity and allergy to fruit (banana and chestnut). Immediate positive responses were obtained in prick tests with latex, banana, and chestnut extracts. Histamine release was positive and specific IgE antibodies to all three extracts were detected by fluorescence radioimmunoassa

Food allergy (hypersensitivity) is a form of adverse food reaction caused by an immunological response to a particular food. IgE-mediated food allergy is responsible for most immediate-type food-induced hypersensitivity reactions. The prevalence of food allergy in the general population, not including oral allergy syndrome, is about 1-2%. While adults might tend to be allergic to fish, crustaceans, peanuts, and tree nuts, children, on the other hand, tend to be allergic to cow's milk, egg white, wheat, and soy. Food is the most common eliciting factor of anaphylaxis (45%), followed by drugs (2

BACKGROUND: The double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge test (DBPCFC) is the gold standard in cashew nut allergy. This test is costly, time consuming and not without side effects. Analysis of IgE reactivity to cashew nut components may reduce the need for food challenge tests.
METHODS: In a prospective and multicentre study, children with suspected cashew nut allergy underwent a DBPCFC with cashew nut. Specific IgE to cashew nut and to the components Ana o 1, 2 and 3 were determined. A skin prick test (SPT) with cashew nut extract was performed. The association between the outcome of

Seed storage proteins are extremely stable allergens in nuts, seeds, and legumes and are responsible for the most severe allergic reactions to these foods. The cross-reactivity between seed storage proteins from different sources has not been studied at a molecular level so far. This study aimed to ascertain the cross-reactivity between walnut and hazelnut seed storage proteins using recombinant allergens. Sera from 13 consecutive patients with severe primary walnut and/or hazelnut allergy and hypersensitive to both nuts were studied. IgE specific for rCor a 9, rCor a 14, and rJug r 1 was meas

Food allergy, an abnormal immunological response due to sensitization to a food component, has become an important health problem, especially in industrialized countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of thermal processing and glycation on the basophil activation by hazelnut proteins using a basophil activation test. Patients with systemic allergic reactions (SR; n=6) to hazelnut as well as patients with an isolated oral allergy syndrome (OAS; n=4) were investigated. Thermal processing of hazelnut proteins either in the presence or absence of wheat proteins did not result

Background/Objectives: Lipid transfer protein (LTP) syndrome is a leading cause of primary food allergy in Mediterranean countries, often associated with severe reactions. Due to in vitro cross-reactivity among plant foods, clinical manifestations are unpredictable, frequently requiring multiple oral food challenges (OFC) to assess nut tolerance. These procedures increase healthcare burden and patient anxiety. This study evaluated the safety and utility of a mixed-nut oral food challenge (MixNut) in LTP-sensitized patients. Methods: In this prospective observational multi-center study, patient

Food allergy is a common disease in our country, especially affecting atopic children. Egg-white hypersensitivity is frequently found in these patients. However, egg-yolk hypersensitivity is not usually reported in patients with egg allergy. This article describes a young patient with egg-yolk hypersensitivity, a 12 year old female patient with a medical history of contact urticaria, angioedema and severe acute bronchospasm shortly after the intake of small amounts of egg-yolk. All these episodes required treatment in emergency care units because of the severity of the symptoms. The patient di
