Mosquitocidal Susceptibility and Non-Target Effects of Tricholoma equestre Mushroom (Agaricomycetes) on the Immature Stages of Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi and Culex quinquefasciatus.

The worldwide scientific community is well aware that mosquitoes are the sole agents responsible for transmitting various dreadful diseases and critical illnesses caused by vector-borne pathogens. The primary objective of this current research was to evaluate the effectiveness of methanol extract from Tricholoma equestre mushroom in controlling the early life stages of Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Anopheles stephensi Liston, and Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus in Hasselquist) mosquitoes. The larvae, pupae and eggs of these mosquitoes were exposed to four different concentrations (62.5 to 500 ppm). Afte

Structural biofilm resistance of carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube coatings.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication of orthopedic implant surgeries, such as total knee and hip arthroplasties. Treatment requires additional surgeries because antibiotics have limited efficacy due to biofilm formation and resistant bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A non-pharmaceutical approach is needed, and examples of this are found in nature; dragonfly and cicada wings are antibacterial because of their nanopillar surface structure rather than their chemistry. Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CICNT) surfaces exh

Detecting local adaptation under weak genetic structure in an endemic damselfly: an integrative eco-evolutionary approach.

BACKGROUND: Insects comprise one of Earth's most diverse animal groups, but the adaptive capacity of most species, especially those with weak genetic structure, remains understudied. Psolodesmus mandarinus is an endemic damselfly in Taiwan, where its populations show latitudinal variation in wing traits despite limited genetic differentiation in mitochondrial and ribosomal sequences. We hypothesised that weak genome-wide structure may obscure the signals of local adaptation driven by environmental variation. To test this, we integrated genome-wide SNPs, phenotypic measurements, environmental a

The Alteration of Life History Traits and Increased Success of Halipegus eccentricus Through the Use of a Paratenic Host: A Comparative Study.

Complex life cycles are a hallmark characteristic of many parasites; however, little is known about the process by which life cycles become more complex through the addition of hosts. Paratenic hosts are present in the life cycles of several phylogenetically distinct groups of helminths; this suggests that they may play a key role during this process. This study examined the development of metacercariae of Halipegus eccentricus within intermediate microcrustacean and odonate paratenic hosts. Then a comparative approach was used to evaluate how life history traits of H. eccentricus within the a

New record and diet of a poorly known frog, Amolops daorum (Amphibia, Anura) from Vietnam.

As a result of our field surveys, a new population of the Dao Frog, Amolops daorum (Bain, Lathrop, Murphy, Orlov & Ho, 2003), was found in Son La Province, northern Vietnam, and its identification was based on molecular and morphological analyses. To date, knowledge about the natural history of this species is scarce, including data on its dietary ecology. Using the stomach-flushing method, we analyzed stomach contents of 132 individuals (81 males and 51 females) of A. daorum. We found 501 prey items (458 invertebrates, one vertebrate, and 15 unidentified items), belonging to 11 insect orders

Little bits of dragonfly history repeating exemplified by a new Pennsylvanian family.

During its 320 Myr evolution, dragon- and damselfly (Odonata) wing morphology underwent intense modifications. The resulting diversity prompted comparative analyses focusing on phylogeny. However, homoplasy proved to plague wing-related characters. Concurrently, limited benefits were obtained from considering fossil taxa, similarly impacted. Herein, we investigate two aspects particularly affected by convergence, namely the acquisition of vein-like structuring elements derived from regular cross-venation, termed conamina; and the evolution of butter knife wing shape. Conamen implementation is

Non-destructive sampling of larval amphibians shows tail tissues reflect whole-body methylmercury concentrations and trophic-related differences in bioaccumulation.

Mercury (Hg), and specifically methylmercury (MeHg), is a contaminant of global concern to humans and wildlife, but there is still limited understanding of its effects on many taxa. Amphibians are closely associated with water, where Hg is converted to MeHg, and high concentrations of MeHg can reduce survival of amphibians in the wild. However, limited non-lethal proxies exist for estimating MeHg bioaccumulation in amphibian larvae, which could be used to reduce destructive sampling and allow sampling of imperiled species. We evaluated whether tail clips were indicative of whole-body MeHg conc

Mercury trophic transfer to a freshwater biosentinel: quantifying controlled bioaccumulation in larval dragonflies.

