Radiological assessment of petroleum source rocks from the Middle Magdalena Valley basin in Colombia.

Colombia is currently assessing unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs; however, despite over five decades of conventional oil and gas operations, systematic radiological studies of petroleum formations remain scarce. To address this gap, eight source rock samples from five oil wells in the Tablazo and La Luna formations of the Middle Magdalena Valley Basin (MMVB) were analyzed by gamma- and alpha-spectrometry to quantify naturally occurring radionuclides from the 238U and 232 Th decay series and 40K. Complementary ICP-MS and XRD analyses determined elemental and mineralogical composition. The

Assessing multigenerational exposure of an extract of naphthenic acid fraction components derived from oil sands process-affected water in Daphnia magna.

Naphthenic acids (NAs) naturally occur in bitumen deposits and surrounding waters, particularly within the Athabasca oil sands region in Alberta, Canada. Bitumen extraction produces large volumes of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), which contains elevated concentrations of bitumen-derived chemicals, including NAs and other soluble organics. Although NAs are among the most acutely toxic component of OSPW to aquatic biota, there is limited understanding of chronic or multigenerational effects. To understand the effects of multigenerational exposure from an OSPW-derived NA fraction compon

Emission characteristics, source profiles and associated environmental impacts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from a typical oilfield centralized processing plant in Southern Xinjiang, China.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from oilfield processing activities have become an increasingly pressing issue for pollution mitigation in China. However, emission characteristics from oilfield processing facilities remain insufficiently understood, particularly at the process-unit level, hindering the development of precise control strategies. In this study, comprehensive field-based investigations and process-specific measurements were conducted to quantify and characterize VOCs emissions, environmental impacts and occupational carcinogenic risks in a typical oilfield centralized p

A decadal synthesis of atmospheric emissions, ambient air quality, and deposition in the oil sands region.

This review is part of a series synthesizing peer-reviewed literature from the past decade on environmental monitoring in the oil sands region (OSR) of northeastern Alberta. It focuses on atmospheric emissions, air quality, and deposition in and downwind of the OSR. Most published monitoring and research activities were concentrated in the surface-mineable region in the Athabasca OSR. Substantial progress has been made in understanding oil sands (OS)-related emission sources using multiple approaches: airborne measurements, satellite measurements, source emission testing, deterministic modelin

Potential of capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry for the characterization and monitoring of amine-derivatized naphthenic acids from oil sands process-affected water.

Capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry (CE-MS) was used for the analysis of naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs) of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). A standard mixture of amine-derivatized naphthenic acids is injected directly onto the CE column and analyzed by CE-MS in less than 15min. Time of flight MS analysis (TOFMS), optimized for high molecular weight ions, showed NAFCs between 250 and 800m/z. With a quadrupole mass analyzer, only low-molecular weight NAFCs (between 100 and 450m/z) are visible under our experimental conditions. Derivatization of NAFCs consis

Molecular dynamics insights into CO2/CH4-n-docosane molecular mixing under deep reservoir conditions.

Gas-oil miscibility within nanopores is a critical factor governing the efficient recovery of deep hydrocarbon resources. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to systematically investigate the miscibility, diffusion, and interfacial interaction mechanisms of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) with n-docosane (C22H46, abbreviated as C22) in hydroxylated silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanopores (6-20 nm), explicitly accounting for the coupled effects of high temperature, high pressure, and pore-size confinement across a range of reservoir conditions (120 °C/30 MPa to 270

Monitoring oil contamination in vegetated areas with optical remote sensing: A comprehensive review.

The monitoring of soil contamination deriving from oil and gas industry remains difficult in vegetated areas. Over the last decade, optical remote sensing has proved helpful for this purpose. By tracking alterations in vegetation biochemistry through its optical properties, multi- and hyperspectral remote sensing allow detecting and quantifying crude oil and petroleum products leaked following accidental leakages or bad cessation practices. Recent advances in this field have led to the development of various methods that can be applied either in the field using portable spectroradiometers or a

Shale gas wastewater geochemistry and impact on the quality of surface water in Sichuan Basin.

Shale gas wastewater (SGW) disposal is a major challenge in the areas in central China due to its increasing volume associated with intensification of shale gas exploration and its high levels of contaminants. In the Fuling shale gas field of Sichuan Basin, a small amount of SGW originated from the flowback and produced water (FPW) is treated and then discharged to a local stream. This study investigated the inorganic water geochemistry and Sr isotopic composition of the FPW in Fuling shale gas field, the SGW effluent that is generated in the treatment facility, and the quality of a local rive

Phase Characteristics of Fluids in Offshore Buried Hill Condensate Gas Reservoirs and Their Influence on Formation Permeability.

