A Case of Congenital Midline Upper Lip Fistula.

Herein, we describe the case of a 33-year-old woman with a rare 16-mm congenital midline upper lip fistula with a broad, cystic lumen. No connection with the oral cavity was observed. Congenital midline upper lip fistulas are not clearly associated with hereditary factors or sex. Sinus computed tomography revealed an inner ear malformation; however, no associations between external and inner ear malformations and upper lip fistulas have been reported. Because the developmental processes of the upper lip and inner ear are different, each develops independently, as in the current case. The stand

Early feeding after free flap reconstruction of the oral cavity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, patients undergoing free flap reconstruction for oral cavity defects have been given nothing by mouth for 6-14 days post-operatively due to concern for orocutaneous fistula development. METHODS: Multiple databases were screened for studies assessing the rate of orocutaneous fistula formation in early (≤5 days) versus late (>5 days) feeding groups following oral cavity free flap reconstruction. Fixed- and random-effects meta-analyses were used. RESULTS: One randomized controlled trial, one prospective cohort, and three retrospective cohort studies were included. The

Treatment of an oronasal fistula in a patient on bisphosphonate therapy: A case study.

Bisphophonates (BPs) are a group of drugs used in treating bone diseases, which may lead to the development of the osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). The negative impact of BPs on angiogenesis is among the causes of ONJ. The specific mechanisms of complications are unknown. What is taken into consideration is the trauma background, which, in combination with the implemented BP treatment, can induce bone necrosis. One of the possible consequences of necrotic change progression is the development of an oronasal fistula. Treatment generally requires a surgical intervention. The paper describes the co

Individualized Stent for Tracheal Fistula Complicating Tracheostomy Following Esophagectomy.

Delayed-onset tracheal fistula following esophagectomy with concurrent tracheostomy is rare and poses diagnostic challenges. A 79-year-old female patient with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) developed a tracheal fistula following esophagectomy and tracheostomy. Repeated bronchoscopies via the tracheostoma failed to visualize the fistula orifice; the diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography (CT) with oral contrast medium and complete tracheal inspection following temporary removal of the tracheostomy tube. A patient-specific, fully covered self-expandable metallic stent (FCSEMS

A case of refractory perforation at the floor of the mouth with ectopic bone formation.

Although most fistulae are not problematic, surgeons occasionally encounter recurrent and/or refractory fistulae in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In this case report, the authors describe a case in which a patient experienced a recurrent and refractory fistula or perforation at his oral floor through the submandible, with heterotopic bone formation arising on both sides of the mylohyoid line. These heterotopic bones were connected to each other, forming a bone bridge at the center of the oral floor. A fistulectomy and wound closure with a tongue flap was successful. The perforat

Double palatal flap for oro-nasal fistula closure.

INTRODUCTION: The management of oral fistula to the nose depends on its etiology, its size and its location. Here, we describe a simple technique, inspired by the ones initially developed by Bardach for cleft palates repair. The surgical alternatives are discussed. TECHNICAL NOTE: The double palatal flap is a simple technique, allowing closure in a single session of a central or centro-lateral palate fistula. The key of this technique is the dissection between nasal and palate mucous layers, providing a sufficient amount of laxity to close the defect without tension. DISCUSSION: The double p

Behçet's disease combined with various types of fistula.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic, relapsing, multisystem disorder, characterized by recurrent oral ulcer, genital ulcers, eye lesion, and skin lesion. The underlying pathology is nonspecific vasculitis of all vessel sizes, and severe vasculitis can result in fistula formation of neighboring tissues due to a necrotic process. Herein, eleven cases of BD combined with fistula are presented. In the present study, various types of fistula were associated; enterocutaneous fistula in six patients, and rectovaginal fistula in two. The other three patients showed aortoduodenal fistula, urethrovaginal

Vascularized Fascia Lata for Prevention of Postoperative Parotid Fistula Arising From Partial Parotidectomy During Neck Dissection.

PURPOSE: Postoperative parotid fistula can occur after partial parotidectomy, which is a routine surgical procedure during neck dissection of oral cancers arising from or close to the oropharyngeal area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of vascularized fascia lata for the prevention of postoperative parotid fistula after neck dissection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients with oral cancer who underwent ablative resection involving the parotid tail and reconstruction using the anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap with a vascularized fascia la

Self-Curing Glass Ionomer Cement Covered by Photopolymerizable Adhesive for Protection of Mucoperiosteal or Gingival Flap Sutures in Canine Oral Surgery.

