This study presents the epidemiological and mycological aspects of 299 patients with nail lesions who were referred to three diagnostic laboratories in the city of Cali. The diagnosis of mycoses was established through visualization of mycotic structures in a direct microscopic examination of skin scrapings and by isolation. Onychomycosis was found in 183 cases (61.2%), of which 141 were in toenails (44 in males and 97 in females), 38 in fingernails (9 males and 29 females), and 4 cases in toenails and fingernails simultaneously (all females). No statistically significant relation was found be

The systemic treatment of fungal infections has changed considerably over the past 10 to 20 years. Though griseofulvin was introduced in the late 1950s and was at the time the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug in the United States for the systemic treatment of onychomycosis, its cure rate seldom exceeds 40%. Newer drugs appear to be reducing treatment times, improving cure rates with a minimum of side effects, and achieving long-term remissions in recalcitrant infections. Itraconazole was FDA approved in 1995, and terbinafine was FDA approved in 1996. Both have been used sa

Onychomycosis in children is relatively uncommon, with a prevalence of approximately 0.3% worldwide. The most common etiologic organism in Trichophyton rubrum. The oral antifungal agents terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole, and the topical nail lacquers ciclopirox and amorolfine, are not approved for use in treating onychomycosis in children. However, these agents appear to be effective and safe in this indication.

OBJECTIVE: The quality of original clinical trial publications pertaining to the use of oral antifungal agents to treat onychomycosis was evaluated using predetermined criteria.
METHODS: The list of studies included in this analysis was determined by conducting a search in Medline. For each clinical trial, two independent reviewers each determined a composite score by evaluating a list of criteria that were felt to represent a good study, for example, randomization and blinding, prior sample size calculated, and treatment regimen clearly explained. A citation count was performed to determine

Terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole are effective and well tolerated for treating onychomycosis in children. Dosage depends on body weight. Duration of treatment is the same for adults.

The study of the quality of life in onychomycosis is recent. Since 10 years, the evolution of methods has allowed to have more precision about the patient's feelings, especially in physical, functional, psychical and social criteria. In the future, we can hope than such studies could help to manage therapies decisions to get a best efficacy and lower costs.

It is mandatory to establish a firm diagnosis before starting systemic antimycotic therapy because of potential side effects and relatively high therapy costs. Direct microscopy and fungal culture are the most widely employed diagnostic tools. Not infrequently, a strong clinical suspicion cannot be proven by even repeated direct microscopic examinations and fungal cultures. In these cases histologic examination is a simple alternative. We identified 32 cases of histopathologically proven onychomycosis; of the 29 where a fungal culture was performed, only 14 (48%) were positive. Direct microsco

Onychomycosis is less common in children than in adults. When onychomycosis is suspected, appropriate mycologic tests should be carried out for confirmation. Tinea pedis may be associated with onychomycosis. Family members also may have onychomycosis or tinea pedis. Oral antifungal therapy is required, particularly when the extent of onychomycosis is moderate or severe. The longest clinical experience with antifungal therapy is with griseofulvin, a drug that has to be administered for several months. The newer oral antifungal agents for the treatment of onychomycosis in children include itraco

This report presents the results of a study conducted between 1985 and 1994 on onychomycosis observed in the city of Rome. Six thousand six hundred and eighty eight patients were examined during this period. Among them 1,762 (26.3%) were affected by fungal nail infections. Because the etiologic agents could not be isolated in 105 cases (6%), the results refer to 1,657 subjects (24.8% of the total), presenting with positive microscopic and cultural examinations. Thirty eight patients (2.3%) had onychomycosis of both their hands and feet. From an etiological point of view, 59.1% of the nail infe

PURPOSE: To describe current evidence regarding the treatment of clients with onychomycosis who have one or more chronic illnesses.
DATA SOURCES: Current review of research articles, standard pharmaceutical texts, and case studies.
CONCLUSIONS: Onychomycosis is often considered only as a cosmetic diagnosis. Treatment is based on factors such as the client's willingness to pay for expensive therapy and the ability to physically comply with daily regimens; however, treatment of onychomycosis in clients with chronic illnesses including diabetes and peripheral vascular disease should be strongly

Onychomycosis, a common fungal nail infection, can present unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in special populations including the elderly, children, individuals with diabetes, immunocompromised patients, and those with compromised organ function or psoriasis. These groups face increased susceptibility due to factors such as impaired immunity, vascular insufficiency, comorbidities, and altered nail morphology. Despite its often-benign perception, untreated onychomycosis in these populations can lead to complications, including secondary infection, ulceration, and systemic spread. Acc

Onychomycosis is one of the most frequent nail pathologies in podiatry practices. Differential diagnoses with the clinical presentation may delay an accurate diagnosis and timely treatment. This article discusses the technique and benefits of using a dermatoscope to improve patient care of this common disorder.

Onychomycosis is a difficult to treat fungal infection of the nails. The chronic nature of onychomycosis contributes to high recurrence rates and the difficulty in treating both dermatophyte and non-dermatophyte infections. It has been hypothesized that the formation of biofilms, sessile, multicellular communities of fungi surrounded by a protective extracellular matrix, allow for fungi to evade current antifungal therapies and contribute to observed antifungal resistance. This review presents the experimental evidence that has accumulated in recent years implicating biofilms in the pathogenes

Onychomycosis is a frequent disorder, which accounts for approximately 50% of nail changes. Many patients are treated for onychomycosis without a mycological verification being done. The patients may be in risk of being treated for a non-existent fungal infection with lack of effect and potential adverse events. This review highlights the importance of choosing the correct sampling and diagnostic methods, as genus and/or species identification is essential when choosing the optimal treatment strategies.

Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections) is very common worldwide but is fortunately not often lethal. Several powerful drugs have been introduced into clinical practice in recent years, but these infections remain difficult to cure primarily due to the difficulty of penetration of drug to the site of the infection in therapeutic concentrations. The nature of the disease, the causative fungi, and the characteristics of the drugs employed to treat this condition are discussed in this review.

Onychomycosis is considered an age-related infection with increasing prevalence in the older age groups. It is rare in the pediatric population, except in children with Down syndrome and with immunodeficiencies, who are more likely to have fungal nail infections. The number of reports about onychomycosis in children is relatively small, and the epidemiologic data vary, but a rise in prevalence has been demonstrated. In this article, we review the most up-to-date literature and summarize the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of onychomycosis in children, as
