Ocular parasitosis: a rare cause of hypertensive uveitis.

A middle-aged Asian gentleman presented with four weeks' history of recurrent redness, pain and deterioration of vision in his right eye. He was diagnosed with chronic, unilateral, granulomatous hypertensive uveitis. During one of the serial examinations a single, off-white, extremely motile, thread-like worm about 15 mm long was noted in the anterior chamber. Surgical retrieval of the worm was unsuccessful. The worm disappeared in the eye and was never seen again. Patient suffered from chronic waxing and waning granulomatous inflammation with uncontrolled high intraocular pressure despite tre

Metabolic Syndrome Is Associated With Ocular Hypertension and Glaucoma.

Glaucoma remains the world's leading cause of irreversible blindness and though intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most prevalent risk factor and only reliable therapeutic target, a number of systemic disease associations have been reported. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a constellation of findings that includes systemic hypertension, abdominal obesity, glucose intolerance, and dyslipidemia. MetS is becoming increasingly common worldwide, with prevalence up to 40% in some countries. Not only is MetS a significant cause of morbidity, but it is also associated with an increase in all-cause mortali

Changes in optic disc in ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

Most ophthalmologists use subjective methods to evaluate the optic disc for abnormalities and changes that occur in ocular hypertension and glaucoma. We have developed new techniques that allow more accurate evaluation of the blood supply to the optic disc and of changes in disc cupping and pallor. To evaluate the blood supply we use the technique of fluorescein angiography of the optic disc. With this technique, we have found that fluorescein defects commonly appear in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension and are more frequent and larger in glaucomatous and ocular hypertensive discs th

Timolol in maintenance treatment of ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

The hypotensive effect of Timolol eye drops (0.25 and 0.50%) in maintenance treatment of 64 patients with elevated intraocular pressure has been studied. The patients were treated for a period of mean 13 months. In 44 patients mostly comprising ocular hypertensives, a significant reducation in IOP (32%) could be maintained with Timolol alone (P less than 0.001). In patients with a high starting baseline pressure of previous maladjustable glaucoma it was necessary to start combined treatment. Pilocarpine, epinephrine or acetazolamide appeared to have additive pressure-lowering effect to Timolol

Ocular pulse amplitude in patients with open angle glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, and ocular hypertension.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intraocular pressure (IOP) is not a fixed constant value but rather has pulsatile components associated with cardiac action. The SmartLens dynamic observing tonometer (odc, Ophthalmic Development Company AG, Zurich, Switzerland) can measure and record simultaneously IOP and ocular pulse amplitude (OPA). It was the aim of this study to evaluate OPA in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and high IOP, normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and ocular hypertension (OHT). Furthermore, the authors examined whether there were any correlations with blood pressure. METHODS: 80 su
