Obesity among Health-Care Workers: Which Occupations Are at Higher Risk of Being Obese?

Obesity among health-care workers (HCWs) is an important issue as it can affect both their health condition and their professional capability. Although adult obesity is attributable to occupational factors, few reports are available on Malaysian health-care workers' obesity and whether different health-care job categories are related to workers' obesity. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity among HCWs and the association between various HCW job categories and obesity. A cross-sectional study was conducted by analyzing secondary data from the 2019 annual cardiovascular health

High occurrence of transportation and logistics occupations among vascular dementia patients: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests a role of occupation in the emergence and manifestation of dementia. Occupations are often defined by complexity level, although working environments and activities differ in several other important ways. We aimed to capture the multi-faceted nature of occupation through its measurement as a qualitative (instead of a quantitative) variable and explored its relationship with different types of dementia. METHODS: We collected occupational information of 2121 dementia patients with various suspected etiologies from the Amsterdam Dementia Cohort (age 67 ± 8,

Physiological Implications, Performance Assessment and Risk Mitigation Strategies of Women in Combat-Centric Occupations.

Women have historically featured in military conflicts, but were not formally integrated into the military until the 20th century; occupations were mainly restricted to clerical or support roles. An increasing number of occupations have been opened to women and the higher physical demands of combat roles present new challenges. Inherent biological differences between sexes require women to work harder when undertaking the same tasks as men. This is reflected, in part, by the greater risk of musculoskeletal injuries of women observed notably during integrated military training. Gender "neutral"

Performance requirements of physically strenuous occupations: validating minimum standards for muscular strength and endurance.

Employment rights legislative mandates passed in the USA over the last three decades emphasize the importance of validating performance standards for physically strenuous occupations. This study validated minimally acceptable standards for the muscular strength and endurance necessary to perform fire suppression activities. Incumbent firefighters (n=153) selected for key demographic characteristics completed a simulated set of firefighting tasks (Fire Suppression Evolution) and then a Predictor Test Battery of physical abilities tests. Regression analysis revealed that three predictor test ite

Biochemical indicators of metabolic poisoning associated with lead based occupations in nutritionally disadvantaged communities.

The biochemical alterations that occur in chronic lead exposure were studied in 86 males who were occupationally exposed to the metal. The biochemical indices investigated were blood lead, total and ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate, total protein and albumin, uric acid and 1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25] (OH2 D3]. Serum total and ionized calcium levels and 1,25 [OH2] D3 were significantly lower in lead workers than in the control population (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis showed an important relationship between blood lead and serum calcium. Uric a

Farming occupations and mortality from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Utah. A case-control study.

The association between farming occupations and the incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) was examined in a case-control study using a cancer registry to identify cases and controls and death certificates to determine the occupation and industry of employment of cancer patients. Case subjects were white males with a diagnosis of NHL who died between 1967 and 1982; control subjects were white males who died of colon cancer during the same period. Control and case subjects were frequency-matched for age and year of diagnosis; county of residence was not a matching variable. Death certificate

Cervicobrachial disorders in certain occupations, with special reference to compression in the thoracic outlet.

One hundred ninety-one workers in three different occupations were examined regarding presence of symptoms from the cervicobrachial region. Eighteen percent of the workers (27% of the female and 11% of the male workers) had symptoms of compression in the thoracic outlet. However, only 2% of all workers had pronounced symptoms of compression in the thoracic outlet. In addition, 27% of the workers (33% of the female and 23% of the male workers) had symptoms of other cervicobrachial disorders. Thus, 45% of the workers had symptoms from the cervicobrachial region. The workers with symptoms of comp

SARS-CoV-2 infection risk by non-healthcare occupations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, several industries were deemed essential. However, information on infection risk in occupational settings outside of healthcare workers and medical staff (HCWs) remain scarce. Thus, a systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to compile the risk of infection to SARS-CoV-2 in non-healthcare workers (non-HCWs). METHODS: We screened three databases (EMBASE, PubMed, medRχiv) for studies on SARS-CoV-2 infection risk in working population. Several stages of severity (infection, hospitalisation, admission to intensive care unit (ICU), mortality) wer
