The authors report the case of a 2-year-old boy with a primary, diffuse leptomeningeal oligodendroglioma in which the deletion of chromosome arm lp was identified by performing a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis. This previously healthy child initially presented with malaise, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and macrocephaly. Imaging studies confirmed the presence of hydrocephalus, and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was placed. The postoperative course was complicated by emesis, continued weight loss, and numerous seizurelike episodes. A contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

We report two cases of leptomeningeal metastatic dissemination to the spinal cord of a grade B oligodendroglioma. Diagnosis was suspected on MRI but imaging findings were nonspecific. The pathways by which the intramedullary part of the spinal is reached by metastatic cells remains controversial. In the reported cases, both frontal and cystic primary intracerebral lesions were observed. Chemotherapy after radiotherapy appears to improve outcome. Nevertheless, prognosis remains very poor.

BACKGROUND: p53 is a tumor suppressor gene implicated in the genesis of a variety of malignancies including brain tumors. Overexpression of the p53 protein is often used as a surrogate indicator of alterations in the p53 gene.
AIMS: In this study, data is presented on p53 protein expression in adult cases (>15 years of age) of astrocytic (n=152) and oligodendroglial (n=28) tumors of all grades. Of the astrocytic tumors, 86% were supratentorial in location while remaining 14% were located infratentorially - 8 in the the cerebellum and 13 in the brainstem. All the oligodendrogliomas were suprat

OBJECT: Demonstration of the loss of chromosomes 1p and 19q in the presence of a brain neoplasm marks the emergence of genotype as a prognostic indicator. The authors report gene expression data for oligodendroglioma and correlate genotype with response to therapy. Gene expression subgroups may represent distinct types of disease.
METHODS: Eighty-seven cases of supratentorial oligodendroglioma were selected from 145 cases treated in a single center between January 1990 and December 2001. Fluorescence in situ hybridization was used to determine the status of chromosomes 1p and 19q. Parameters

Pseudoprogression is a clinical and imaging phenomenon characterized by an increase in the size and contrast enhancement pattern of a glioma lesion following treatment with radiotherapy. In human beings, a substantial body of literature describes the phenomenon of pseudoprogression in glioblastoma after radiotherapy. The occurrence of gliomas in the cranial nerves has been reported in human beings as a clinically rare entity. A 7-year-old spayed female French Bulldog was presented with left-sided craniofacial muscle atrophy for a duration of 3 months and episodes of compulsive circling to the

Oligodendroglial tumors are rare tumors that constitute part of the neuroepithelial tumors of the central nervous system. A diffuse, low-grade astrocytoma (WHO grade II), oligodendrogliomas are typically encountered in adults, with children under the age of 15 accounting for about 25% of cases. Although they can arise anywhere in the central nervous system, oligodendrogliomas typically occur in the cerebral white matter. Radiotherapy is the main mode of treatment since surgical intervention is limited to the role of biopsy and management of secondary effects, due to the deep brain location of

An 11-year-old spayed female French bulldog was referred on suspicion of nasal tumor. Anaplastic oligodendroglioma in the olfactory bulb that was suspected to have invaded the nasal cavity was diagnosed from imaging and histopathology. Metastasis to cervical lymph nodes was suspected, with no other metastases identified. The brain-to-nasal lesion and lymph nodes were treated with hypo-fractionated radiation therapy. Nasal congestion soon resolved. About 3 months later, follow-up computed tomography revealed multiple hepatic and splenic masses, which were cytologically suspected as metastatic o

Oligodendroglioma is a common brain tumor in dogs, particularly brachycephalic breeds. Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) are suspected to be a possible origin of oligodendroglioma, although it has not been well elucidated. In the present study, 27 cases of canine brain oligodendrogliomas were histologically and immunohistochemically examined. The most commonly affected breed was the French Bulldog ( n = 19 of 27, 70%). Seizure was the most predominant clinical sign ( n = 17 of 25, 68%). The tumors were located mainly in the cerebrum, particularly in the frontal lobe ( n = 10 of 27, 37%).

