Age-related Psychometric Dimensionality Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition Opioid Use Disorder Diagnostic Criteria.

OBJECTIVES: Age-related psychometric differences in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition ( DSM-5 ) opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnostic criteria have been hypothesized, but not been tested. This study investigated DSM-5 OUD diagnostic criteria for age-related measurement noninvariance among younger adults (YAs) and middle/older adults (MOAs) with past 12-month nonmedical use of prescription opioids. METHODS: People who participated in the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III and reported past 12-month nonmedical use of pre

Pathways between nonmedical opioid use/dependence and psychiatric disorders: results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND: While nonmedical use of opioids and psychiatric disorders are prevalent in the population, little is known about the temporal ordering between nonmedical opioid use and dependence and psychiatric disorders. METHOD: Data were gathered in a face-to-face survey of the United States conducted in the 2001-2002 (NESARC wave 1). Participants were household and group quarters residents aged 18 years and older (n=43,093). Cox proportional hazards models with time-dependent covariates were used to investigate potential pathways between lifetime nonmedical opioid use/dependence and psychiatr

Cannabis-Related Disorders Are Associated With Increased Early Postoperative Opioid Prescriptions and Delayed Emergency Department Visits Following Open Carpal Tunnel Release.

BACKGROUND: The effect of cannabis on pain management following open carpal tunnel release (CTR) surgery is unknown. The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes for patients with cannabis-related disorder (CRD) undergoing open CTR to a propensity-matched cohort of patients without CRD (no cannabis-related disorder [NCRD]). METHODS: The TriNetX Research Network was queried to identify patients undergoing primary open CTR between January 2010 and December 2022. Patients with CRD were propensity matched to a NCRD cohort in a 1:1 ratio based on 7 characteristics. Rates of postoperative opioi

Are experiences of sexual violence related to special needs in patients with substance use disorders? A study in opioid-dependent patients.

A history of sexual violence has been related to more complex treatment needs in patients with substance use disorders (SUD). Most of the existing studies, however, included patients with various types of SUD, did not examine gender differences and focused on a small range of clinical domains. Our sample consisted of opioid-dependent outpatients treated during a three-year period in a German metropolitan region. The analysis was based on a local case register and included all patients for whom information on lifetime sexual violence was available (N=3531; 68.3% males). In a case-control design

Association between oral and general health related quality of life among Norwegian patients with substance use disorders in opioid agonist therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Assess the association between oral and general health related quality of life using oral impacts on daily performances (OIDP) and the quality of life tool EQ-5D-5L from EuroQoL among patients with substance use disorder (SUD) who receive opioid agonist therapy. METHOD: 609 patients with SUD completed the EQ-5D-5L. A dental sub-study of 167 patients completed OIDP and an oral examination when attending outpatient clinics in Western Norway for their opioid agonist therapy. The merged analytical sample consisted of 165 patients. The association between OIDP and EQ-5D-5L was assessed

Organizational perspectives on barriers and facilitators to an integrated care model for opioid use disorder and serious injection-related infections.

BACKGROUND: Rising rates of serious injection-related infections (SIRI) and hospitalizations have been documented nationally in the context of the ongoing opioid and polysubstance use epidemic in the United States. This qualitative interview study assessed multi-level facilitators and barriers to the implementation of an integrated inpatient opioid use disorder (OUD) and SIRI care intervention among organizational stakeholders in the healthcare setting as a secondary aim of a randomized clinical trial. METHODS: The PRISM (Practical, Robust, Implementation, and Sustainability Model) implementa

Task-related differences in network connectivity and dynamics in people with severe opioid use disorder compared with healthy controls.

