Obsessive compulsive disorder comorbidity in DBA.

Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is a congenital erythroid aplasia characterized as a normochromic macrocytic anemia with a selective deficiency in red blood cell precursors in otherwise normocelullar bone marrow. DBA is known to be associated with mental retardation and learning disabilities. Although comorbidities with other psychiatric conditions have not been reported in the existing literature, we report in this paper a case of a DBA patient with previously undiagnosed comorbidity of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), successfully treated with sertaline 200 mg/day and valproic acid 600 mg/

Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder are neuropsychiatric disorders that have sparked considerable interest over the decades. They are the focus of research for a remarkable diversity of disciplines, ranging from neuroimagers and prenatal epidemiologists to experts in the neural circuits that connect the cortex with the basal ganglia, as well as neuroimmunologists focusing on brain-based autoimmune phenomena. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the onset and exacerbation of these illnesses. Here, we discuss the clinical phenomenology and treatment options that ar

Behavioral inhibition and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Behavioral inhibition is frequently cited as a vulnerability factor for development of anxiety. However, few studies have examined the unique relationship between behavioral inhibition and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Therefore, the current study addressed the relationship between behavioral inhibition and OCD in a number of ways. In a large unselected student sample, frequency of current OC symptoms was significantly correlated with retrospective self-reports of total levels of childhood behavioral inhibition. In addition, frequency of current OC symptoms was also significantly correl

Obsessive-compulsive disorder in Tourette's syndrome.

A substantial body of scientific evidence suggests that obsessive-compulsive behavior occurs in a large percentage of patients with TS. Reliable estimates suggest that nearly 50% of patients with TS have some degree of obsessive-compulsive features. Most patients with TS have only mild OCB and thus would not meet the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for OCD. Therefore, OCB is perhaps a more appropriate characterization of this behavioral phenomenon that occurs in TS. OCB in TS appears similar to the spectrum of the tic disorder in terms of its onset, severity, and course. As with tics, OCB is typica

[Thought disorders in obsessive-compulsive disorder].

Obsessions are typical thought disorders in the obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), as defined in the DSM-IV and ICD-10. From obsessive ideas, overvalued ideas to delusional ones, there is a seriousness spectrum that is defined by the presence or absence of disease insight. Absence of disease insight can include global or partial functioning of the individual, but only the latter is contemplated in the DSM-IV since the fi rst case is diagnosed as <<psychotic disorder not otherwise specified>> or <<delusional disorder.>>. This article reports four cases with OCD diagnosis with the aim to illust

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Tourette's Syndrome.

Obsessive-compulsive behavior (OCB) or full-blown obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) afflict more than 50% of patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) and often are more debilitating than the tic disorder itself. Medications for OCD, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), help patients with TS and OCD, particularly in combination with low-dose antipsychotic drugs, but seldom eliminate OCD entirely. Behavioral therapies are more effective as medications for the treatment of OCD. A combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and medication is the treatment of choice for most p

Disgust implicated in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Psychiatric classificatory systems consider obsessions and compulsions as forms of anxiety disorder. However, the neurology of diseases associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms suggests the involvement of fronto-striatal regions likely to be involved in the mediation of the emotion of disgust, suggesting that dysfunctions of disgust should be considered alongside anxiety in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive behaviours. We therefore tested recognition of facial expressions of basic emotions (including disgust) by groups of participants with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and wi

Obsessive compulsive disorder--a neuropsychiatric illness.

Until recently, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) was thought to be a rare condition. Once viewed predominantly as a manifestation of psychodynamic conflict, OCD is now considered a model neuropsychiatric disorder. While clear differences exist between OCD patients and normal controls, there are more similarities between OCD and Tourette's Syndrome than most other neurotic disorders in neurological signs, electrophysiology and neuropsychology. These include a lack of laterality, bilateral or dominant (left) frontal lobe dysfunction, shortened REM latency in sleep electroencephalogram, shorte

The pharmacotherapy of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Potent inhibitors of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) reuptake have clearly been established as the first-line pharmacotherapy for treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although a variety of tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors have similar efficacy in the treatment of depression and panic disorder, potent blockade of 5-HT transport appears to be a prerequisite for effective treatment of OCD. Adding agents that enhance 5-HT neurotransmission to ongoing treatment in patients whose OCD is refractory to 5-HT reuptake inhibitors has not yielded impressive results. Howev

Obsessive compulsive disorder with psychotic features.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to systematically identify and characterize the demographic and clinical features of patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and psychotic symptoms. METHODS: From a total of 475 patients with DSM-III-R OCD evaluated and/or treated in an outpatient OCD clinic, 67 patients (14%) were identified as having psychotic symptoms in addition to OCD. Psychotic symptoms were defined as hallucinations, delusions, and/or thought disorder. Clinical and demographic data on these probands were collected from semistructured interviews and compared with data

Coexisting obsessive compulsive disorder and alcoholism.

Fifty patients with the diagnosis of alcohol dependence or abuse who were admitted to a university-based alcohol rehabilitation program were screened for obsessions and compulsions. Six percent (3) of the patients met DSM-III-R criteria for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which is three times the lifetime prevalence for OCD found in the general population. The diagnosis of OCD is easily overlooked, so screening questions should be asked of all alcoholics during the routine clinical interview. Identifying those patients with dual diagnoses is important because treatment of the underlying O

Personality features of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The authors evaluated personality dysfunction in 23 patients with primary obsessive-compulsive disorder and an age- and sex-matched group of patients with major depressive disorder. There were no significant differences between the two patient groups with respect to mean personality trait scores or the frequency or type of personality disorder diagnosis. A mixed personality disorder with avoidant, dependent, and passive-aggressive features was most commonly observed in the obsessive-compulsive group. There was a very low frequency of schizoid or compulsive personality disorder.

Panic attacks followed sodium lactate infusions in one of seven patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and 26 of 48 patients with panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks. This suggests that lactate-induced panic is specific to the latter groups.

Nutraceuticals and obsessive-compulsive disorder therapy.

Neurological disorders are a major public health concern. Notably, the rate of chronic neurological diseases is affected by lifestyle changes, leading to considerable health-care and economic burden worldwide. Considerable interest has emerged on functional foods due to their beneficial health efficacy. Thus, efforts have been made to extract different bioactive phytochemicals or compounds from therapeutic natural-based products, which has led to functional foods referred to as "vitafoods,""medifoods," "pharmafoods," or "medicinal foods." To overcome neurological illness such as obsessive-comp

[Obsessive-compulsive disorder and eating disorders].

This review finds that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders share significant epidemiological and psychopathological similarities, entailing diagnostic challenges and potential for delayed treatment. Recent research suggests that several biological features are also shared between the diseases. However, further research is needed to explore this connection in more detail. Clinicians must identify the psychopathological features to ensure accurate diagnosis and outcome.

Scrupulosity Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Children.

It is important for psychiatric-mental health nurses and advanced practice nurses to be familiar with clinical presentations and recommended treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adolescents. The current article provides a brief overview of symptom presentation, diagnostic criteria, etiology, comorbidity, and prevalence in this population. Special attention is given to one of the lesser-known clinical presentations, scrupulosity. A scrupulosity theme entails intrusive thoughts that center around a religious, ethical, and/or moral framework. A vignette is provided to
