Application of the photon average trajectories method to real-time reconstruction of tissue inhomogeneities in diffuse optical tomography of strongly scattering media.

The possibility of application of the photon average trajectories (PAT) method to real-time reconstruction of tissue inhomogeneities in diffuse optical tomography of strongly scattering media has been substantiated. By this method, the inverse problem is reduced to solution of the integral equation with integration along a conditional PAT. Such an approach allows the standard fast algebraic algorithms commonly used in projection computed tomography to be applied to diffuse optical image reconstruction. To demonstrate the capabilities of the PAT method, a numerical experiment on cross-sectional

Extended field-of-view two-photon imaging in the deep brain of freely behaving mice using lightweight microfabricated corrective optics.

Investigating neural circuits underlying complex behavior requires high-resolution imaging of large neuronal populations during naturalistic conditions. Miniaturized two-photon microscopes (MINI2Ps) enable deep brain imaging in freely moving animals when coupled with gradient index (GRIN)-based microendoscopes. However, intrinsic optical aberrations in GRIN-based microendoscopes degrade spatial resolution and limit the effective field-of-view (FOV). Here, we address these limitations using lightweight microfabricated optics to correct GRIN aberrations during deep brain MINI2P imaging. The aber

Engineering nonlinear optical absorption through slow-photon effects in calix[4]resorcinarene-based nonlinear distributed Bragg reflectors.

Periodic dielectric nanophotonic structures provide an effective platform for enhancing light-matter interactions and tailoring nonlinear optical responses at low excitation powers. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced nonlinear optical absorption and improved optical limiting behaviour of C-4 methoxyphenylcalix[4]resorcinarene (CMPCR) using a nonlinear distributed Bragg reflector (NDBR) fabricated by alternate spin coating of poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and CMPCR-incorporated cellulose acetate (CA) layers. The NDBR was designed such that its short-wavelength photonic band edge coincides wit

Bioinspired core-shell photonic crystal microneedle patch for real-time optical monitoring of drug release in jellyfish envenomation therapy.

The increasing incidence of jellyfish stings from expanding global marine activities necessitates painless therapeutic strategies with real-time treatment assessment capabilities. Here, we present a bioinspired core-shell photonic crystal microneedle (PCMN) patch that addresses this need through dual functionality of both therapeutic delivery and optically transduced monitoring. This device is fabricated by coating hyaluronic acid (HA) shells onto non-close-packed PCMN cores, which are functionalized with chlorpheniramine, while the HA shells incorporate lidocaine as a pain management payload.

MediONN: an integrated photonic chip optical neural network for deep learning-based semantic segmentation in early detection of pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers due to the lack of effective early detection tools. While deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown promise in tumor segmentation, electronic accelerators suffer from power inefficiency and latency. To address this, we propose MediONN-a photonic neural network system implemented on an integrated chip, optimized for 3D medical image segmentation. MediONN integrates a 4×4 photonic neural processor within a hierarchical 3D optical computation framework. To improve training convergence, we introduce a segmentation-specific Gaussian weight initial

MoS2-functionalized analyte-defect-cavity Si/SiO2 one-dimensional photonic crystal biosensor for chemical detection with thermo-optic response.

A MoS2-functionalized Si/SiO2 one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D-PC) biosensor is proposed for chemical sensing applications and analyzed using the transfer matrix method (TMM). The structure consists of alternating Si/SiO2 dielectric layers forming top and bottom Bragg mirrors, with a central MoS2-functionalized analyte defect cavity introduced between them to generate a localized defect-mode resonance and enhance analyte interaction. The sensing mechanism is governed by concentration-induced refractive-index modulation within the analyte defect cavity, where the MoS2 monolayer acts as an a

EXPRESS: A Novel Er3+ Doped SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-CaO Glass Materials for Near-Infrared Photonic Applications: Unveiling the Structural, Optical Absorption, Optical Bandgap Energy, Photoluminescence, and Spectroscopic Properties.

Although Er3+-doped glasses have been shown to be capable of producing an excellent combination of near-infrared and visible emissions; a number of conventional glass matrices are hampered by low levels of solubility for rare earths, concentration quenching, and poor structural uniformity which result in lower than desired optical quality. Furthermore, there is still a lack of systematic understanding regarding how modifications to the structure of aluminosilicate glasses influence their spectroscopic properties. Therefore, this investigation sought to develop and optimize a new series of Er3+

Dengue disease detection via a minimal area 2D photonic crystal nanocavity-based refractive index optical biosensor: numerical analysis.

