Stability in flexibility: Shifting alliances stabilize the symbioses of marine animals over 150 million years.

Many animals benefit from microbial symbionts that aid digestion, supply essential nutrients, or provide defense. When this dependence becomes obligate, as in gutless marine oligochaetes that have lost both digestive and excretory systems and rely entirely on their bacterial partners for nutrition and recycling of waste compounds, it would seem to constrain ecological and evolutionary flexibility. Yet, these worms are globally distributed and thrive across diverse environments. To investigate how stability and adaptability coexist in such obligate symbioses, we combined global sampling with hi

In vivo assessment of APPJ discharge on the earthworm: coelomic TAC and MDA levels, cell death, and tissue regeneration.

The effective medical applications of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) have been reported by many researchers, including sterilization of liquid and solid surfaces, treatment of chronic wounds, treatment of cancer tumors, and blood clots. Therefore, in this study, we exposed Aporrectodea trapezoides and Eisenia fetida earthworms to APPJ discharge (0-30 s) to evaluate the impacts on regeneration of missed segments, apoptosis, lipid peroxidation (LPo), catalase activity (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total proteins, and protein profile. Results showed APPJ induced significan

Comparison of biomarker responses after acute and chronic bioassays in Lumbriculus variegatus.

Differential biomarker responses may occur after acute or chronic bioassays when animals are unfed. In many aquatic species, food deprivation may lead to a pro-oxidant condition. However, information about its effects on the oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus, a bioindicator organism for water and sediment toxicity tests, is almost completely lacking. Acute (48 h) and chronic (21 days) bioassays were performed using unfed L. variegatus to assess the impact of food deprivation on several biomarkers related to the redox cellular status. Results showed that food deprivation inhibited the antioxid

Inter-species bystander effect: Eisenia fetida and Enchytraeus albidus exposed to uranium and cadmium.

The bystander effect is commonly defined as the observation of effects in nonirradiated cells and tissues when the later are in contact with irradiated cells/ tissues. More recently the occurrence of bystander effect between organisms of the same species has been also demonstrated. Nevertheless, there is limited knowledge about this effect between soil dwelling organisms from different taxonomic groups, as well as in response to stressors other than ionizing radiation. Moreover, data reporting this phenomenon for soil invertebrates are scarce. The results herein presented contribute for the un

Joint effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles and chlorpyrifos on the reproduction and cellular stress responses of the earthworm Eisenia andrei.

The co-exposure of soil organisms to ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and pesticides is likely to take place in agricultural soils. However, the impacts of co-exposure on terrestrial ecosystems are virtually unknown. In this paper, Eisenia andrei was exposed for a 28-day period to serial concentrations of ZnO NPs and/or the organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) in natural soil, and was evaluated for single and joint effects. Zn and CPF accumulation in earthworm tissue was also determined. In the single assay, ZnO NPs and CPF caused statistical significant effects on survival and growth, bu

[Effects of earthworm on soil microbes and biological fertility: A review].

Earthworms are considered as 'ecosystem engineers', as they affect soil microbial community and function by improving micro-habitat, increasing surface area of organic compound, feeding, and transporting microorganisms. Multi-scale cavities created through earthworm movements help improve soil porosity and aeration, thus supporting microbial growth and reproduction. Earthworms also break down complex organic compounds into microbe-accessible nutrients by means of feeding on, crushing, and mixing soil. This results in elevated mineralization and improvement of cycling of key soil nutrients incl

[Consequences of experimental triploidy on the fertility and sexual differentiation of a normally amphigonic and diploid lombrician, Eisenia foetida Sav].

The fertility of experimental triploid worms has been studied in Eisenia foetida Sav. This study has led us to the conclusion that the female germ line is abortive while the male germ line may as an exception take part in fertilization. Histological controls have confirmed the differentiating ability of the male line and the break in the development of the female line.

Toxicity mechanisms of plastic nanoparticles in three terrestrial species: antioxidant system imbalance and neurotoxicity.

The detrimental impacts of plastic nanoparticles (PNPs) are a worldwide concern, although knowledge is still limited, in particular for soil mesofauna. This study investigates the biochemical impact of 44 nm polystyrene PNPs on three soil models-Enchytraeus crypticus (Oligochaeta), Folsomia candida (Collembola) and Porcellionides pruinosus (Isopoda). Exposure durations of 3, 7 and 14 days (d) were implemented at two concentrations (1.5 and 300 mg kg-1 PNPs). Results revealed PNPs impact on the activities of the glutathione-dependent antioxidative enzyme, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and on

Ecotoxicity of bioinsecticide spinosad to soil organisms: Commercial formulation versus active ingredient.

Spintor® (SPIT®) is a commercial formulation of a bioinsecticide with the active ingredient Spinosad (SPIN). Despite the efforts of regulatory agencies, there still is a lack of information regarding short- and long-term exposures to soil-dwellers, as well as effects at environmentally relevant concentrations. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of SPIT® and SPIN, on the oligochaete Eisenia fetida, and the arthropod Folsomia candida. For this, natural soil was spiked with environmentally relevant concentrations (0.00-1.49 mg of the active ingredient·kg-1 of dry soil) to assess avoidance be

[Iron porphyrin metal-organic framework material for efficient enrichment of earthworm polypeptides].

