[Orthostatic intolerance--prevalence, diagnostic management and its significance for occupational medicine].

OBJECTIVE: Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is a syndrome which is characterised by headache, concentration difficulties, palpitation of the heart, dizziness associated with postural tachycardia and plasma norepinephrine concentrations that are disportionately high in upright posture. OI hitherto can only be diagnosed by a tilt table examination with high expenditure. In this paper we examine the reliability and validity of a questionnaire as a screening instrument for OI. METHODS: We studied 138 young males (mean age 21.6 years) from the military service. After a medical check and filling in the

[Malignant diseases of the inner nose--epidemiology and occupational medicine aspects].

Squamous cell carcinomas are the most frequent malignancies of the inner nose, followed by adenocarcinomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, and other malignant neoplasms. Carcinomas of the nose can be recognized as occupational diseases if there has been a professional exposition to ionizing rays, certain arsenic compounds, hexavalent chrome compounds, nickel, oak or beech wood dust. The sources of danger relevant in industrial medicine are indicated. At present, adenocarcinomas induced by dust of wood are of special significance: 16 out of 22 carcinomas of the nose recognized as occupational disea

[Causes of occupational allergy in dental nurses. An analysis based on the material collected at The Institute of Occupational Medicine in Lódź].

The causes of occupational dermatosis were analysed in 27 dental nurses examined at The Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine during the years 1995-99. Contact sensitisation (at least one positive epidermal test) was found in 18 subjects (66.7%). Occupational allergic dermatitis was induced most frequently by: glutaraldehyde (7 positive patch tests), nickel (7), benzalkonium (4), formaldehyde (4), fragrances (4), chromium compounds (3), glyoxal (3), and thiuram (3). In the authors' opinion, dental nurses are nowadays sensitised to other chemical compounds than it used to be in the past. The

Monitoring of occupational exposure to hazardous medicinal products in robotic compounding.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the risk of occupational exposure to hazardous medicinal products (HMPs) when utilising robotic compounding systems for the preparation of antineoplastic sterile medications. Specifically, it assesses the levels of HMPs present on the surfaces of ready-to-use preparations and on the gloves worn by personnel involved in the compounding process. METHODS: The study was conducted over three consecutive days during routine production with a robotic compounding system. Each day, wipe samples were collected from the surfaces of 20 HMPs preparations and from the

Injuries of the foot and ankle in occupational medicine: a 1-year study.

With occupational injuries, both the employee and employer are impaired by monetary or physical damages. Administrative and clinical data can assist in identifying risks for these injuries. While musculoskeletal injuries are well known, foot and ankle injuries are not as frequently described as back and hand injuries. Changes in the workplace may then be implemented dependent on the risk factors identified. A retrospective study was completed on all foot and ankle injuries that were reported to the Oakwood Hospital Downriver Center Occupational Medicine Clinics over 1 year. Of 3851 new injurie

UK audit of variation in nuclear medicine occupational exposure calculations in 2021.

It is a core requirement of UK ionising radiations regulations 2017 (IRR17) compliance for radiation risk assessments and the investigation of accidental exposure scenarios that the magnitude of doses likely to be encountered are evaluated. A novel national audit was undertaken to investigate the variation in dose estimations for a range of foreseeable accidental exposure scenarios in nuclear medicine (NM). Participants were asked to estimate the levels of exposure in 15 foreseeable scenarios; covering whole-body and extremity exposures from external sources, internal exposure and exposures fr

[Bronchopulmonary precancerous conditions and tumors--risk groups from the occupational medicine viewpoint].

Risk groups with regard to bronchopulmonary precancerous and tumor diseases of occupational origin can be deduced from current occupational disease statistics. Most prominent are those working with asbestos. Each year about 250 asbestos-associated bronchial carcinomas and 400 mesotheliomas are recognized and compensated; the tendency is increasing. Because of the long latency time, the frequency peak will probably be reached in about 15 years in spite of the prohibition of asbestos usage. The second place is probably taken by malignomas among the underground uranium mine workers in Thuringia a

[Rubella, measles, mumps--epidemiologic, occupational medicine significance and efficacy of adult vaccination].

A total of 437, 565 and 1.642 sera collected from personnel of Freiburg university hospital were tested for antibodies to measles, mumps and German measles. Susceptibility was found in about 10-30% of all cases. 107 persons were vaccinated. Seroconversions could be demonstrated in 80% (mumps) and 95.5% (German measles) of sera collected upon vaccination. Our results clearly demonstrate that mumps, measles, and German measles cannot be regarded as "childhood diseases" and hospital personnel is at increased infection risk.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in a nuclear medicine department: myth and reality.

Nuclear medicine is a diagnostic and therapeutic medical specialty based on the administration of radiopharmaceuticals emitting ionizing radiation (IR). In this context, healthcare professionals are exposed to low doses of radiation during their activity. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of occupational exposures in nuclear medicine in France, based on data from the 2023 IRSN and 2024 ASN reports, and to put them into perspective with those of other medical or industrial sectors, as well as with natural background exposure. Occupational exposures in nuclear medicine remain ve

[Medicinal products in the treatment and prevention of occupational diseases of the upper respiratory tract].

Occupational diseases of the upper respiratory tract (URT) represent a significant section of occupational pathology of the respiratory system, since the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is the outpost that first comes into contact with inhaled agents (pollutants), including professional aerosols. The pathogenesis of occupational diseases of URT is based on long-term contact of pollutants with cells of the scintillating epithelium and violation of the function of the mucociliary system of URT. Occupational diseases of URT include: chronic catarrhal, subatrophic, atroph