Despite advancements in optical biosensing technologies, existing methods for detecting dengue-infected blood components often lack the sensitivity and precision required for early diagnosis, emphasizing the necessity of better sensor designs. A compact photonic crystal nanocavity-based optical sensor has been designed to detect dengue-infected blood components. The simulation is performed using the finite-difference time-domain numerical technique with a Gaussian source. The transmission spectrum and corresponding resonance shifts have been analyzed to evaluate the proposed sensor's performan

Optic nerve sheath meningioma detected by single- photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography somatostatin receptor scintigraphy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve sheath meningiomas account for only 2% of orbital lesions and 42% of optic nerve tumors. Diagnosis remains difficult because histologic confirmation carries a high risk of visual loss. Therefore, a less invasive and specific diagnostic method for differentiating optic nerve sheath meningiomas from other optic nerve lesions is needed to overcome the limitations of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and make the best individualized treatment decision. This case is a good illustration of the clinical and imaging difficulties inherent in this rare tumor, wh

Dopant-induced transition from genuine to sequential two-photon absorption in Sm3+/Eu3+ co-doped GdPO4 nanostructures for efficient optical limiting.

The development of efficient optical limiting materials has gained considerable attention due to their critical role in safeguarding human eyes, skin and sensitive optoelectronics from harmful class 3B laser exposure. Pristine and doped GdPO4 based nanostructures have not been explored for (nonlinear optical) NLO application. Herein, we explore a Sm3+/Eu3+ co-doped gadolinium (Gd) based orthophosphate for NLO based on the two photon absorption (2PA) mechanism. The influence of Sm3+/Eu3+ co-doping on the transition from genuine to sequential 2PA in GdPO4 nanostructures is systematically investi

Detective quantum efficiency (DQE)-oriented design of a transparent scintillator tandem x-ray/optical microscope for photon-starved 7.2-keV radiography at the National Ignition Facility (NIF).

X-ray radiography at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) must simultaneously achieve micron-scale spatial resolution and adequate signal-to-noise ratio with a limited number of 7.2-keV photons. To address this coupled resolution-throughput challenge, we developed a scintillator-based x-ray imager using a tandem microscope architecture. A curved Bragg-crystal x-ray microscope forms a magnified 7.2-keV image on a transparent thallium-doped cesium iodide [CsI(Tl)] scintillator, and a visible-light microscope relays the scintillation image to an oversampled complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor

Tunable optical and photovoltaic performance in PTB7-based colored semi-transparent organic solar cells integrated MgF2/WO3 1D-photonic crystals via advanced light management.

This study explores the design, fabrication, and characterization of PTB7-based colored semi-transparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) with integrated MgF2/WO3 one-dimensional photonic crystals (1D-PCs). Integrating 1D-PCs enhanced light management by creating tunable photonic band gaps, leading to extraordinary color change and improved photon harvesting. For 1DPC5 - 425 the Average Visible Transmittance (AVT) values were 33.3%, and CIE x, y was 0.43, 0.52, for 1DPC3 - 650 AVT were 25.09% and CIE x, y was 0.23, 0.27, respectively. Thus, extraordinary color changes from blue to yellow could be

Selective imaging of active pharmaceutical ingredients in powdered blends with common excipients utilizing two-photon excited ultraviolet-fluorescence and ultraviolet-second order nonlinear optical imaging of chiral crystals.

Second order nonlinear optical imaging of chiral crystals (SONICC) and two-photon excited fluorescence measurements [both autofluorescence and two-photon excited UV-fluorescence (TPE-UVF)] were assessed for the selective detection of APIs relative to common pharmaceutical excipients. Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) compose only a small percentage of most tabulated formulations, yet the API distribution within the tablet can affect drug release and tablet stability. Complementary measurements using either UV-SONICC (266 nm detection) or TPE-UVF were shown to generate signals >50-fold m

Exciton-Photonics: From Fundamental Science to Applications.

Semiconductors in all dimensionalities ranging from 0D quantum dots and molecules to 3D bulk crystals support bound electron-hole pair quasiparticles termed excitons. Over the past two decades, the emergence of a variety of low-dimensional semiconductors that support excitons combined with advances in nano-optics and photonics has burgeoned an advanced area of research that focuses on engineering, imaging, and modulating the coupling between excitons and photons, resulting in the formation of hybrid quasiparticles termed exciton-polaritons. This advanced area has the potential to bring about a

Exciton transport driven by spin excitations in an antiferromagnet.

Optical quasiparticles called magnetic excitons recently emerged in magnetic van der Waals materials. Akin to the highly effective strategies developed for electrons, the strong interactions of these excitons with the spin degree of freedom may provide innovative solutions for long-standing challenges in optics, such as steering the flow of energy and information. Here we demonstrate the transport of excitons by spin excitations in the van der Waals antiferromagnetic semiconductor CrSBr. Our observations reveal ultrafast, nearly isotropic exciton propagation, substantially enhanced at the Néel