C-kit is a proto-oncogene located on the long arm of chromosome 4. Its product, CD117, is a specific immunohistochemical (IHQ) marker that is associated with response to a potent tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy with STI-571 (Gleevec®) in chronic myelogenous leukemia and GISTs. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the expression of CD117 in glial tumors as this finding may guide therapeutic approaches for these brain tumors. Ependymomas and oligodendrogliomas, in formalin fixed and paraffin embedded blocks were assayed for CD117 immunoreactivity using anti-c-kit (CD117, DAKO). GISTs were used a

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular oligodendroglioma remains a rare diagnosis, with high-grade/anaplastic IVO being an even rarer subtype. These lesions vary in regard to tumor grading and clinical presentation, as compared with their intraparenchymal counterparts. A case report and review of the previous literature regarding IVO and tumor grading were conducted.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A case report of a patient with an anaplastic oligodendroglioma confined entirely within the ventricular system is presented. The patient underwent gross total surgical resection with perioperative shunt placement, yet de

Metastatic involvement of the cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) pathway in oligodendrogliomas is not uncommon; however, symptomatic involvement of the spinal cord is very rare: less of 10 cases have been published. To our knowledge, an intracranial oligodendroglioma presenting with symptoms of drop metastases in the cauda equina has never been reported. We report a case of 67-year-old woman who after 1 month of severe low back and legs pain developed symptoms of raised intracranial pressure. A spinal cord MRI showed multiple intradural nodular lesions at the level of the cauda equina, a MRI of the br

A case of a 32-year old male patient with complaints of frontal headache progressive decrease in visual acuity, altered behaviour, and positive results of immunological tests for cysticercosis performed on the cystic and cerebrospinal fluids is presented. After several clinical and surgical proceedings, the frontal craniotomy was indicated and a multi-lobulated cystic tumor was excised. Biopsy material revealed an oligodendroglioma invading the degenerated membrane of cystic wall. Some aspects related to the possible mechanisms involved in the association of oligodendroglioma with neurocystice

Oligodendrogliomas rarely grow primarily in the ventricles. When compared to more common hemispheric counterparts, such intraventricular oligodendrogliomas, or oligodendrogliomas of the midline group (Martin), present distinct clinical features, namely, (1) they occur in the younger age, (2) an interval between clinical onset and diagnosis or operation is shorter, and (3) initial symptoms are most often limited to those of increased intracranial pressure, although the patient may occasionally present mild organic dementia, callosal disconnection syndrome, and/or mild gait ataxia. Two cases of

On the basis of our previous investigation regarding histological transformation of recurrent astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas we report the clinical results of reoperations. The present observations deal with 121 cases: grade 1 astrocytomas (45), oligodendrogliomas (12), grade 2 astrocytomas (47), and oligodendrogliomas (17), respectively. In all these a second reoperation was performed in 14 cases. Operative mortality was relatively high, but without significant difference in the two groups of maligancy: 24.5% and 29.6%. Survival times in both groups showed striking individual differences

OBJECTIVE: Primary spinal oligodendrogliomas (sODGs) are an exceptionally rare subset of oligodendrogliomas (ODGs). As such, there is a limited understanding of their natural history, optimal treatment approaches, and long-term outcomes. This systematic review aimed to better characterize the presentation and management of sODGs.
METHODS: Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was performed using the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases from inception to December 2024. The review inc

PURPOSE: Oligodendroglioma are rare pediatric brain tumors. The literature about neuroimaging findings is scant. A correct presurgical diagnosis is important to plan the therapeutic approach. Here, we evaluated the conventional and advanced neuroimaging features in our cohort of pediatric oligodendrogliomas and discuss our findings in the context of the current literature.
METHODS: Clinical histories were reviewed for tumor grading, neurologic manifestation, treatment, and clinical status at the last follow-up. Neuroimaging studies were retrospectively evaluated for tumor morphology and chara

We present a 41-year-old man who experienced alien limb syndrome as a complication of treatment for recurrent Grade III oligodendroglioma of the right parietal lobe. Alien limb syndrome is a rare phenomenon in which a limb performs involuntary actions and the affected individual feels a sense of estrangement towards the limb. It occurs most commonly as a result of corticobasal syndrome, though a variety of other etiologies have been reported. It is rarely associated with focal lesions, such as stroke or tumors.