Periodontal disease is one of the main affections of the oral cavity of dogs. Its main complication is the formation of periapical abscess, which, when affecting the maxillary canine teeth, can lead to the formation of oronasal fistulae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of self-curing glass ionomer cement, covered by photopolymerizable adhesive, as a protective element for mucoperiosteal or gingival flap sutures in oral surgery of dogs. We studied 15 dogs from the clinical routine of the dental service of a teaching veterinary hospital, which needed oral surgeries to

Dacryoendoscopy for dacryocystitis management in a dog: A case report.

A castrated, mixed-breed, 10-year-old male dog developed a skin fistula from a ruptured periorbital swelling on the right eye; the patient was successfully treated with dacryoendoscope-guided cannulation using a nasolacrimal tube. On presentation, computed tomography with concurrent dacryocystography (CT-DCG) revealed obstruction of the right nasolacrimal duct and abnormal flow of contrast agents towards the root of tooth 109 at the right maxillary bone; however, the origin of the fistula remained unclear on CT-DCG. Dacryoendoscopy was used to confirm the physical association between the fistu

Surgical treatment of esophago-vertebral fistula and vertebral osteomyelitis after voice prosthesis insertion.

Voice prosthesis (VP) insertion is a common method for post-laryngectomy voice restoration, as it facilitates immediate tracheoesophageal speech acquisition. Although it is a minimally invasive procedure, VP insertion occasionally leads to severe complications. We report a case of esophago-vertebral fistula with vertebral osteomyelitis caused by VP mechanical irritation. A 61-year-old man with multimorbidity developed hypopharyngeal stenosis after chemoradiotherapy for hypopharyngeal and esophageal cancer and underwent total pharyngolaryngectomy with free jejunal transfer. After one year, a VP

Fistulae After Successful Free Tissue Transfer to Head and Neck: Its Prevention and Treatment.

Fistulas, either between oral cavity and external face or between oral and nasal cavity, are major complications after microsurgical head and neck reconstruction. Any flaw in surgical planning, design, and execution may lead to this untoward outcome. Once fistula develops, it may interface with oncologic treatment, endanger the reconstruction, and increase overall patient suffering. This article analyzes individual factors involved in development of fistulas in spite of successful transfer of a free flap and proposes treatment guideline.

Pulse granuloma in a rectocutaneous fistula.

Pulse granulomas are rare foreign body reactions to vegetable material characterized by hyaline rings or starch granules. Pulse granulomas have mainly been reported in association with lung aspirations, the oral cavity with a history of oral procedures and less frequently in intestinal fistulae, colonic diverticulae or stomach ulcers. Only one case involving the skin has been reported in a patient with jejunocutaneous and ileocutaneous fistulae. We report the second cutaneous pulse granuloma in a patient with a rectocutaneous fistula.

[Hard palate fistula and nasal septum perforation after leukemia infection: report of one case].

Most of palatal fistula occur from poor repairation of cleft palate, leaving an abnormal channel between mouth and nose. Palatal fistula can cause a series of complications, such as voice and hearing disorder, poor oral and nasal hygiene, psychological diseases and so on. However, hard palate fistula secondary to Leukemia infection is rarely seen, it hasn't been reported yet. We report one case with hard palate fistula and nasal septum perforation after Leukemia infection.

Early oral feeding following total laryngectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Pharyngocutaneous fistula is one of the most common nonfatal laryngectomy complications (7.6% to 65% of all total patients). Preoperative radiotherapy, advanced tumor stage, poor preoperative medical status, and concomitant pharyngectomy are usually accepted causative factors in fistula formation. Delay of oral feeding is a common practice used by head and neck surgeons to prevent the development of pharyngocutaneous fistula. In this article we analyze our experience with special emphasis given to the early start of postoperative feeding. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The postoperative

Congenital parotid gland fistula.

A rare case of congenital parotid gland fistula is reported. A 4-year-old boy presented with a fistula opening at the facial surface of the skin posterior to the left commissure of the lips. This fistula originated from an accessory parotid gland with a duct entirely distinct from the original Stensen's duct. Because of the salivary outflow from the fistula opening, the opening was translocated to the oral cavity using Delore's method.

[Clinical experience with silicon pharyngeal tube for pharyngocutaneous fistula and cervical esophagus stenosis].

Total laryngectomy or laryngopharyngectomy are commonly performed for the treatment of laryngeal cancer or hypopharyngeal cancer. However pharyngocutaneous fistula and cervical esophageal stenosis have been reported as postoperative complications of these procedures. We used a silicon pharyngeal tube in cases that developed pharyngocutaneous fistula and cervical esophageal stenosis. The pharyngeal tube was useful for controlling aspiration pneumonia and for starting oral feeding in a case of pharyngocutaneous fistula after a total laryngectomy. It was also helpful for starting oral feeding in
