Journal of business continuity & emergency planning2024eng
Since the implementation of the HITECH Act 2009, the integration of the electronic health record (EHR) with other technology platforms has increased the complexity and necessity of technology downtimes, and the continuity of patient care has become increasingly dependent on an intact EHR. To maintain business continuity and safe patient care during planned or unplanned EHR downtime, it is imperative that organisations have solid downtime and disaster recovery plans. Successful downtime planning will include documenting, with annual reviews, the process for patient care during downtime, as well

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are newly emerging and reemerging infectious diseases. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases identifies the following as emerging infectious diseases: SARS, MERS, COVID-19, influenza, fungal diseases, plague, schistosomiasis, smallpox, tick-borne diseases, and West Nile fever. The factors that should be taken into consideration are the genetic adaptation of microbial agents and the characteristics of the human host or environment. The new approach to identifying new possible pathogens will have to go through the One Health approach and om

Having gained momentum in the last decade, the One Health initiative promotes a holistic approach to address complex global health issues. Before recommending its adoption to stakeholders, however, it is paramount to first compile quantitative evidence of the benefit of such an approach. The aim of this scoping review was to identify and summarize primary research that describes monetary and non-monetary outcomes following adoption of a One Health approach. An extensive literature search yielded a total of 42,167 references, of which 85 were included in the final analysis. The top two biotic h

BACKGROUND: Globally, mental health disorders are on the rise in response to both natural and man-made crises. Especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Ethiopia, this is further stretching the already limited mental health facilities, necessitating an innovative solution to the challenges it presents. With the primary goal of examining methods to enhance the quality and accessibility of mental health care in Ethiopia, the Center for International Health at the University hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (CIHLMU), the International Network for Cooperation in Men

This paper traces the emergence and tensions of an internationally constructed and framed One World-One Health (OWOH) approach to control and attempt to eliminate African Trypanosomiasis in Uganda. In many respects Trypanosomiasis is a disease that an OWOH approach is perfectly designed to treat, requiring an integrated approach built on effective surveillance in animals and humans, quick diagnosis and targeting of the vector. The reality appears to be that the translation of global notions of OWOH down to national and district levels generates problems, primarily due to interactions between:

Sulfonamide resistance is often viewed as a consequence of antibiotic misuse; however, growing evidence reveals its widespread distribution across humans, animals, and the environment. Escherichia coli exhibits sulfamethoxazole resistance of 44-57%, with 93% of isolates carrying sul1 or sul2, while sul4 has recently emerged in companion animals; many resistant strains harbor class 1 integrons linking sulfonamide resistance to other antibiotics. Although constructed wetlands remove 86-99% of sulfamethoxazole from wastewater, sul1 frequently persists ( ~ 10⁵ copies/mL), and in aquaculture, milkf

Antimicrobial resistance is a major threat to human health and must be approached from a One Health perspective. Use of antimicrobials in animal husbandry can lead to dissemination and persistence of resistance in human pathogens. Polyether ionophores (PIs) have antimicrobial activities and are among the most extensively used feed additives for major production animals. Recent discoveries of genetically encoded PI resistance mechanisms and co-localization of resistance mechanisms against PIs and antimicrobials used in human medicine on transferrable plasmids, have raised concerns that use of P

The One Health concept focuses on the interconnections between human health, animal health, and the environment, stressing the need for interdisciplinary collaborations to address complex issues such as the health challenges posed by climate change and global pandemics. One Health is a central part of the curriculum of veterinary schools, however, it is rarely incorporated into medical school education. Nationally, there are limited examples of formal One Health education and training for medical students. To incorporate One Health into its curriculum, John A. Burns School of Medicine develope

The rise of African trypanocide resistance (ATr) is influenced by various factors such as evolutionary changes in the pathogen, the presence of resistance genes in the population, poor policy decisions, limited private-public partnerships to engage local communities, and insufficient funding for the development of new drugs over the past sixty years. These challenges have been exacerbated by the inadequate implementation of drug liberalization policies in the mid 20th century, leading to poor pharmacovigilance practices for veterinary drugs in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Anthrax outbreaks in Ghana have become a pressing public health concern, posing threats to human health, the agricultural sector, and social well-being. This letter to the editor highlights the gravity of the anthrax situation in Ghana and advocates for comprehensive interventions using a One Health approach. The epidemiology of anthrax, including its historical roots and modes of transmission, is discussed. The consequences of anthrax outbreaks, such as severe illness, economic losses, and social distress, are outlined. To combat this complex issue, the letter emphasizes the importance of enh

A singular pathogen has been killing animals, contaminating food and causing an array of human diseases. Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is the cause of a fatal enteric infectious disease called Johne's (Yo'-nees), a disorder mostly studied in ruminant animals. MAP is globally impacting animal health and imparting significant economic burden to animal agriculture. Confounding the management of Johne's disease is that animals are typically infected as calves and while commonly not manifesting clinical disease for years, they shed MAP in their milk and feces in the interval

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In 2020, the Appropriations Committee for the U.S. House of Representatives directed the CDC to develop a national One Health framework to combat zoonotic diseases, including sylvatic plague, which is caused by the flea-borne bacterium Yersinia pestis. This review builds upon that multisectoral objective. We aim to increase awareness of Y. pestis and to highlight examples of plague mitigation for One Health purposes (i.e., to achieve optimal health outcomes for people, animals, plants, and their shared environment). We draw primarily upon examples from the USA, but also disc

This report of the EFSA and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control presents the results of zoonoses monitoring activities carried out in 2020 in 27 EU Member States (MS) and nine non-MS. Key statistics on zoonoses and zoonotic agents in humans, food, animals and feed are provided and interpreted historically. Two events impacted 2020 MS data collection and related statistics: the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU. In 2020, the first and second most reported zoonoses in humans were campylobacteriosis and salmonellos

This report of the European Food Safety Authority and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control presents the results of zoonoses monitoring activities carried out in 2018 in 36 European countries (28 Member States (MS) and 8 non-MS). The first and second most commonly reported zoonoses in humans were campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis, respectively. The European Union (EU) trend for confirmed human cases of these two diseases was stable during 2014-2018. The proportion of human salmonellosis cases due to Salmonella Enteritidis was at the same level in 2018 as in 2017. Of the 27

The One Environmental Health research approach, a subspecialty of the One Health initiative, focuses on toxic chemicals. Distinct disciplines work together to give a holistic perspective of a health concern through discrete disciplines, including, but not limited to, public health and the medical and veterinary sciences. In this article, we illustrate the concept of One Environmental Health with two case studies. One case study focuses on alligators and contributions to the field of endocrine disruption. The other case study focuses on whales and contributions to understanding carcinogenic met

INTRODUCTION: One Health (OH) can be considered a complex emerging policy to resolve health issues at the animal-human and environmental interface. It is expected to drive system changes in terms of new formal and informal institutional and organisational arrangements. This study, using Rift Valley fever (RVF) as a zoonotic problem requiring an OH approach, sought to understand the institutionalisation process at national and subnational levels in an early adopting country, Kenya.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Social network analysis methodologies were used. Stakeholder roles and relational data wer

Zoonoses make up approximately ¾ of today’s emerging infectious diseases; many of these zoonoses come from exotic pets and wildlife. Recent outbreaks in humans associated with nondomestic animals include Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome, Ebola virus, salmonellosis, and monkeypox. Expanding human populations, increased exotic pet ownership and changes in climate may contribute to increased incidence of zoonoses. Education and preventive medicine practices can be applied by veterinarians and other health professionals to reduce the risk of contracting a zoonotic disease. The health of humans, a
