Reduced olfactory bulb volume and olfactory sulcus depth in obsessive compulsive disorder.

Many studies have shown that limbic system abnormalities are seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but the neurobiological changes in OCD are still unclear. Moreover, olfactory bulb volume (OBV) and its association with symptom severity have not been yet investigated in patients with OCD. This is the first study on OBV and olfactory sulcus depth (OSD) values in OCD patients, to the best of our knowledge. Between January 2018 and March 2022, 25 patients with OCD and 26 healthy controls with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were included. Detailed disease history of OCD patients was

Glomerular synaptic responses to olfactory nerve input in rat olfactory bulb slices.

In olfactory bulb slices from young rats, the field potential evoked in the glomerular layer by stimulation in the olfactory nerve layer consisted of two negative components: an early component (N1) which was blocked by bath application of the kainate/amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonist 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX, 10 microM), and a late, prolonged component (N2; duration > or = 350 msec) which was unaffected by CNQX, was enhanced by reduction of Mg2+ in the medium, and was blocked by the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist DL-2-ami

Impact of nasal septal deviation on olfactory bulb and olfactory tract morphometry.

BACKGROUND: The olfactory bulb (OB) is the central processing structure of olfactory information, but the effect of nasal septal deviation (NSD) on olfactory system morphology remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the morphometric and volumetric changes in the OB and olfactory tract (OT) associated with the direction and angle of NSD, and to investigate the relationship between these changes and septal morphometric parameters. METHODS: This prospective autopsy study included 86 cases aged 18-80 years, classified by computed tomography (CT) as right NSD (n = 46) and left NSD (n = 40).

Reduced olfactory bulb volume in post-traumatic and post-infectious olfactory dysfunction.

The olfactory bulb is a highly plastic structure the volume of which partly reflects the degree of afferent neural activity. In this study, 22 patients with post-infectious olfactory deficit, nine participants with post-traumatic olfactory deficit, and 17 healthy controls underwent magnetic resonance volumetry of the olfactory bulb. Patients presented with significantly smaller olfactory bulb volumes than controls; significant correlations between olfactory function and bulb volume were observed. Patients with parosmia exhibited smaller olfactory bulb volumes than those without parosmia. Findi

Axon mis-targeting in the olfactory bulb during regeneration of olfactory neuroepithelium.

During development, primary olfactory axons typically grow to their topographically correct target zone without extensive remodelling. Similarly, in adults, new axons arising from the normal turnover of sensory neurons essentially project to their target without error. In the present study we have examined axon targeting in the olfactory pathway following extensive chemical ablation of the olfactory neuroepithelium in the P2-tau:LacZ line of mice. These mice express LacZ in the P2 subpopulation of primary olfactory neurons whose axons target topographically fixed glomeruli on the medial and la

Host primary olfactory axons make synaptic contacts in a transplanted olfactory bulb.

Previous light microscopic studies have shown that host olfactory neurons are able to grow into a transplanted fetal olfactory bulb, and behavioral studies have shown that animals with transplanted olfactory bulbs recover functional olfactory abilities. We examined the olfactory bulb transplant at the ultrastructural level to determine whether synaptic contacts are reestablished between host olfactory neurons and donor olfactory bulb. Mature rats that, as neonates, had received embryonic olfactory bulb transplants following olfactory bulb removal were studied. An antibody specific for olfactor

Surgical Approaches for Possible Positions of an Olfactory Implant to Stimulate the Olfactory Bulb.

INTRODUCTION: Current scientific developments seem to allow for an "olfactory implant" in analogy to cochlear implants. However, the position and surgical approaches for electrical stimulation of the olfactory system are unclear. METHODS: In a human anatomic cadaver study, we investigated different endoscopic approaches to electrically stimulate the olfactory bulb (OB) based on the following considerations: (1) the stimulating electrode should be close to the OB. (2) The surgical procedure should be as non-invasive and safe as possible and (3) as easy as possible for an experienced ENT surgeo

Synaptic connectivity of serotonergic axons in the olfactory glomeruli of the rat olfactory bulb.

