[Standardized examination methods for smell and taste and their clinical value].

The diagnostic of disturbances of the chemical senses is from a clinical standpoint still insufficient, as the literature of the whole world shows. Ten years of experimental and clinical investigations as well as the collection and evaluation of the experiences at the University ENT-Clinic Halle/S., GDR--have helped to develop some new tests and tools like a big and a small smell-case, two electrogustometers, the documentation by means of olfacto- and gustograms and so on. Now in the whole GDR a special group of ENT-scientists, members of our ENT society, are working on standardisation. The ex

IMPAIRED OLFACTORY FUNCTION IN SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER.

The sense of smell plays a key role in guiding motivated behavior, and olfactory function is impaired in clinical populations with dysfunctional approach-avoidance behavior, including major depressive and alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, whether olfactory impairments are also observed in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) other than AUD is currently unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between olfactory function and SUDs. We tested olfaction in 40 individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) other than AUD using the Sniffin' Sticks odor identification and

D2/D3 Receptor Agonism: Paving the Way for a New Therapeutic Target for Taste Disorders in Parkinson's Disease and Other Conditions?

Chemosensory (i.e., olfaction and taste) dysfunction is common in neurodegenerative (e.g., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia), psychiatric (e.g., depression, bipolar disorders, other conditions), and postinfectious (i.e., long COVID) diseases and in the elderly. Despite its impact on patients' quality of life, no established treatment for taste disorders exists so far. A recent report on the effect of pramipexole, a D2/D3 agonist, on taste performance in healthy participants provides support for a new potential therapeutic target for taste dysfunction to be tested in futur

Mechanisms of olfactory dysfunction in aging and neurodegenerative disorders.

Although olfaction is the primal sense in animals, its importance in humans is underappreciated. Extensive literature demonstrates that aging is accompanied by olfactory loss and hyposmia/anosmia which is also a feature of several neurodegenerative disorders. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are characterized by severe olfactory deficits, while problems of olfactory discrimination are less prominent features in several other disorders. Olfactory loss is accompanied by structural abnormalities of the olfactory epithelium, the olfactory bulb and the central olfactory cortices. This review su

Impact of COVID-19-Mediated Olfactory Loss on Quality of Life.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 can be associated with a variety of longer-lasting impairments that can have a significant impact on patients' quality of life (QoL). While this is well described in the literature for limitations in lung capacity or permanent headaches, there is little research on the impact of olfactory dysfunction in the context of COVID-19 on patients' QoL. METHODS: In 65 patients with a history of COVID-19, the present olfactory ability was assessed using the Sniffin' Sticks test. In addition, olfactory QoL was assessed by the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders. Self-assessment w

Exploring Olfactory Dysfunction as a Marker of Frailty and Postoperative Outcomes in Head and Neck Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is increasingly recognized as a robust marker of frailty and mortality. Despite broad recognition of frailty as a critical component of head and neck cancer (HNC) care, there is no standardized frailty assessment. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of OD and its association with frailty and postoperative outcomes in HNC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this prospective cohort study with enrollment between February 17, 2021, to September 29, 2021, at a tertiary academic medical center, 85 eligible adult patients with primary, treatment-naive HNC o

Impact of Weight Loss on Olfaction in Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery.

PURPOSE: Olfaction plays a vital role in regulating nutrition, avoiding potentially dangerous situations, and modulating behavior along with interpersonal relationships. Many common disorders can have a negative impact on olfaction; one of these is obesity. Bariatric surgery induces weight loss, and current evidence suggests that it can cause improvement in olfaction. However, more information is needed regarding this topic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred eighty-five patients who underwent bariatric surgery and 184 age- and gender-matched control group who did not undergo any surgery have

[Special characteristics of expert assessment of olfactory and taste disorders].

BACKGROUND: The number of medical expert opinions dealing with smell and taste disorders has continuously increased in recent years. However, an overview of the specific problems and results of those expert opinions has not been published until now. INDIVIDUALS AND METHODS: Olfaction was assessed by multiple subjective tests in 145 individuals with chemosensory dysfunction caused by trauma or occupational and environmental exposures. Additionally, a gustatory test, nasal endoscopy, anterior rhinomanometry, and radiography of the paranasal sinuses were performed. Malignering was diagnosed on a

[Perception of taste and smell in normal and pathological aging: an update].

The physiological and pathological aging on sense organs is widely studied in the visual and hearing modalities. By contrast, taste and smell changes are widely overlooked. These symptoms are rarely evoked in the elderly and often neglected in clinical practice. Studies in this population are rare and show contradictory results. In this update, we describe the perception of taste and smell in aging. In a first part, we present studies about the aging of smell and taste senses. While taste is remarkably spared during aging, olfaction decreases dramatically since 5th decade of life, frequently r

Smelling phenomenal.

Qualitative-consciousness arises at the sensory level of olfactory processing and pervades our experience of smells to the extent that qualitative character is maintained whenever we are aware of undergoing an olfactory experience. Building upon the distinction between Access and Phenomenal Consciousness the paper offers a nuanced distinction between Awareness and Qualitative-consciousness that is applicable to olfaction in a manner that is conceptual precise and empirically viable. Mounting empirical research is offered substantiating the applicability of the distinction to olfaction and show

Imaging of the olfactory system.

The olfactory system consists of the primary olfactory nerves in the nasal cavity, the olfactory bulbs and tracts, and numerous intracranial connections and pathways. Diseases affecting the sense of smell can be located both extracranially and intracranially. Many sinonasal inflammatory and neoplastic processes may affect olfaction. Intracranially congenital, traumatic, and neurodegenerative disorders are usually to blame for olfactory dysfunction. The breadth of diseases that affect the sense of smell is astounding, yet the imaging ramifications have barely been explored.

The effect of an absorbable gelatin dressing impregnated with triamcinolone within the olfactory cleft on polypoid rhinosinusitis smell disorders.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory process that causes different clinical symptoms: nasal blockage and congestion, posterior and anterior nasal drip, and smell disorder ranging from reduced olfaction (hyposmia) to complete loss of smell (anosmia). It has been suggested that mechanical blockage of olfactory clef after polypectomy is responsible for the persistent impairment of olfaction in some cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of application of steroids at the olfactory cleft in improving olfactory function in patients who underwent sinus surger

Neural correlates of olfactory dysfunction: A systematic review.

Olfactory dysfunction affects over 20% of the population. Despite progress in understanding its neural pathophysiology, research remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes evidence of brain structural and functional measures, and their association with clinical characteristics (e.g., etiology, duration) in patients with olfactory dysfunction. This may help to identify neural correlates and potential neuroimaging biomarkers of olfactory dysfunction's severity and progression. Following PRISMA guidelines, we screened 2374 papers and included 164 studies. Structural MRI studies consis
