Health benefits of oral contraceptives.

A sizeable literature corroborates the multiple health benefits of oral contraceptive use. The first estrogen/progestin combination pills were marketed to treat a variety of menstrual disorders. Although currently used oral contraceptives no longer carry FDA-approved labeling for these indications, they remain important therapeutic options for a variety of gynecologic conditions. Well-established gynecologic benefits include a reduction in dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia, iron-deficiency anemia, ectopic pregnancy, and PID. Although older, higher-dose pills reduced the incidence of ovarian cysts,

Oral health of Singapore adults.

In a study conducted by the Dental Division of the Ministry of Health in 1992, 3157 Singapore adults aged 20 to 65 years and over were interviewed on their knowledge, attitude and practice of dental care and given an examination. About 66% indicated they required dental treatment. Utilisation of dental services was low with 39% visiting the dentist at least once in 2 years. About 72% brushed their teeth morning and night. The dental examination showed that 79.2% had calculus, 92% needed prophylaxis and oral hygiene instruction and only 0.2% needed complex periodontal treatment. A large proport

Vitamin C and oral health.

Maintaining natural dentition is a realistic goal given today's improved caries control and attention to good oral hygiene. Expanding knowledge in the area of periodontal diseases provides further insight into health promotion practices which can be effective in preventing tooth loss. Vitamin C's role in maintaining the health of teeth and gingivae remains unchallenged. Now clinical evidence indicates that vitamin C functions in improving host defence mechanisms and is thereby implicated in preserving periodontal health. Common sense tells us that the monitoring of the vitamin C status of indi

Oral health in the elderly: results of the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6).

OBJECTIVES: Oral health plays a central role in overall well-being, including in the elderly. The demographic transition and its effects are resulting in a higher proportion of older people, both with and without care requirements. This paper provides an overview of the dental situation of the elderly from the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6). METHOD AND MATERIALS: DMS • 6 is a population-representative oral epidemiologic study that surveys oral health in Germany. Data from 797 younger seniors aged 65 to 74 were collected by calibrated examiners. The methodology remains largely consiste

Oral Health and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Primary Sjögren's Syndrome.

Background and Objectives: Oral disorders, frequently observed in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome, can profoundly affect patients' daily lives and well-being, as oral health represents a fundamental part of general health. Saliva plays an essential part in maintaining and protecting oral health, so the decrease in its quantity and quality leads to chronic oral discomfort alongside a broad spectrum of problems. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the oral health of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome and establish its effect on the different domains of their oral he

Parents' oral health promotion efforts for their children with Down syndrome and the children's oral health.

AIM: The study evaluated parents' oral health care experiences and practices for their children with Down syndrome and its effect on the child's teeth and gingiva's condition METHOD: 75 parents of children with Down syndrome between 0 and 16 years of age responded to 18-item bilingual questionnaire concerning their child's oral health status RESULT: Most parents rated their child's teeth and gingiva health as good. There is no correlation found between experience score and practice score (r = -0.057), and no correlation between practice score on the child's both teeth (r = -0.001) and gingiva'

Oral health screening for sport.

Oral health is an essential component of general health and wellbeing, but there are many potential challenges to the oral health of athletes, including nutrition and hydration, exercise-induced immune suppression, lack of awareness, negative health behaviours and lack of prioritisation. Oral diseases should be preventable, and there are simple interventions that have good evidence of efficacy. Screening that allows early recognition of disease is well-established in healthcare as the first step in prevention of disease and promotion of positive health behaviours. This paper aims to provide an

Electronic Cigarettes and Oral Health.

Novel nicotine products, particularly electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), have become increasingly popular over the past decade. E-cigarettes are sometimes regarded as a less harmful alternative to tobacco smoking, and there is some evidence of their potential role as a smoking cessation aid. However, there are concerns about their health consequences, particularly in users who are not tobacco smokers, and also when used long term. Given the mode of delivery of these products, there is potential for oral health consequences. Over the past few years, there have been an increasing number of st

Tobacco Use and Oral Health.

