Oral health and oral health-related quality of life in patients with chronic peripheral facial nerve palsy with synkineses-A case-control-study.

Facial nerve palsy (FP) is the most common cranial nerve lesion, leading to partial or complete immobility of the affected half of face. If food residues on tooth surfaces cannot be removed by natural self-cleaning mechanisms that this is likely to lead to an increase dental plaque formation and the risk of dental, periodontal and general diseases. It was the aim of this study to assess oral health, oral hygiene with the influence of handedness and oral health related quality of life in patients with chronic peripheral FP. This study included 86 people. Patients with FP (n = 43) in an FP-group

Oral hygiene and gingival health in patients with fixed prosthodontic appliances--a 12-month follow-up.

The aim of this study was to assess and observe the oral hygiene and gingival condition in patients before and after fixed prosthodontic therapy through a 12-month period in combination with oral hygiene instructions. It was also analysed how factors, such as type of fixed prosthodontic appliance, constructive material, the position of a fixed partial denture (FPD) in the mouth, age and gender influenced oral hygiene. The dental arches were divided into three segments each and teeth and gingiva were examined using the Plaque and Gingiva Index by Silness and Löe, and for the mineralized deposit

A clinical study comparing the width of attached gingiva and the prevalence of gingival recessions.

One hundred preclinical year dental students were examined. Oral hygiene status and gingival condition were determined using the Plaque Index score (Silness & Löe 1964) and the Gingival Index score systems (Löe & Silness 1963). The width of the attached gingiva and the depth of the gingival pockets were evaluated. The gingival recessions were recorded and their heights measured from the CEJ to the gingival margin. No significant correlation was found between oral hygiene and gingival recession, oral hygiene and width of attached gingival conditions and width of attached gingiva. Only a negativ

Evaluation of oral hygiene and gingival parameters in pediatric nephrotic syndrome within an interdisciplinary care model.

This study aimed to evaluate oral hygiene, gingival condition, and the presence of selected periodontal pathogens in children with nephrotic syndrome (NS) compared to healthy controls. The primary research question was whether interdisciplinary care contributes to better oral health in this medically compromised group.A cross-sectional study was conducted among 86 children aged 5-17 years, including 40 patients with NS and 46 healthy controls. Clinical evaluation included the Plaque Index (Pl.I.), Approximal Plaque Index (API), Gingival Index (GI), Bleeding on Probing (BoP), and presence of de

A descriptive study on oral hygiene practice and caries increment in children with growth stunting.

INTRODUCTION: Stunting is a condition of malnutrition in children from the womb to the early life stage that causes growth failure in the body and brain. Stunting influences the development and integrity of the oral cavity and increases the risk of developing diseases in the oral cavity, such as dental caries. The growth barriers in stunting children and parental knowledge can affect maintaining oral hygiene. This study aims to determine the description of oral hygiene practice and caries increment in children with growth stunting. METHODS: This type of research is a quantitative descriptive

Constructional apraxia screening and oral health among hospitalized older adults: A cross-sectional study.

AIMS: Apraxia may hinder oral self-care and is associated with poor oral hygiene. Intersecting Pentagons Test (IPT) is a simple screening tool for constructional apraxia (CA) that tests the ability to copy a bidimensional figure. In this study we investigated whether IPT is useful to identify subjects that need interventions to support oral health in a cohort of geriatric inpatients. METHODS AND RESULTS: We assessed oral health through the decayed, missing or filled teeth index, plaque index, and periodontal screening and recording tool. We inquired about autonomy in oral hygiene activities t

Factors associated with older adults' need for oral hygiene management by dental professionals.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to assess the need for oral hygiene management by dental professionals among older adults requiring long-term care, and to collect basic data for building a dental treatment framework on a regional level. Although healthcare providers are aware of the importance of oral care for older adults requiring long-term care, reports claim that the provision of oral care is insufficient, and a framework is being built for the provision of oral hygiene management by dental professionals. METHODS: A survey on lifestyle and oral health was carried out on 372 older ad

Evaluating the Oral Hygiene and Periodontal Status of Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis.

Background Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the periodontium, which is induced by various pathogenic microorganisms. The severity and frequency of periodontal disease among patients undergoing hemodialysis are higher compared to healthy individuals. This study aimed to evaluate whether oral prophylaxis and proper oral hygiene maintenance help improve the periodontal condition of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methodology In this study, 30 participants satisfying the inclusion criteria were selected. We assessed the oral hygiene (Oral Hygiene Index Simplified

Increased prevalence of dental caries and poor oral hygiene in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Recent decades have seen a trend to treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) with increasing immunosuppression to improve the long-term outcome. Poor oral hygiene and dental decay cause significant morbidity, and patients with chronic disease (who may be further immunocompromised by treatment) are at greater risk. This study investigated patients with JIA using standard measures of oral health. METHODS: One hundred and forty-nine patients with JIA were included. The children were attending a regional paediatric rheumatology service and the adults were attending an adult rheumatol

Effects of 0.05% Cetylpyridinium Chloride Mouthwash on Halitosis and Tongue Microbiota in Patients Undergoing Orthodontic Treatment: A Double-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Halitosis is frequently observed in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with multibracket appliances, primarily due to volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by oral anaerobic bacteria. Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a widely used antimicrobial agent in oral care products and may help alleviate halitosis. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 0.05% CPC mouthwash on halitosis, oral hygiene indices, and the tongue microbiota in orthodontic patients with elevated VSC levels. Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 30 orthodontic p

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of oral conditions and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children and adolescents with blood coagulation disorders and hemoglobinopathies (BCDH). The study was cross-sectional and included 61 individuals aged 2 to 18 years with BCDH. Association between malocclusion, caries and oral hygiene in children 6 to 12 years old resident in suburban Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: There are conflicting opinions about the contribution of malocclusions to the development of dental caries and periodontal disease. This study's aim was to determine the association between specific malocclusion traits, caries, oral hygiene and periodontal health for children 6 to 12 years old. METHODS: The study was a household survey. The presence of malocclusion traits was assessed in 495 participants. The caries status and severity were assessed with the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft/DMFT) index and the pulpal involvement, ulceration, fistula and abscess (pufa/PUFA)