Mercury bioavailability and biomagnification in freshwater systems can be highly variable; thus, tissue data from biosentinel taxa can be useful to assess risk. Dragonfly larvae have emerged as biological indicators of mercury impairment, yet their mercury biodynamics over time and across exposure levels are not well understood. Evaluating these attributes using controlled experimental approaches is an important step to validate larval dragonflies as biosentinels for spatial and temporal trends in mercury risk. We conducted an experimental series quantifying methylmercury trophic transfer from

An optimized IL-12-Fc expands its therapeutic window, achieving strong activity against mouse tumors at tolerable drug doses.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-12 (IL-12) has emerged as one of the most potent cytokines for tumor immunotherapy due to its ability to induce interferon γ (IFNγ) and polarize Th1 responses. Clinical use of IL-12 has been limited by a short half-life and narrow therapeutic index. METHODS: We generated a monovalent, half-life-extended IL-12-Fc fusion protein, mDF6006, engineered to retain the high potency of native IL-12 while significantly expanding its therapeutic window. In vitro and in vivo activity of mDF6006 was tested against murine tumors. To translate our findings, we developed a fully human

Habitat and dissolved organic carbon modulate variation in the biogeochemical drivers of mercury bioaccumulation in dragonfly larvae at the national scale.

We paired mercury (Hg) concentrations in dragonfly larvae with water chemistry in 29 U.S. national parks to highlight how ecological and biogeochemical context (habitat, dissolved organic carbon [DOC]) influence drivers of Hg bioaccumulation. Although prior studies have defined influences of biogeochemical variables on Hg production and bioaccumulation, it has been challenging to determine their influence across diverse habitats, regions, or biogeochemical conditions within a single study. We compared global (i.e., all sites), habitat-specific, and DOC-class models to illuminate how these cont

Expression of Genes Involved in Offensive and Defensive Phenotype Induction in the Pituitary Gland of the Hokkaido Salamander (Hynobius retardatus).

Amphibians exhibit phenotypic plasticity, which allows flexible adaptation to fluctuating environments. Although genes involved in expression of plastic phenotypes have been identified, the endocrine bases of plastic responses are largely unknown. Larvae of the Hokkaido salamander (Hynobius retardatus) plastically display distinct phenotypes, an "offensive phenotype" characterized as larger body with broadened gape and a "defensive phenotype" characterized as enlarged gills and tail and less active behavior, in the presence of prey larval amphibians and predatory larval dragonfly, respectively

Asymmetry in the jet opening: underwater jet vectoring mechanism by dragonfly larvae.

Aquatic Anisopteran dragonfly larvae achieve respiration and propulsion by repetitive water jets flowing through their anal openings. Previous studies have shown that the tri-leaflet anal valves modulate the emerging jet by varying the opening size. We discovered that the valves are also capable of controlling the opening asymmetry by independent retraction of a leaflet. This study shows the effects of their valve asymmetry control on the respiratory and propulsive flows. Furthermore, the effects of size variation are re-evaluated using fluid momentum and power equations. Synchronized dual cam

Methylmercury-total mercury ratios in predator and primary consumer insects from Adirondack streams (New York, USA).

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that affects biota in remote settings due to atmospheric deposition of inorganic Hg, and its conversion to methylmercury (MeHg), the bioaccumulating and toxic form. Characterizing biotic MeHg is important for evaluating aquatic ecosystem responses to changes in Hg inputs. Aquatic insects possess many qualities desired for MeHg biomonitoring, but are not widely used, largely because of limited information regarding percentages of total mercury (THg) composed of MeHg (i.e., MeHg%) in various taxa. Here, we examine taxonomic, spatial, and seasonal variation in M

A freestanding submicron electrocorticography electrode array.