Earthworms are a commonly used animal-derived traditional Chinese medicine in China, with proteins and polypeptides as their main active ingredients. However, the existing methods for separating and detecting earthworm polypeptides have problems such as insufficient preparation capacity and poor separation reproducibility. To address these challenges, this study used the iron porphyrin metal-organic framework material PCN-222(Fe) to specifically adsorb the earthworm polypeptide component L-PeakⅡ, with an adsorption capacity of 139 mg/g. First of all, PCN-222(Fe) material was successfully prepa

Small heat shock proteins with two alpha-crystallin domains: a new set of proteins in the earthworm Eisenia fetida with differential transcriptional responses to stressors.

Climate change and environmental pollution are two primary challenges facing biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Earthworms are key contributors to soil structure and nutrient cycling, and their molecular stress responses can provide an early indication of soil health impairment. Heat shock proteins are central to the stress response, and small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) are ATP-independent chaperones that limit stress-induced protein aggregation. Because their expression is stress-sensitive, sHSPs are promising molecular markers for soil stress and contributors to thermotolerance. Eisenia

A bibliometric analysis and literature review of earthworms used as bio-indicators for assessing soil heavy metal pollution.

Earthworms serve as valuable bioindicators for assessing soil contamination due to their high sensitivity to pollutants. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of a thorough overview of recent advancements and emerging trends in the application of earthworms for assessing the risks associated with soil heavy metal pollution. In this study, the current research status of earthworms in relation to soil heavy metal pollution over the past two decades is examined by utilizing the Web of Science database. A total of 1068 publications were analyzed utilizing VOSviewer and Bibliometrix tools, revealing

Bioaccumulation and toxicity of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and perfluorobutane sulfonamide (FBSA) in Eisenia fetida and Eisenia andrei.

The widespread use and persistence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have raised concerns about their ecological impacts. The relative lack of toxicological data for most current-use PFAS, including short-chain compounds such as perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and precursors such as perfluorobutane sulfonamide (FBSA), is an uncertainty factor in ecological risk assessment. This study investigated the bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity (mortality, light avoidance, and change in soil granulometry as proxy of burrowing behaviour) of PFBS and FBSA in the earthworm species Eisenia fe

Allolobophora caliginosa as bioindicator for chitosan-saponin-bentonite nanocomposite contaminated soil.

The usage of nanocomposites in water treatment has risen, resulting in their leaking into the soil, which is a major environmental concern. Earthworm (Allolobophora caliginosa) is used as a bioindicator that can accumulate most pollutants, even if they are present in low concentrations. The present study aimed to use earthworms as biological indicator for chitosan-saponin-bentonite nanocomposite (CSB NCs) in the soil. Earthworms were exposed to CSB NCs (0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 mg/500 g soil) for 7 consecutive days. CSB NCs induced significant damage and instability of the lysosomal membr

Optimizing the lyophilization of Lumbricus terrestris erythrocruorin.

Haemorrhagic shock is a leading cause of death worldwide. Blood transfusions can be used to treat patients suffering severe blood loss but donated red blood cells (RBCs) have several limitations that limit their availability and use. To solve the problems associated with donated RBCs, several acellular haemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) have been developed to restore the most important function of blood: oxygen transport. One promising HBOC is the naturally extracellular haemoglobin (i.e. erythrocruorin) of Lumbricus terrestris (LtEc). The goal of this study was to maximise the portabil

Ciprofloxacin enhances cadmium toxicity to earthworm Eisenia fetida by altering the gut microorganism composition.

The concurrent existence of cadmium (Cd) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in agricultural soils is very common, but presents a challenge to soil organisms. As more attention has been paid to the effect of toxic metals on the migration of antibiotic resistance genes, the critical role of the gut microbiota in CIP-modifying Cd toxicity in earthworms remains unclear. In this study, Eisenia fetida was exposed to Cd and CIP alone or in combination at environmentally relevant concentrations. Cd and CIP accumulation in earthworm increased as their respective spiked concentrations increased. In fact, Cd accumu

Potential neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and carcinogenicity induced by metribuzin and tebuconazole exposure in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) revealed by transcriptome analysis.

Metribuzin and tebuconazole have been widely used in agriculture for several decades. Apart from endocrine disruption, little is known about their toxicological effects on organisms without thyroid organs, at the transcriptional level. To explore this toxicity, model earthworm species Eisenia fetida, hatched from the same cocoon and cultured under identical environmental conditions, were independently exposed to the two chemicals at non-lethal concentrations in OECD artificial soil for 48 h after exposure. RNA-seq technology was used to analyze and compare the gene expression profiles of earth

Characterisation of sphaeractinomyxon types (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) from marine and freshwater oligochaetes in a Portuguese estuary, with the demise of the endocapsa collective group.

Six types of sphaeractinomyxon are reported from the coelomic cavity of oligochaetes collected from the Minho River estuary in northern Portugal. Four new types are morphologically and molecularly described from freshwater species belonging to the genera Psammoryctides Hrabě and Potamothrix Vejdovský et Mrázek in the upper estuary, thus significantly increasing the number of known freshwater sphaeractinomyxon. In the lower estuary, sphaeractinomyxon types 8 and 10 of Rangel et al. (2016) are recorded infecting the marine oligochaete Tubificoides pseudogaster (Dahl). A single specimen of T. pse