One approach to addressing the immense unmet need for treatments of severe opioid use disorder (sOUD) is to understand more about associated changes in the brain's reward circuitry. It has been shown that during reward anticipation in the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task, people with severe substance use disorder (SUD) show blunted responses in reward neural circuitry compared with healthy controls (HC). Conversely, drug-related cues result in heightened responses in the same neural reward circuitry in those with SUD compared with HC. However, it is unclear how such dysfunctional reward pro

Death anxiety and death-related depression in opioid use disorder: relationships with suicidal ideation, impulsivity, and psychological resilience.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is associated with elevated suicide and impulsivity risks, yet the underlying existential vulnerabilities remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine death anxiety and death-related depression as potential mechanisms associated with suicidal ideation and impulsivity in OUD, and to evaluate the protective role of psychological resilience. METHODS: Participants included 86 individuals with OUD in remission (under buprenorphine/naloxone treatment) and 86 healthy controls. Self-report measures assessed death anxiety, death-related depression, suicidal i

Sex and Gender Differences in Weight-Related Biopsychosocial Factors Among Adults Receiving Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is the most efficacious treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). MOUD uptake and continuation may be impacted by health concerns, including weight gain, and social factors, such as food insecurity, that vary between men and women. This study aimed to describe sex and gender differences in body mass index (BMI) and weight-related demographic, psychosocial, and clinical characteristics among adults receiving buprenorphine for OUD. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from a cross-sectional survey and prospective medical record review

Association of opioid receptor gene polymorphisms with drinking severity and impulsivity related to alcohol use disorder in a Korean population.

AIMS: Recent evidence suggests that the opioid system is implicated in the pathophysiology of alcohol use disorder (AUD). We aimed to examine the genetic influence of opioid receptors on susceptibility to AUD and its clinical and psychological characteristics including harmful drinking behavior and various aspects of impulsivity in AUD patients. METHODS: Three μ-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) variants and two κ-opioid receptor gene (OPRK1) variants were examined in 314 male patients with AUD and 324 male controls. We applied the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), Obsessive Compu

Ethical conflict of advanced practice providers related to drug testing and reporting for maternity patients with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Advanced practice maternity providers (APPs; midwives, nurse practitioners, physician associates) have described decision-making about drug testing and child welfare system (CWS) reporting as a source of ethical conflict. Ethical conflict in clinical practice is linked to provider burnout and poor patient outcomes. However, ethical conflict related to drug testing and reporting across APPs caring for pregnant and postpartum patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) has not been quantitatively evaluated. PURPOSE: This study describes the amount and types of ethical conflict experienc

Determinants of health-related quality of life among individuals with opioid use disorder, recently released from incarceration.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND\OBJECTIVES: Concomitant with low rates of pharmacotherapy for incarcerated individuals with OUD, there is a high rate of opioid overdose following re-entry into the community. Our research objective was to develop a better understanding of the factors that influence health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) among this population during the high-risk transition period from incarceration to community. Few studies have assessed health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) among individuals with OUD who are involved with the criminal-legal system, let alone over the period directly s

Fibromyalgia predicts increased odds of pain-related addiction exacerbation among individuals with pain and opioid use disorder.

Fibromyalgia and opioid use disorder (OUD) are highly impactful chronic illnesses with substantially overlapping psychosocial, biological, and clinical features. Little previous research has examined interactions between fibromyalgia and OUD. Limiting such research has been the previous requirement of a clinical examination to diagnose fibromyalgia. The 2011 American College of Rheumatology Fibromyalgia Survey (ACR-FMS) is a validated self-report instrument with high sensitivity and specificity for fibromyalgia intended to enable fibromyalgia research in settings where a clinical examination i

Impact of opioid-related disorders on complications in patients undergoing bariatric surgery: a propensity score-matched analysis of the national inpatient sample.

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis caused a huge health concern in the United States. Despite this, few studies have examined the influence of opioid-related disorders (OD) on outcomes after bariatric surgery. The major goal of this study is to determine the impact of OD on in-hospital outcomes for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. METHOD: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2016 to 2020 was used to evaluate patients with OD who underwent bariatric operations including sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.