Electrocorticography electrode arrays (EEAs) are key brain-computer interfaces. To be freestanding, which lays the foundation of fabrication and implantation, EEAs need to maintain sufficient rigidity. However, to form seamless and damage-free contact on the cerebral cortex, EEAs should be super-flexible, raising a seemingly unsolvable dilemma. Here, inspired by dragonfly wings, we present a freestanding submicron EEA (fs-EEA) that combines rigidity and flexibility, which are typically mutually exclusive characteristics. A wing vein-like frame is introduced to enable the freestanding capabilit

Adult damselflies as possible regulators of mosquito populations in urban areas.

BACKGROUND: Dragonfly and damselfly larvae have been considered as possible biocontrol agents against young instars of mosquito vectors in urban environments. Yet our knowledge about adult odonate predation against mosquito adults is scarce. We quantified daily and annual predation rates, consumption rates and prey preferences of adult Hetaerina vulnerata male damselflies in an urban park. A focus on predation of mosquito species was provided, quantified their arbovirus (dengue, chikungunya and Zika) infection rates and biting activity. RESULTS: Foraging times of H. vulnerata overlapped with

Musculoskeletal modelling of the dragonfly mandible system as an aid to understanding the role of single muscles in an evolutionary context.

Insects show a great variety of mouthpart and muscle configurations; however, knowledge of their mouthpart kinematics and muscle activation patterns is fragmentary. Understanding the role of muscle groups during movement and comparing them between insect groups could yield insights into evolutionary patterns and functional constraints. Here, we developed a mathematical inverse dynamic model including distinct muscles for an insect head-mandible-muscle complex based on micro-computed tomography (µCT) data and bite force measurements. With the advent of µCT, it is now possible to obtain precise

High-speed imaging reveals how antihistamine exposure affects escape behaviours in aquatic insect prey.

Aquatic systems receive a wide range of pharmaceuticals that may have adverse impacts on aquatic wildlife. Among these pharmaceuticals, antihistamines are commonly found, and these substances have the potential to influence the physiology of aquatic invertebrates. Previous studies have focused on how antihistamines may affect behaviours of aquatic invertebrates, but these studies probably do not capture the full consequences of antihistamine exposure, as traditional recording techniques do not capture important animal movements occurring at the scale of milliseconds, such as prey escape respon

A review of applications and limitations of using aquatic macroinvertebrate predators for biocontrol of the African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae sensu lato.

Macroinvertebrate predators such as backswimmers (Heteroptera: Notonectidae), dragonflies (Odonata: Aeshnidae), and predatory diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) naturally inhabit aquatic ecosystems. Some aquatic ecosystems inhabited by these macroinvertebrate predator taxa equally form malaria vector larval habitats. The presence of these predators in malaria vector larval habitats can negatively impact on development, adult body size, fecundity, and longevity of the malaria vectors, which form important determinants of their fitness and future vectorial capacity. These potential negative

Larval stages of Neoplagioporus elongatus (Goto and Ozaki, 1930) (Opecoelidae: Plagioporinae), with notes on potential second intermediate hosts.

The morphology of sporocysts and cercariae of Neoplagioporus elongatus (Goto and Ozaki, 1930) is described for the first time. A cotylomicrocercous cercaria obtained from the sorbeoconch snail Semisulcospira nakasekoae was confirmed to be the cercaria of N. elongatus, based on the degree of sequence identity of the COI gene to that of adult worms. Freshwater annelids (oligochaetes and leeches) and some aquatic insects (odonates) were demonstrated experimentally to be potential second intermediate hosts.

Impacts of pesticides and vinasse on the composition and functional diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates exposed in a mesocosm system.

Modern agriculture plays a significant role in the global economy. However, the continuous use of pesticides and fertilizers raises concerns about aquatic pollution and its effects on indigenous organisms. Thus, this study investigated the impact of the pesticides Regent® 800 WG (active ingredient - a.i. fipronil) and DMA® 806 BR (a.i. 2,4-D), as well as sugarcane vinasse, an ethanol industry byproduct applied in sugarcane crops as fertilizer, individually and in mixtures, on the functional diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at a mesocosm scale. For that, open-air mesocosms were used, in