Although the major mode of transmission for serotonin in the brain is volume transmission, previous anatomical studies have demonstrated that serotonergic axons do form synaptic contacts. The olfactory glomeruli of the olfactory bulb of mammals receive a strong serotonergic innervation from the dorsal and medial raphe nuclei. In the present report, we investigate the synaptic connectivity of these serotonergic axons in the glomerular neuropil of the rat olfactory bulb. Our study shows that serotonergic axons form asymmetrical synaptic contacts on dendrites within the glomerular neuropil. Analy

Uptake of inorganic mercury in the olfactory bulbs via olfactory pathways in rats.

Uptake and transport in the olfactory neurons may be an important means by which some heavy metals gain access to the brain. In the present study we explored whether inorganic mercury (203Hg2+) may be taken up in the CNS via the olfactory pathway. Autoradiography and gamma spectrometry showed that intranasal instillation of 203Hg2+ in the right nostrils of rats resulted in much higher levels of the metal in the right olfactory bulbs than in the left ones. At the side of the application of the 203Hg2+ there was also a labeling of the olfactory nerve bundles projecting to the olfactory bulbs as

Olfactory bulb DA receptors may be located on terminals of the olfactory nerve.

The glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb contains a substantial population of dopaminergic neurons. We determined the quantity and location of D1 and D2 dopamine receptors which are the presumed targets of these neurons. Binding of the D1 selective ligand [3H]SCH23390 was slightly above background and was distributed through all layers of the bulb except the olfactory nerve layer. In contrast there were relatively high levels of [3H]spiperone binding to D2 DA receptors in the glomerular and olfactory nerve layers. The presence of relatively high concentrations of D2 DA receptors in both the

Distribution of D2 dopamine receptor in the olfactory glomeruli of the rat olfactory bulb.

Dopamine plays key roles in the processing of the olfactory information that takes place in the olfactory glomeruli. Previous studies using autoradiography demonstrate that, at the glomerular level, these actions are mainly mediated via activation of D2 dopamine receptors. Moreover, it has been suggested that D2 receptors could be present in the olfactory nerve, where they might modulate the entrance of olfactory input into the brain. Nevertheless, the precise subcellular localization of D2 receptors in the glomerular neuropil has not been investigated. In this report, we show the subcellular

Viral replication in olfactory receptor neurons and entry into the olfactory bulb and brain.

This communication describes our ongoing studies of the interaction of the mouse host and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). When VSV is applied to the nasal neuroepithelium, it initially replicates in olfactory receptor neurons, and is transmitted along the olfactory nerve to the central nervous system (CNS) within 12 hours. In the olfactory bulb, the virus replicates invasively through the layers of the olfactory bulb, reaching the olfactory ventricle by day 4-5 post infection, and the hindbrain by day 8 post infection. In mice, infection may result in a 50% mortality rate. The crucial host i

Response patterns of single neurons in the tortoise olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb.

The responses to odor stimulation of 40 single units in the olfactory mucosa and of 18 units in the olfactory bulb of the tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) were recorded with indium-filled, Pt-black-tipped microelectrodes. The test battery consisted of 27 odorants which were proved effective by recording from small bundles of olfactory nerve. Two concentrations of each odorant were employed. These values were adjusted for response magnitudes equal to those for amyl acetate at -2.5 and -3.5 log concentration in olfactory twig recording. Varying concentrations were generated by an injection-type ol

Olfactory bulb stimulation mitigates Alzheimer's-like disease progression.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has demonstrated potential in mitigating Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the invasive nature of DBS presents challenges for its application. The olfactory bulb (OB), showing early AD-related changes and extensive connections with memory regions, offers an attractive entry point for intervention, potentially restoring normal activity in deteriorating memory circuits. AIMS: Our study examined the impact of electrically stimulating the OB on working memory as well as pathological and electrophysiological alterations in the OB, medial prefrontal cortex,
