The Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation 2008-2020: Approaches, Experiences, Lessons, and Recommendations.

For the past 10 years, the Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE), funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been supporting operational research to provide a stronger evidence base for controlling and moving toward elimination of schistosomiasis. The SCORE portfolio was developed and implemented with engagement from many stakeholders and sectors. Particular efforts were made to include endemic country neglected tropical disease program managers. Examples of the challenges we encountered include the need to balance rigor (e.g., conducting large clus

Opioid substitution therapy in manipur and nagaland, north-east india: operational research in action.

BACKGROUND: There is good evidence for the effectiveness of opioid substitution therapy (OST) for injecting drug users (IDUs) in middle and high-income countries but little evidence regarding the provision of OST by non-government organisations (NGOs) in resource-poor settings. This paper reports on outcomes of an NGO-based OST program providing sub-lingual buprenorphine to opiate dependent IDUs in two north-east Indian states (Manipur and Nagaland), a region where conflict, under-development and injecting of heroin and Spasmoproxyvon (SP) are ongoing problems. The objectives of the study were

The INTERSALT study: background, methods and main results. INTERSALT Co-operative Research Group.

The INTERSALT study used standardised methods to assess the relations of electrolyte intake and blood pressure, taking account of confounding variables, in samples of men and women aged 20-59 drawn from defined populations in 52 centres and 32 countries (10,079 individuals). Sodium excretion was significantly related to blood pressure in individuals. Corrected estimates (probably still too low) indicated, on multiple regression, that a difference of 100 mmol/day in average population sodium intake corresponded to 2.2 mmHg lower systolic pressure. Sodium excretion across centres, with median le

Road map to scaling-up: translating operations research study's results into actions for expanding medical abortion services in rural health facilities in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Identifying unsafe abortion among the major causes of maternal deaths and respecting the rights to health of women, in 2002, the Nepali parliament liberalized abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy on request. However, enhancing women's awareness on and access to safe and legal abortion services, particularly in rural areas, remains a challenge in Nepal despite a decade of the initiation of safe abortion services. METHODS: Between January 2011 and December 2012, an operations research study was carried out using quasi-experimental design to determine the effectiveness of engaging fe

Faith Leaders Improve Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy: Results of Operations Research on the Channels of Hope Methodology in Kenya and Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Family planning averts unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and maternal deaths, while improving child health and socio-economic progress, but an estimated 218 million women and girls in low- and middle-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, have an unmet need for modern family planning. Faith leaders can impact the demand and uptake of family planning. However, there is limited understanding of the mechanisms for effective family planning advocacy by faith leaders. Channels of Hope (CoH) is World Vision's process that engages faith leaders and faith communities t

Improved Utilisation and Quality of Blood Culture Services Following Operational Research in a Tertiary Hospital in Ghana.

Operational research (OR) published in 2023 revealed low utilisation and suboptimal quality of blood culture services at a tertiary hospital in Ghana. To address these, several interventions were implemented, including sensitisation of physicians, training of laboratory staff, use of automated incubation systems, and improved availability of laboratory consumables. To assess the impact of these interventions, we conducted a follow-up study in a cross-section of inpatients (n = 1080) with suspected bloodstream infections (BSI) admitted in 2024. There were three key changes. First, there was a f

Quickest way to less headache days: an operational research model and its implementation for chronic migraine.

OBJECTIVE: Choosing migraine prevention medications often involves trial and error. Operations research methodologies, however, allow us to derive a mathematically optimum way to conduct such trial and error processes. BACKGROUND: Given probability of success (defined as 50% reduction in headache days) and adverse events as a function of time, we seek to develop and solve an operations research model, applicable to any arbitrary patient, minimizing time until discovery of an effective migraine prevention medication. We then seek to apply our model to real life data for chronic migraine preven

A machine learning perspective on three decades of methanol synthesis: research framework and experimental operation insights.

Heterogeneous catalysis optimization relies on the coordinated selection of catalyst composition, synthesis procedure, and reaction conditions, yet the empirical links between these variables and catalytic performance remain scattered across individual studies. Here, we show that an interpretable machine learning (ML) framework can decode this complexity by integrating disparate literature data. We curate, to our knowledge, the first unified dataset from 200 papers spanning three decades of CO2-to-methanol synthesis over Cu/ZnO-based catalysts, and derive a subset of apparent activation energy

Strengthening operational research to complement Global Fund grants for HIV, TB and malaria in Sierra Leone.

This issue of Public Health Action (PHA) includes the first of a series of articles that provide evidence-based answers to questions raised by health workers on addressing HIV, TB and malaria on the frontlines in Sierra Leone. The research was conducted as part of a SORT IT course, which is a partnership-based initiative led by TDR and implemented with various partners. SORT IT aims to make countries 'data rich, information rich and action rich' to improve health care delivery and outcomes. The course in Sierra Leone brought together 19 institutions to foster global engagement, partnerships an

Pushing the Button: One Speech-Language Pathologist Researcher's Journey to Operating a Fluoroscope for Swallow Studies.

PURPOSE: Videofluoroscopy is an invaluable tool in the study of swallowing physiology. It is not without risks, however, primarily from exposure to ionizing radiation. As such, regulation across states within the United States and institutional policies are in place to protect patients, research participants, and occupational users from the negative effects of radiation exposure. These regulations restrict those who can "push the button" to energize the x-ray machines during radiographic studies, typically to licensed physicians and radiologic technologists. While recognizing the importance of

Research on Mental Workload of Deep-Sea Oceanauts Driving Operation Tasks from EEG Data.

A person's present mental state is closely associated with the frequency and temporal domain features of spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) impulses, which directly reflect neurophysiological signals of brain activity. EEG signals are employed in this study to measure the mental workload of drivers while they are operating a vehicle. A technique based on the quantum genetic algorithm (QGA) is suggested for improving the kernel function parameters of the multi-class support vector machine (MSVM). The performance of the algorithm based on the quantum genetic algorithm is found to be superior

Passive Screening and Diagnosis of Sleeping Sickness with New Tools in Primary Health Services: An Operational Research.

INTRODUCTION: The integration of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) activities into primary health services is gaining importance as a result of the decreasing incidence of HAT and the ongoing developments of new screening and diagnostic tools. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, this integration process faces multiple challenges. We initiated an operational research project to document drivers and bottlenecks of the process. METHODS: Three health districts piloted the integration of HAT screening and diagnosis into primary health services. We analysed the outcome indicators of this interve