This review outlines the important oral implications of tobacco use. The lining of the mouth (oral mucosa), if exposed to tobacco and its products in a susceptible individual, can develop benign, potentially malignant, and malignant tumours. Treatment and prognosis depend on tumour type, how early it is detected, its size and site in the oral cavity and whether it has spread. Advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has a 20% 5-year survival rate. Tobacco use also increases the risk of periodontitis, peri-implantitis, caries, alveolar osteitis and halitosis. Although less life threatening

Oral Health and Erectile Dysfunction.

Ample evidence strongly supports the fact that periodontal disease is a major risk factor for various systemic diseases namely cardio-vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, etc. Recently, investigators focussed on exploring the link between chronic periodontitis (CP) and erectile dysfunction (ED) by contributing to the endothelial dysfunction. Both the diseases share common risk factors. Various studies conducted in different parts of the world in recent years reported the evidence linking this relationship as well as improvement in ED with periodontal treatment. Systemic exposure to the periodo

[Bipolar disorders and oral health].

A bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by recurrent occurrences of manic, depressive or mixed episodes, separated by shorter or longer relatively symptom-free periods. In the Netherlands, the incidence of bipolar disorders is 1.9%. Bipolar disorders are usually treated with a combination of psycho-education, self-management and pharmacotherapy. Both the bipolar disorder and the drugs for treating this disorder have negative effects on oral health. Patients have, among other things, an increased risk of caries, xerostomia, taste abnormalities and bruxism. Extensive instruction in o

Nosocomial pneumonia and oral health.

This article will critically review the evidence linking pneumonia to the aspiration of microbe-laden oropharyngeal secretions and tie that to the predisposition for these processes to affect dependent, medically compromised individuals. The goal of this review is to alert the reader to the role that oral disease and oral health play in fostering and preventing, respectively, widespread and potentially fatal pulmonary disease among high-risk individuals.

Medications' impact on oral health.

BACKGROUND: Over-the-counter and prescription drugs are used frequently, in large quantities and by many adults, particularly by those older than 65 years of age. A number of medications (prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins and minerals, herbal preparations) can affect oral health. With the population's aging, and as more drugs become available, dentists can expect to encounter medication-related oral side effects among their patients. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The author reviewed studies that ranged from case reports to randomly controlled, double-blinded studies. However, in view of t

Oral health and respiratory infection.

The oral cavity has long been considered a potential reservoir for respiratory pathogens. The mechanisms of infection could be aspiration into the lung of oral pathogens capable of causing pneumonia, colonization of dental plaque by respiratory pathogens followed by aspiration, or facilitation by periodontal pathogens of colonization of the upper airway by pulmonary pathogens. Several anaerobic bacteria from the periodontal pocket have been isolated from infected lungs. In elderly patients living in chronic care facilities, the colonization of dental plaque by pulmonary pathogens is frequent.

Periodontal health through public health--the case for oral health promotion.

Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent, particularly amongst socially disadvantaged populations, impact on quality of life and are costly to treat. Clinical treatments and chairside preventive approaches alone will never adequately address this problem. Indeed in many parts of the developing world clinical care and chairside prevention are both unaffordable and inappropriate for the control of periodontal diseases. A paradigm shift away from the individualized treatment approach to a population public health model is needed to promote periodontal health and, in particular to address social

Oral health conditions and unmet need among Chinese male adults: a national oral health survey.

BACKGROUND: Based on the present global burden of oral diseases, unmet dental needs affect a more significant population worldwide. It is characterized by the need for dental care but receiving delayed or no care. Contributing factors include a lack of knowledge about oral health, its consequences, and the availability of dental services. We need to find out the scale of the problem of unmet dental needs of Chinese male adults. Therefore, the aim was to determine the relationship between the presence of oral conditions and the quality of life-related to oral health. METHODS: A total of 46,439
