Percutaneous Reduction of Displaced Radial Neck Fractures Achieves Better Results Compared With Fractures Treated by Open Reduction.

There is uniform agreement in the literature that radial neck fracture with <30 degrees of angulation and minimal translation in younger children can be managed by casting alone, without the need for closed reduction. For more severe fractures, closed manipulation techniques followed by percutaneous reduction technique (in case closed reduction fails) should be performed before switching to an open reduction technique. Debate still exists regarding the best treatment protocol for severely displaced fractures. Although some surgeons favor open reduction with the argument that repeat manipulatio

Ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation in patients with cerebral palsy.

AIM: To examine patients with cerebral palsy (CP) undergoing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for ankle fractures. METHOD: This was a retrospective study of adult patients undergoing ankle fracture ORIF for closed, isolated ankle fractures identified in between 2010 and 2021 in the Q1 PearlDiver M151 database. Patients with CP were identified with International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 and ICD-10 codes, and were matched to those without 1:10 on age, sex, and Elixhauser comorbidity index (ECI). Ninety-day adverse events were assessed with multivariable logistic regression.

Outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humerus fracture dislocations.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humeral fracture with associated glenohumeral dislocation (PHFD) is a challenging clinical problem. Outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of these injuries have not been widely reported. The purpose of this analysis is to report our experience with ORIF of PHFD. METHODS: A retrospective review of our 2 institutions' shoulder surgery databases was conducted to identify all PHFDs that were treated with ORIF from 2008 through 2017. Radiographs were reviewed for fracture healing by 12 weeks postoperatively. All reoperations were recorded. Patient-reported

Open Reduction and Suture Fixation of Acute Sternoclavicular Fracture-Dislocations in Children.

BACKGROUND: Acute sternoclavicular fracture-dislocation is associated with high-energy trauma and is being increasingly recognized in children1. These injuries are associated with compression of mediastinal structures and can be life-threatening1. The management of acute sternoclavicular fracture-dislocation includes closed reduction or open surgical stabilization; however, limited success is reported with closed reduction2,3. To our knowledge, there are no detailed descriptions of open reduction and suture fixation of acute sternoclavicular fracture-dislocation in children. DESCRIPTION: Foll

Missed Monteggia fracture dislocations treated by open reduction of the radial head.

AIMS: Delayed diagnosis is a well-known complication of a Monteggia fracture-dislocation. If left untreated, the dislocated radial head later becomes symptomatic. The purposes of this study were firstly, to evaluate the clinical and radiological results of open reduction of the radial head and secondly, to identify the factors that may affect the outcome of this procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 30 children with a chronic Monteggia lesion. There were 18 boys and 12 girls with a mean age of 7.4 years (4 to 13) at the time of open reduction. The mean interval

Open Reduction Internal Fixation of a Bimalleolar Ankle Fracture With Syndesmotic Injury.

Rotational ankle fractures are incredibly common, resulting in a wide spectrum of bony and ligamentous injury patterns. After open reduction of an ankle fracture, the treating surgeon must always evaluate syndesmotic stability. If the syndesmosis is determined to be unstable, a reduction of the distal tibiofibular joint should be performed. Failure to adequately identify and treat injuries to the syndesmosis may result in continued ankle instability and poor patient outcomes. Lateral fluoroscopic images are necessary to assess a closed reduction of the syndesmosis before stabilization, althoug

Open reduction by vestibular approach in the treatment of segmental alveolar fracture.

Fracture of the alveolar process is a common injury; the majority of alveolar fractures may be managed by closed reduction. However, some cases with severe segmental alveolar fracture cannot be reduced by close reduction, usually resulting in occlusion disturbance. This article describes open reduction by vestibular approach in the treatment of severe segmental alveolar fractures, with the aim of evaluating the prognosis. Fifteen patients with severe segmental alveolar fractures that could not be reduced by closed method were included in our case series. Open reduction by vestibular approach w

Trans-Scaphoid Perilunate Fracture Dislocation Managed With Open Reduction: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The management of gap non-union patella fractures continues to be a challenge in orthopedics. The incidence of these cases ranges between 2.7% and 12.5%. The quadriceps muscle attached to the proximal fractured fragment pulls it proximally leading to the gap at fracture site. If the gap is too large, there won't be any fibrous union resulting in failure of quadriceps mechanism and extension lag. The primary aim is to bring the fracture fragments together and restore the extensor mechanism. Most of the surgeons prefer single-stage procedure, in which mobilization of the proximal f

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Patella Fracture With Contoured Dorsal Plating.

In this article, we present a novel patella fixation technique using a low-profile highly contoured dorsal mini-fragment locking plate. This procedure is ideally indicated in patients with fracture patterns that are transverse without significant comminution. Long-term clinical studies are being performed to evaluate the effectiveness of this surgical technique.

Displaced fracture of the femoral neck in children: open versus closed reduction.

We have investigated whether early anatomical open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) reduces the incidence of complications of fracture of the femoral neck in children, including avascular necrosis, compared with closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF). We retrospectively reviewed 27 such fractures (15 type-II and 12 type-III displaced fractures) in children younger than 16 years of age seen in our hospital between February 1989 and March 2007. We divided the patients into three groups according to the quality of the reduction (anatomical, acceptable, and unacceptable) and the clini

Incidence of Loss of Reduction After Open Reduction Internal Fixation of Metacarpal Shaft Fractures.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the incidence of loss of reduction (LOR) between metacarpal fractures fixed with screws alone and those fixed with plates and screws. Secondary aims included identifying patient or fracture characteristics associated with increased risk of LOR. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 138 metacarpal fractures in 106 patients treated with open reduction internal fixation with screws (60 fractures) or plates and screws (78 fractures) with a mean radiographic follow-up of 50 days for evidence of LOR. We compared the incidence of LOR between the screw and plate groups

Displaced supracondylar humeral fractures in children: open reduction vs. closed reduction and pinning.

INTRODUCTION: In the literature the best results for pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures have been achieved by closed reduction and wire fixation. However, in these reports the patient group of open reduction and pinning contained the patients who had had previous ineffective closed reduction trials. This retrospective study compared open and closed reduction with pinning, in which the first group of patients was all consecutively treated with open reduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 99 children with displaced extension-type supracondylar fractures of humerus who had co
