A comparison of ethanol concentrations in the occipital lobe and cerebellum.

While many publications have addressed the issue of ethanol concentration in brain tissue as a better indicator of impairment than blood alcohol concentration (BAC), very few have looked at the regional distribution of ethanol in the brain and its possible significance in postmortem sampling. This paper reports on the analysis of occipital pole and cerebellar hemisphere for ethanol in 25/brain samples obtained at autopsy from the brain collection of the National Institutes of Mental Health/Stanley Foundation. When available, these concentrations were compared to BAC. The average ratio of occip

Occipital lobe's cortical thinning in ametropic amblyopia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The present study was designed to detect the abnormalities of the cortical thickness in children with ametropic amblyopia by a computer-aided MRI technique. METHODS: Nine children with ametropic amblyopia and eight age-matched normal controls underwent MRI brain scanning that was performed on a Siemens Avanto 1.5-T scanner, and standard T(1)-weighted high-resolution anatomic scans of magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequence were obtained. For the cortical thickness analysis, 3D MPRAGE images were processed with FreeSurfer software package (http://ww

Double dissociation of memory capacities after bilateral occipital-lobe or medial temporal-lobe lesions.

Memory for recently encountered information can be reflected in conscious recall and recognition of that material, or in facilitated reprocessing of that material, an effect known as repetition priming. Repetition priming may be perceptual (form-based) or conceptual (meaning-based). A patient with bilateral occipital-lobe lesions (L.H.) and a patient with bilateral medial-temporal lobe lesions (H.M.) showed a double dissociation between visuoperceptual priming (impaired in L.H. and intact in H.M.) and visual recognition memory (intact in L.H. and impaired in H.M.). L.H. showed intact conceptua

N170 asymmetry as an index of inferior occipital dysfunction in patients with symptomatic occipital lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Localizing epileptic foci in posterior brain epilepsy remains a difficult exercise in surgery for epilepsy evaluation. Neither clinical manifestations, neurological, EEG nor neuropsychological evaluations provide strong information about the area of onset, and fast spread of paroxysms often produces mixed features of occipital, temporal and parietal symptoms. We investigated the usefulness of the N170 event-related potential to map epileptic activity in these patients. METHODS: A group of seven patients with symptomatic posterior cortex epilepsy were submitted to a high-resolution

Glymphatic system dysfunction in patients with occipital lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the glymphatic system function in patients with occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) and healthy controls using diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index. METHODS: We retrospectively included 23 patients with OLE and 30 healthy controls. The participants underwent brain MRI, which was normal, and diffusion tensor imaging. We used the DSI Studio for data preprocessing, obtained the fiber orientation and diffusivities, and calculated the DTI-ALPS index from the diffusivity values associated with the projection and asso

MRI-Negative Occipital Lobe Epilepsy Presenting as Gelastic Seizures.

Although gelastic seizures (GSs) with extrahypothalamic epileptogenic zones such as the frontal, temporal, or parietal lobes have been previously reported, reports of GSs arising from the occipital region are rare. Herein, we describe the seizure propagation pattern of mirthless GSs confirmed by intracranial EEG in a case of MRI-negative occipital lobe epilepsy. In this patient, EEG onset was localized to the right occipital lobe while the onset of laughter coincided with seizure propagation to the right basal temporal region. This finding suggested that the symptomatogenic area for GSs in the

Severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia induces temporal and occipital lobe seizures.

To examine the origin of seizures induced by severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, The EEG characteristics of seizures were analyzed in newborns with and without severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Fisher's exact test was used to determine the specificity. In total, 931 patients had a total serum bilirubin (TSB) level of 340-425 μmol/L, only 2 of whom had seizures. Compared to patients with hyperbilirubinemia and a TSB level of 340-425 μmol/L, those with a TSB level >425 μmol/L had a significant risk of seizure (OR = 213.2, 95% CI = 113.0-405.8, P<0.001). Of all 28 patients with severe hyperbili

Widespread temporo-occipital lobe dysfunction in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Recent studies suggest that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) lie on a single clinical continuum. However, previous neuroimaging studies have found only limited involvement of temporal lobe regions in ALS. To better delineate possible temporal lobe involvement in ALS, the present study aimed to examine changes in functional connectivity across the whole brain, particularly with regard to extra-motor regions, in a group of 64 non-demented ALS patients and 38 healthy controls. To assess between-group differences in connectivity, we computed edge-level statisti

Epilepsy classification and additional definitions in occipital lobe epilepsy.

AIM: To evaluate epileptic children with occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) in the light of the characteristics of Panayiotopoulos syndrome and late-onset occipital lobe epilepsy of Gastaut (OLE-G). METHODS: Patients were categorized into six groups: primary OLE with autonomic symptoms (Panayiotopoulos syndrome), primary OLE with visual symptoms (OLE-G), secondary OLE with autonomic symptoms (P-type sOLE), secondary OLE with visual symptoms (G-type sOLE), and non-categorized primary OLE and non-categorized secondary OLE according to characteristic ictal symptoms of both Panayiotopoulos syndrome an

Benign occipital lobe seizures: Natural progression and atypical evolution.

Benign occipital seizure syndromes are benign childhood epilepsy syndromes and are mainly of two types, Panayiotopoulos syndrome, an autonomic epilepsy and idiopathic childhood occipital epilepsy of Gastaut (ICOE-G) including the idiopathic photosensitive occipital lobe epilepsy. Although both these types are categorized as occipital seizures, they are distinct in presentation and management. They can also be tricky to diagnose as visual symptoms may not always be the presenting feature and it is also not very easy to elicit visual hallucinations during history taking. These seizures have a go

Occipital lobe epilepsy with fear as leading ictal symptom.

Ictal fear is a semiological feature which is commonly associated with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Here, we describe fear as a leading symptom in cryptogenic occipital lobe epilepsy. In a patient with negative MRI findings, intracranial EEG recordings documented a strict correlation between habitual ictal anxiety attacks and both spontaneous and stimulation-induced epileptic activity in a right occipital epileptogenic area with subsequent spreading to the symptomatogenic zone in the amygdala. Circumscribed occipital topectomy led to seizure freedom. Episodes of non-epileptic fear ceased sho

Occipital lobe tumor presenting as migraine with typical aura.

We report the case of a 60-year-old woman in whom migraine with typical aura heralded the presence of an occipital lobe tumor. Her headache was characterized by recurrent episodes of visual aura confined to the left visual field followed by right hemicranial throbbing headaches accompanied by nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia. Interictal neurologic and ophthalmologic examinations were negative, as was an unenhanced brain CT scan. The headaches increased in frequency over 4 months despite a number of medications known to prevent attacks of migraine. A low-grade right occipital lobe tumor was

[A case of occipital lobe epilepsy following cerebral infarction].

We report a rare case of occipital lobe epilepsy following cerebral infarction in bilateral occipital lobes. The patient is a seventeen-year-old female, who had cerebral infarction in bilateral occipital regions a few days after an open-heart surgery at 15 years of age. Thereafter she sometimes complained of visual field defects and ictal amaurosis. Seventeen months later, she developed a tonic seizure with ictal amaurosis, visual field defects and head deviation. On admission, results of the neurological examinations were all normal with the exception of peripheral visual field defects. Scalp
