RESULTS: Fifty-nine member organisations from five world regions responded, 33 (55.9%) representing high-income countries. Activities of daily living was the most addressed a

"If you want to work, let's work out how to make this happen": An interpretive description study of occupational therapists' perspectives of supporting young adults experiencing psychosis with their employment.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults experiencing psychosis want to work but most of them do not, even though success in employment and careers is possible. Occupational therapists are ideally placed to support young adults experiencing psychosis with employment, but evidence on contemporary occupational therapy practice in this area is lacking. This study asked occupational therapists who work with young people experiencing psychosis to share their perspectives about employment support. METHOD: An interpretive description study design was used with data collected through a focus group of expert inform

Occupational Risks and Exposures Among Wildlife Health Professionals.

Most emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic in origin, with wildlife a frequent source of zoonotic disease events. Although individuals with extensive wildlife contact may be at the greatest risk of contracting novel infectious agents, the occupational risk of those working closely with wildlife has not been well studied. This study assessed the occupational exposures among wildlife health professionals working in multiple countries worldwide. An occupational risk survey of past and present exposures was developed and administered online in a confidential manner to wildlife workers recruite

Occupational health in Brazil.

Brazil is a recently industrialised country with marked contrasts in social and economic development. The availability of public/private services in its different regions also varies. Health indicators follow these trends. Occupational health is a vast new field, as in other developing countries. Occupational medicine is a required subject in graduation courses for physicians. Specialisation courses for university graduated professionals have more than 700 hours of lectures and train occupational health physicians, safety engineers and nursing staff. At the technical level, there are courses w

'To Awaken the Medical and Hygienic Conscience of the People': Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship through Free Public Healthcare in Haiti from 1915-34.

This paper addresses the relative scholarly oversight of the history of public health in Haiti through a close examination of the colonial public health system constructed and operated by the United States (US) during its occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. More than simply documenting a neglected aspect of Caribbean history, the paper offers the US occupation of Haiti as a remarkably clear example of a failed attempt to use a free public health service to cultivate a health conscientiousness among the Haitian citizenry through the aggressive treatment of highly visible ailments such as cat

Occupational safety and health: progress toward the 1990 objectives for the nation.

Occupational safety and health is 1 of 15 areas addressed in the Public Health Service's Objectives for the Nation. This area represents 104 million working men and women and the deaths, diseases, and injuries that result from exposures to hazards in their work environment. Characteristics of public health practice are compared with characteristics of occupational safety and health practice. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), created by the Occupational Safety and Health Act, is discussed. NIOSH has developed a list of 10 leading work-related diseases and injuri

Outcomes for children and adolescents with Juvenile idiopathic arthritis addressed by occupational therapy services in specialist rheumatology clinics in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: International guidelines for best practice indicate specialised treatment is required for Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). While occupational therapy intervention for functional limitations in this chronic condition is conditionally recommended, the extent to which this is provided in public specialist rheumatology clinics in South Africa is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine which needs related to outcomes for occupational performance or functional status, condition-related factors and health-related quality of life, reported by children and adolescents with JIA

Profile of occupational therapy services in non-urban settings: A global scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Regional, rural, and remote people represent nearly half the world's population yet experience disproportionally higher disease, mortality, and disability rates, coupled with limited healthcare access. Occupational therapy has committed to occupational justice, yet no descriptive framework of services provided by occupational therapists in non-urban locations exists. Understanding current non-urban service practices will provide a basis for non-urban service development and research to reduce this inequity. METHODS: Four databases were systematically searched for publications de

[Shoemaker's vibration disease].

Exposure to vibration at work with associated health hazards is rather common. Severe symptoms can significantly impair working and functional capacity, whereby occupational health services should invest in the primary and secondary prevention of vibration-induced handicaps. Patients with work-related numbness of the fingers and Raynaud's syndrome should be referred to occupational health service. We describe a shoe worker diagnosed with occupational disease caused by vibration. His profession and way of exposure are unusual, but the symptoms are typical for vibration disease.

The unique health needs of young women: application for occupational health professionals.

This article presents some alternate views on how young women maintain health and how occupational health nurses can intervene with illness. These interventions are based on relational theories that address the importance of healthy connections for health and growth, and propose disconnections as what (Miller & Stiver, 1977): underlies many of the problems common to women in particular, including depression, various forms of anxiety, eating problems, and so-called personality disorders." Occupational hazards in female ballet dancers. Advocate for a forgotten population.

1. Personal, economical, psychological, and physical factors increase a ballet dancer's stress, which can result in a higher risk for injuries. 2. Ballet dancers experience injuries to the foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back. The constant fear of injuries is universal among dancers because injuries can lead to permanent disability and the end of their ballet career. 3. Although early treatment of injuries is critical, there are multiple barriers to receiving treatment. Some of the barriers include misunderstanding from the health care community, cost of treatment, time constraints, fear of unemplo

An audit of TB prevention on Italian health care workers.

Tuberculosis (TB) is considered an occupational disease in health care workers. The aim of this study is to asses the state of tuberculosis prevention among the personnel of the Vaccination Services of the Puglia Region (Italy), who were given an interview-based standardised questionnaire. Of the 302 replies, TB screening had been undergone by 80.5%, whom 78.6% took advice by the occupational health physician. Of those who were negative to the PPD skin test, 60.6% had received BCG, whom 78% took vaccination advice by the occupational health physician. In Italy, the procedures for the monitorin

Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Home Health Use Among People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Measuring Their Association With Neighborhood Racial Segregation.

IMPORTANCE: Black people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) report poor health and lower service use compared with their White counterparts. Structural racism, neighborhood segregation in particular, has been identified as a potential barrier to equitable service use, but empirical investigations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between race/ethnicity and neighborhood-level segregation on the use of outpatient occupational therapy and physical therapy and home health services among people with IDD. Utilization of physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy by children and adolescents in Germany. Results of the cross-sectional KiGGS Wave 2 study and trends.

Allied health services such as physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy contribute to the early treatment of health disorders in children and adolescents and promote a healthy development. This article describes the utilization of these allied health services by children and adolescents in Germany and analyses its association with demographic and social factors. The analyses are based on the second wave of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS Wave 2, 2014-2017) including 15,023 participants. Trends are calculated in comparison