The BZ gas field is the first large gas field in the Bohai Sea of China, with reserves of 100 billion cubic meters. Its formal operation can greatly promote local green and low-carbon development. However, the condensate gas reservoir has characteristics such as a large burial depth, a steep temperature and pressure gradient, high condensate content, developed microfractures, and a small pressure difference between the surface and dew point. As a result, the retrograde condensate phenomenon will occur in the early stage of gas field development, which will lead to more condensate remaining in

Critical evaluation of human health risks due to hydraulic fracturing in natural gas and petroleum production.

The use of hydraulic fracturing (HF) to extract oil and natural gas has increased, along with intensive discussions on the associated risks to human health. Three technical processes should be differentiated when evaluating human health risks, namely (1) drilling of the borehole, (2) hydraulic stimulation, and (3) gas or oil production. During the drilling phase, emissions such as NOx, NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds) as precursors for tropospheric ozone formation, and SOx have been shown to be higher compared to the subsequent phases. In relation to hydraulic stimulation, the t

A case-control study of leukemia among petroleum workers.

This case-control study evaluates the relationship between leukemia and the work histories of active and retired employees of a large petroleum company. The study includes 69 cases with leukemia and 284 matched controls. Employment in production-related work in the oil and gas division was associated with myelogenous leukemia (odds ratio [OR] = 2.0, 95% confidence interval [CI] = .97 to 4.2) and particularly with acute myelogenous leukemia (OR = 2.8, 95% CI = 1.1 to 7.3). The association with acute myelogenous leukemia was strongest for subjects in the highest tertile (32+ years) of duration o

Comparison of the performance of prepared pristine and TiO2 coated UF/NF membranes for two types of oil-in-water emulsion separation.

Polysulfone ultrafiltration (UF) and polypiperazine-amide nanofiltration (NF) membranes were first fabricated by phase inversion and interfacial polymerization, and then modified by the commonly used TiO2 on the membrane surface, respectively. Compared with the pristine UF and NF membranes, pure water flux decreased by 40.66% for modified UF membrane and 12.92% for modified NF membrane, while the contact angle of the modified membranes decreased from 66.5° to 35.3° for UF membrane and from 48.2° to37.7° for NF membrane. However, the membrane modified by TiO2 nanoparticles for both UF and NF me

The development and application of a new method for quantifying total atmospheric sulfur in the Alberta Oil Sands.

Continuous ambient sulfur measurements are routinely conducted around the globe at numerous monitoring sites impacted by industrial sources, such as gas and oil processing facilities, pulp and paper mills, smelters, sewage treatment facilities, and concentrated animal feeding operations, as well as by natural sources, such as volcanoes. Various jurisdictions have or plan to establish air ambient quality objectives, guidelines, or standards for total reduced sulfur (TRS) based on odor perception and/or health effects. A conventional TRS monitoring technique is widely used, but few studies have

Microbial degradation of naphthenic acids using constructed wetland treatment systems: metabolic and genomic insights for improved bioremediation of process-affected water.

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are a complex mixture of organic compounds released during bitumen extraction from mined oil sands that are important contaminants of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). NAs can be toxic to aquatic organisms and, therefore, are a main target compound for OSPW. The ability of microorganisms to degrade NAs can be exploited for bioremediation of OSPW using constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTS), which represent a possible low energy and low-cost option for scalable in situ NA removal. Recent advances in genomics and analytical chemistry have provided insights int

Assessing Unconventional Oil and Gas Exposure in the Appalachian Basin: Comparison of Exposure Surrogates and Residential Drinking Water Measurements.

Health studies report associations between metrics of residential proximity to unconventional oil and gas (UOG) development and adverse health endpoints. We investigated whether exposure through household groundwater is captured by existing metrics and a newly developed metric incorporating groundwater flow paths. We compared metrics with detection frequencies/concentrations of 64 organic and inorganic UOG-related chemicals/groups in residential groundwater from 255 homes (Pennsylvania n = 94 and Ohio n = 161). Twenty-seven chemicals were detected in ≥20% of water samples at concentrations gen

Solar-activated zinc oxide photocatalytic treatment of real oil sands process water: Effect of treatment parameters on naphthenic acids, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and acute toxicity removal.

Oil sands process water (OSPW) is an industrial process effluent that contains organic compounds such as naphthenic acids (NAs) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as well as large quantities of inorganic compounds in its mixture. OSPW requires effective treatment for successful reclamation and water reuse. This study investigated the impact of solar-activated zinc oxide (ZnO) photocatalysis on the degradation and removal of NAs and PAHs in OSPW, as well as the elimination of its acute toxicity. With catalyst particles suspended in the effluent (at 1 g/L) under simulated solar radiation of s

Exploring the endocrine activity of air pollutants associated with unconventional oil and gas extraction.

BACKGROUND: In the last decade unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extraction has rapidly proliferated throughout the United States (US) and the world. This occurred largely because of the development of directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing which allows access to fossil fuels from geologic formations that were previously not cost effective to pursue. This process is known to use greater than 1,000 chemicals such as solvents, surfactants, detergents, and biocides. In addition, a complex mixture of chemicals, including heavy metals, naturally-occurring radioactive chemicals, and organic co
